Flacco's Right-Hand Men

How worried are you all about Oher, and to a lesser extent Osemele, in their ability to protect against the pass rush?  Oher got completely manhandled at times and Osemele was less than ideal.  I remember vividly on the 2nd drive Oher's man zip past him to sack Flacco like it was nothing, for instance.

Jah Reid was like a cancer to the entire O-line when they brought him in for Yanda

Poe, refer to this

Jah Reid is that guy who doesn't cover his mouth when he sneezes. Before you know it everyone is infected.

Lmao

Osemele is not going to just lose it in 1 game. Star had a great game for them. it happens. Yanda was the man though. Glad he is back.

While on the subject of the O-line, the Ravens made Lotulelei look like a Star tonight, in spite of his previour preseason struggles.  He was eating up running plays like he was back in Utah.

Carolinas' strength is their defense but Osemele was manhandled all night by a rookie.  Oher is very inconsistant and Jah Reid has stunk since day one.

Joe and the receiving corp. just need more time to gel.  No worries, they'll be ready by opening day.

My thoughts exactly!  I'm willing to shrug off Osemele's performance, as I think it will be a 1-time thing.

Well, they are both Mormon Pacific Islanders.

Anyway, it's unacceptable to allow Flacco and the backs to get manhandled by a rookie.  The holes the O-linemen allowed allowed Star and Kuechly to have monster games.

Uh. Luke is a monster, and one of the best (if not the best) MLBs in the NFL.

Star is a beast, and would've been a top 5 pick is not for injury.

Literally, he was one of the guys I thought would be a contributed immediately

Yanda.

He's the best olineman, and when Jah Reid is in, it is like it infects Gradkowski and Oher too, and when Gradkowski is infected, Osemele's play deteriorates as well.

I'm done with Jah. Cut.

Doesn't explain the gaping holes that facilitated their plays.  And Star has struggled against the 2 supposedly inferior O-lines that he's faced this preseason.

Again, KO prob had an off night.
But Star needed a push too.

He had a bad night. It happens.

And Luke K looks like he'll be a dominant lb for the next 10 years. Not complaining

I'm worried about the line when Yanda isn't in.  Kind of like a couple years ago when Grubbs missed time with turf toe, our line struggled big time when he was out then got it together when he was in.

I have more confidence in KO than I do in Gino right now, but Gino is still just getting used to starting.  KO I'm not worried about.  And although Oher had some negative plays tonight, I thought he kept Charles Johnson really quiet.

Ramon Harewood jumping in the pile late was stupid, too. That's cheap stuff you see from scrubs like Chris Kemoatu, I don't like seeing it here.

Interior line was poor tonight

Oher had another stupid and costly penalty, too.

I was scratching my head when we drafted Reid, a lot like Adam Terry.  DeCosta and the guys said he had excellent knee bend and leverage and all this stuff.  From his first snaps, he just looked like he had no business being a professional athlete, and things haven't improved an iota.  He's like Tandon Doss, the possession receiver who can't run routes, get open, or catch the ball.  He's like a speedster deep threat who runs a 5.6 40.

We all got ahead of ourselves with Osemele.  He's good, but he got schooled by a rookie who hasn't played a regular season game yet.  He's still a really good player, but it's probably good to ratchet the expectations to a more realistic level for the time being.

McKinnie was his average self.  Generally very good, especially in pass protection, and he's a good run blocker when he doesn't have to run to get to his guy.  When he does, he's atrocious.

Gino wasn't great but he was generally not too shabby.

One of Oher's first preseason plays, he pancaked Renaldo Wynn way after the play was over, and we thought we had the next "Boomer" Bob Brown.  He's been a complete bum since, and I hate saying that about a Raven.  The usual defenses of "he had a great rookie year," "He's an average LT but a great RT" etc. don't hold up.  He plays extremely halfheartedly, no mean streak.  Robert Mathis obliterated him in Indy, Von Miller wasn't even slowed a tenth of a second on many plays, Ray McDonald and Ahmad Brooks lit him up in the Super Bowl.  Momentum was just on our side and Joe was getting the ball out fast, so Oher didn't give up sacks and limited the penalties.  His getting smoked, thankfully, didn't hurt us so few people noticed.  I had no idea how poorly he played until I watched all the games and rewinded each play 5x to check out the linemen.  #74 was just painful, I have no idea how the coaching staff watches the same film and has any faith in him.  He doesn't anchor well pass blocking, his kickout is amazing but footwork turns to junk when the defender gets there, he doesn't play to the whistle run or pass blocking, and he can't target and hit a guy on screens or in space.

I'd start Rick Wagner right now.  I'd also keep Rogers Gaines, JJ Unga, Jordan Devey, Jack Cornell or any of the others over Jah Reid.  We cut bait with Adam Terry when we realized he was a useless oaf and we made a mistake.  Time to do so with Jah Reid right now and Oher after his rookie contract expires.

Outside the O-line, the Kuechly tackle/forced fumble on Pierce appears to be on Leach to the naked eye, for not getting outside fast enough.  Like many runs this preseason, especially outside runs, it was just ugly from the start along the whole line though.  Pierce of course also has a role no matter how badly the play was blown up.

The whole first team line looks weird this preseason.  They're all pulling off this way and that way running toward Timbuktu, blocking nobody, while 4 defenders surge into the backfield to stop the RB for a 3 yard loss.  The second team line just seems to play basic football; push the guy across from you, nothing fancy.  There's a reason Berry, Allen, Rainey, and Tyrod have been more effective, and a large part is just the 2nd team o-line playing basic, decent football instead of the bizarre abomination the 1st team line has been so far.

Gotta give that Carolina front 7 some credit. When they are healthy they are pretty damn good, especially with the addition of Star. There was also a noticeable difference when Reid stepped in at guard. I think the o line will be fine and have more confidence in the offense than before. Oher will be Oher, BUT something I feel I should mention is he usually comes through in big games for all the bad mouthing he gets.

I'm most concerned about Reid - he is not a starter and should not be.  The starting line hasn't played together yet, and lines are all about chemistry - if just one guy is missing it can throw the whole thing off.

I thought we had our starting line out there on the first drive or two?

On a scale of 1 being super worried and 10 being I don't give two craps, Im at like an 11.

It's pre-season, they earned their jobs already. They will show up when it matters.

Why is it that everyone scrutinizes every player on this team but if anyone says Flacco threw 2 picks he gets defended immediately or if he looked terrible at saturday's practice; people will say it's just practice? We need to do that for all of our starters who have proven their worth not just the QB

It's pre season! Not saying Flacco is bad for throwing the 2 picks last night but 4 picks in 3 games and a lack of offense and you want to call out one of the best up and coming guards and a top 5 right tackle? Not worried at all.

We will be fine.

I saw Jah's head spinning which on a couple plays made Gino be extra aware of what was going on to his right and missing his assignment on the left. Bc he had to over compensate for the weak play on the right side of the line it looked to me like KO was getting hung out to dry on a couple of the pressures.

But with how well we've seen him play we come to expect a certain level from him where he should still be able to win some of those matchups... unfortunately tonight he didn't. It was the first game with the entire line back together, lets give them some time to mesh. And we need to give GIno some time to get better at reading defensive fronts.

I will say though in Gino's defense, he made a few great blocks in the run game... I really like his potential especially in run blocking.

Oher still looks lost when he cant get his hands on his man immediately.

McKinnie is dominant when he doesn't have to move... if he has to get up field or find a guy in space forget about it.

Jah should be cut. I haven't seen anything positive from him in the 3 years hes been here.
