Flacco's Right-Hand Men

lol, I agree to most of ppl in here about Reid is a cancer; it's a metastatic cancer in the final stage and it just spreads in a speed of a bullet and displacing anything in sight.  Osemele, Grad, and Oher got hit badly.....

I'm a bit disappointed in the line, but let's give credit where it is due. Expecting KO to handle Star without a problem is like expecting him to handle Ngata.

Thats why they say an oline is only as good as its weakest link. Reid screwed up our whole chemistry. i'm not worried about the rest of the line.

How worried are you all about Oher, and to a lesser extent Osemele, in their ability to protect against the pass rush?  Oher got completely manhandled at times and Osemele was less than ideal.  I remember vividly on the 2nd drive Oher's man zip past him to sack Flacco like it was nothing, for instance.

The way Osemele was handled by Lotulelei was surprising, and concerning.  I was was afraid the kid was getting a big head from some of the things he has said in interviews...kinda gave the impressoin he thought he was tops and could have his way.  So, maybe he starts tking it a little more serious since Star handed him his a$$.

Also, wasn't Juan Castillo supposed to improve our O-line?  It lookis like they have regressed since he has been here.

I wonder if Star played better when Yanda went out because Gradkowski had slide over protection and help Reid, leaving KO to have no inside help.

That's the thing: when Reid struggled (basically all night), everyone else struggled with him because he can't do his job right.

You guys are killing Reid but he's not a guard. He's our backup tackle. You just don't see him there because Oher's always healthy.

Reid shouldn't be on the team, regardless. If Oher DOES go down, then you're jumping out of the fire and into the fire.

He might be worse at RT than he is at RG, in all honesty.
Carolinas' strength is their defense but Osemele was manhandled all night by a rookie. Oher is very inconsistant and Jah Reid has stunk since day one. Joe and the receiving corp. just need more time to gel. No worries, they'll be ready by opening day.
Jah Reid will end up like Oneil "the Matador " Cousins . Cut this loser before he gets Joe hurt !!!!

Since we're on the topic of the oline, does anyone know if Jack Cornell has been playing guard or tackle? He's listed as both. I just remember some people on here had liked what they saw from him last year. His name was brought up a lot in a good way, anyway. The point is, has anyone noticed any other interior linemen (or olinemen in general) playing well besides the starters (I realize they had a rough night last night, but I'm not really worried when Yanda is in there)?

Can't say Jack has stood out to mean, but I actually haven't broken down the games this preseason like I have in years past. From what I can remember, I think Jack has been playing right tackle with the 3rd team oline. I don't think he'll stick around honestly.

As for the oline's performance the other night. I wouldn't worry too much. The Panthers did a lot of slanting and running games on the line and that's just something that is so tough to game plan for in the preseason. Did they struggle? Yes, did KO have a off night? Yes but i don't think there is cause for concern.

I'm not 100% sure of this because I only watched the game live and don't have it recorded to go back and re-watch it, but I think the offense moved to more of a zone blocking scheme in the second half to help protect against what the Panthers were doing up front and the offense moved the ball without issues if I remember correctly. I think the Ravens came out and scored 10 points in the first 2 possessions of the 2nd half. I know the first drive of the 2nd half the Panthers full defense was in, but I think they took some guys out on the 2nd Drive(TD drive).

KO, Reid and Oher each have A LOT of work to do if we want to have a successful offense. 2 of the turnovers I credit to our O-line getting completely man handled and dominated.
The panthers spent WAY too much time in our backfield for my liking.

I'm not concerned with the oline, not the starters anyway. It was more of a question about the backups, besides Reid because everyone has been talking about him already. I just brought up Cornell's name because some people liked what they had seen from him last year, but no one seemed to be talking about him this year.

Oher wasn't doing too bad when he got hurt.  I hope he'll be OK, as I don't trust anyone to back him up for entire games.  Most of the pressure seemed to be coming from the other side, actually.  Correct me if I misremembered.

Oher was fine in pass protection. He was just terrible in the run game. He was getting beat like a drum.

Just to translate, when Flacco says in the press conference that we didn't make plays down the field, he means his receivers dropped at least a third of the balls thrown their way.  Flacco was 34/62, or something like that, but if even some of those catches were made he's sitting above 60% completions which is where you want to be.  I guarantee when PFF releases the grades tomorrow he'll have a good accuracy percentage.

We're not supposed to  :P .

Joe amazes me though.  I'm mean, if I was called to the stand after that game like that I'd be calling guys out and defending what I did.

He still had 362 yd and 2 TD despite all the hits and drops.

It bothers me more because I have ESPN as background noise for half my day sometimes, and I'm tired of listening to idiots who don't watch the games and don't watch the tape talk about things they don't know and make no effort to understand.  Of course we deal with people on the boards like that too, but still it's frustrating.

I've mostly heard people lambast the D today, which is reasonable.

I was scratching my head when we drafted Reid, a lot like Adam Terry. DeCosta and the guys said he had excellent knee bend and leverage and all this stuff. From his first snaps, he just looked like he had no business being a professional athlete, and things haven't improved an iota. He's like Tandon Doss, the possession receiver who can't run routes, get open, or catch the ball. He's like a speedster deep threat who runs a 5.6 40.

We all got ahead of ourselves with Osemele. He's good, but he got schooled by a rookie who hasn't played a regular season game yet. He's still a really good player, but it's probably good to ratchet the expectations to a more realistic level for the time being.

McKinnie was his average self. Generally very good, especially in pass protection, and he's a good run blocker when he doesn't have to run to get to his guy. When he does, he's atrocious.

Gino wasn't great but he was generally not too shabby.

One of Oher's first preseason plays, he pancaked Renaldo Wynn way after the play was over, and we thought we had the next "Boomer" Bob Brown. He's been a complete bum since, and I hate saying that about a Raven. The usual defenses of "he had a great rookie year," "He's an average LT but a great RT" etc. don't hold up. He plays extremely halfheartedly, no mean streak. Robert Mathis obliterated him in Indy, Von Miller wasn't even slowed a tenth of a second on many plays, Ray McDonald and Ahmad Brooks lit him up in the Super Bowl. Momentum was just on our side and Joe was getting the ball out fast, so Oher didn't give up sacks and limited the penalties. His getting smoked, thankfully, didn't hurt us so few people noticed. I had no idea how poorly he played until I watched all the games and rewinded each play 5x to check out the linemen. #74 was just painful, I have no idea how the coaching staff watches the same film and has any faith in him. He doesn't anchor well pass blocking, his kickout is amazing but footwork turns to junk when the defender gets there, he doesn't play to the whistle run or pass blocking, and he can't target and hit a guy on screens or in space.

I'd start Rick Wagner right now. I'd also keep Rogers Gaines, JJ Unga, Jordan Devey, Jack Cornell or any of the others over Jah Reid. We cut bait with Adam Terry when we realized he was a useless oaf and we made a mistake. Time to do so with Jah Reid right now and Oher after his rookie contract expires.

Outside the O-line, the Kuechly tackle/forced fumble on Pierce appears to be on Leach to the naked eye, for not getting outside fast enough. Like many runs this preseason, especially outside runs, it was just ugly from the start along the whole line though. Pierce of course also has a role no matter how badly the play was blown up.

The whole first team line looks weird this preseason. They're all pulling off this way and that way running toward Timbuktu, blocking nobody, while 4 defenders surge into the backfield to stop the RB for a 3 yard loss. The second team line just seems to play basic football; push the guy across from you, nothing fancy. There's a reason Berry, Allen, Rainey, and Tyrod have been more effective, and a large part is just the 2nd team o-line playing basic, decent football instead of the bizarre abomination the 1st team line has been so far.

Were we watching the same game? Because Graddkowski and Wagner were friggin horrible last night
