Well, that's what I'm saying. It would need to be properly applied. He's listed at 205 right now and if he wants to be able to battle for the ball with those bigger DB's, he'll need some more weight, but you're right, it could turn out badly, like Rices did. Just saying, Calvin and Dez are both about 230 and 225 respectively, so it could help, could not.

Calvin also ran a 4.3 forty

Yes, and Marlon ran a 4.4, it's whatever, the route running in the end is what makes them successful. It was just a thought.

I am not sold on the muscle thing. look what happened to ray rice....

He doesn´t need a 230 body. he is just fine right now. every additional pound will make him slower...

Not necessarily.  That all comes down to nutrition and weight training/flexibility.

None of our receivers are great route runners, therefore they are bound to have bad games because they are not dominant players. Ascending to very good players, but just not dominant.

Yea I agree, our guys aren't even comfortable enough in what they are supposed to do on any given play, so they have a long ways to go before they can become dominant. Brown has great talent imo but the fact that he's an UDFA still shows up plenty of times in games.

marlon brown has not done much since that cleveland game. He gets a lot of snaps but I am seeing no production. Is Joe not targeting him or is he having trouble getting open? I just know with the return of pitta, we need a strong passing game to lift us into the playoffs and perhaps the superbowl. The 3rd receiver spot is important and if brown is not cutting it, why not give Deonte a chance?

While he has a long way to go, he did score five touchdowns in the first seven games of his career. On a team full of young receivers with plenty of potential but who haven't proven much, that's about as "proven" as you can get on this team.

You also have to remember you are talking about a rookie who is still really learning the game, offense and dealing with working through injuries. His production has fallen off, but I don't think he should be benched. He still does his job as the #2 WR outside of putting up big numbers if that makes sense. He still blocks well, holds coverage when asked and even though he struggles at time(rookie) with his route concepts he has been open a lot but no attempts his way. Earlier this week I said he was slowing down and by numbers he is, but I don't think it's the rookie wall any more. I think it has more to do with Jacoby and Flacco finally getting back into that rhythm with each other.

If you go back and look at this 34 yard completion to Jacoby, Marlon was open too. However Flacco choose to go with Jacoby, but Marlon made a really smart play to cut off his route and reverse field to make himself available to Joe. Of course you know if given the choice Flacco is going for the big chunk of yards.

You can look at this play as an example of his blocking, but also notice how he's actually open but Rice is more open. Flacco makes the right decision but that's no fault of Browns.

There are obviously more cases for Brown, like Flacco's 1st int vs the Bengals where Rice misses a block. Brown ran a corner route from inside the formation and came wide open. Joe was actually trying to get him the ball but his arm got hit. That would have been a big play for Brown.

So i'm still very much encouraged by what I see from Brown and if we can get Pitta back, I love the weapons of Torrey, Coby, Brown, Pitta/Clark and Stokley/Doss. I just think Flacco is finally getting a comfortable level with all his guys and that has pushed Brown and Doss back a bit so their opportunities are limited. But Brown is still doing a solid job. We gotta get him in the redzone offense though.

Marlon to me is having a fantastic rookie season considering his place on the depth chart at the start of camp and the fact that he was injured.  At this point I'd say the jury is still out over whether he could be a potential starting NFL receiver, but in my mind he's already easily a career #3/4 guy, and I think that's outstanding for a relatively unknown UDFA.

I'd say look to Alshon Jeffery. I really wanted the Ravens to draft that guy and now he's showing why, but his rookie year was tough and he had to adjust. Obviously he and Marlon aren't the same type of players but i think their situations could be similar.

As I said I was a huge fan of Alshon's so I still follow him. Last year he had to deal with injuries as well as just adjusting to the NFL game. Plus he had to deal with Cutler just being more familiar with Marshall. So even times when he was open, Jay might force the ball into Marshall. Even with this, he still showed flashes of what he could be. Now this year he's playing with much more confidence and knows that he could become one of the better WRs in this league. He looks like the Alshon from SC again.

I look at Marlon the same way. Imo he's already shown the signs that he could be a solid #2 for this team with his play earlier in the season when the team had to rely on him to do so. He plays strong, physically and with a lot of explosion. Those are things you can't teach. As physically gifted as a guy like Randy Hymes was you just couldn't teach him how to play physical enough. Same with Marcus Smith, tough guy as shown by his ST play, but didn't play to his size potential as a WR if that makes sense. Marlon Brown isn't like that, this guy plays physical and a year or 2 in the weight room will only make him better in that area. Right now Joe is getting his timing and chemistry back with Jacoby, and continuing to build it with Torrey, so it's tough to consistently work Marlon in as well. But the one thing I will say is that teams will start to back up to prevent our deep ball with Coby and Torrey, that's when Marlon can really show he's ready to step up and be big time because we are gonna need someone to make teams pay underneath and over the middle.

I think a true offseason of working with Joe and working out like a pro, he'll be really good next year.

Rice looked like he's added weight each year he's come back since 11.  I'm not saying over do it, I'm saying get to a point and maintain.  The added muscle should help against injuries, while also helping him beat press and should help in fighting for the ball.  Also, I don't think the team needs Marlon to be a burner anyway.  If he weight is added properly, there shouldn't be much of a drop off in speed anyway.

What is up with Marlon lately?  PFF stats show his been consistently getting a large volume of snaps yet his production is declining.   His had the highest INT ratio thrown to him out of all the receivers.

Marlon doesn't seem like his fighting for his job like he has done @ preseason.

He had an exciting start to his career, but I'm guessing the tape has finally caught up with him.  He's scored what, 5 TDs?  For an UDFA that's still pretty dang good.

... Please explain sir. We scored only one touchdown vs. Pittsburgh, we are in the bottom half of the league as a scoring offense, our red zone offense is horrible and the best offensive player on this team is Justin Tucker.

yeah, that's my wonder about redzone target too; they should put Marlon in slot attacking in the middle of the redzone, where only he can get to the jump ball.  I believe we are less efficient inside 20yd line cuz we didn't use TE and tall WR in middle of the field.

Last year, attacking middle of the field is Flacco/Boldin's bread and butter.  I believe Marlon can fill in that role......

I don't remember seeing Marlon Brown running a 4.4 and I don't think he even participated  in running the 40 at the combine or pro day since he was still trying to recover from his acl tear.

He's very raw, and it's showing against the tougher defenses we have played lately.

Ton of potential, just needs time

It was a 40 time off a scouting report that was .03 off, he actually ran a 4.5 in a measurement before pro day/combine. Still pretty fast.

Lol... that was kinda the point I was making. We don't have anyone good this year who can dominate and take over.

We have been able to move the ball. You're not seeing 3 and outs. The problem is red zone efficiency. With Joe being able to rely more on the receivers, we will see more passes, ultimately moving the ball. I think this will hopefully begin to change with Pitta's return, as well.

Marlon Brown = Beast. What a way to show up today, especially on the last drive. A crucial catch on the first play of the drive to give them some momentum, and then a clutch catch at the back of the endzone. Plays a rookie should not be making, especially an undrafted one.

He is a playmaker...that is all you need him for right now. He has 6TDs and has a lot of potential and a ton of room for development. If we can add pieces around Torrey Brown and Pitta we will have a lot more success passing the ball.
