Remind me again why you think Thompson has done more than Williams. I mean, Thompson played in one game and didn't really look spectacular

I guess it depends on what the team feels they need. Williams gives you more on special teams but Thompson was supposedly making a strong push to start before he got hurt.

Doss looked really disappointing. Outside of the one catch where he fought hard for some extra yards, I felt like he played a really poor game. It's really disappointing that he hasn't put it together, but the way Brown looked and the way Mellette looked I just don't know if he has room now. In fact, Marlon Brown looked good overall. People talk a lot about LaQuan Williams, but Marlon Brown looked good run blocking as well in addition to helping other WRs pick up more yards by blocking for them. Mellette looked good on ST, making some nice and decent coverage stops.

Agreed. I've been all for giving Doss time, but it may have run out tonight. When he does nothing and the guys behind him perform, it's hard to justify keeping him around.

Regarding LaQuan, I watched him a lot tonight. Nothing of note at WR, but he was on ST from the first snap to that last one. At this point, I'd say its between him, Doss, and Thompson.

Doss is as good as done. I thought Mellette/Stokley already took care of him. Now I think Brown may have done away with Williams. I can't see us keeping more than 6 WRs

Smith

Jones

Thompson

Stokley

Mellette

Brown

Thompson is safe.. but not that safe.

His sloppy play hurt him in the eyes of a lot of people. Looked lazy. I don't care one way or another if he is cut at this point.

He didn't look lazy at all. He went outside, then cut back inside. Joe told him he has to keep going one way, if he's going to go outside, stay outside (finger point). But Doss twisted back in. It was a QB-WR miscommunication.

I'm going to be laughing (neg me all you will), when Doss makes the 53. I think Brown and Mellette will make it too, but remember these two are guys who can be stashed on a PS and not picked up. Brown looked good though. Who did he make his catches against? If someone can compile the names of the CBs, that'd be good.

To be honest I'm mostly excited about Stokley. The way Stoke and JJ played tonight, neither Doss or Marlon or Mellette will see the field unless BOTH of those guys go down, or one of them does.

I hope Brown starts as the #4 receiver though. He's got big play potential, and a big body.

Tonight I saw a receiver who got open multiple times and could sit in a zone.   And I saw a receiver who hit the seam and caught a bullet near two defenders and headed straight for the endzone.

Against the other team's starting defense.

I don't know how you don't give him some more time with the starting offense to see if he can make it consistent.   To me Brown outplayed every other receiver on the field including our top two guys.

I think he played his way onto the team tonight.   I still believe getting rid of Boldin was a mistake.   But if Brown can continue to play like this, we may not need a guy to contest catches like that.

He caught the ball that came his way

I disagree. He looked lazy for the most part to me. Just my opinion though. You are entitled to disagree.

I agree, and don't forget about Stokely.  Getting open over the middle and picking up a big first down on another play.

Someone has to have a good profile on him. I'm getting crap just searching online. I would like to know more about his press release skills, his agility, his route tree in college, and his injury history.

I do. My eyes were on him 100% of the time he was on the field. He was running hard, blocking hard, finishing off his routes and plays.

Doss isn't going to get cut. In 2011, I was the only person on the Torrey Smith bandwagon. Before we drafted him (where I also said we should draft Muhammad Wilkerson instead of Jimmy Smith), and after we drafted him during TC, and during preseason. Torrey got so much criticism from this entire board due to TC reports and the few snaps and targets from preseason.

Tell you what, there'll be some injuries this regular season, guys will have to step up, and we'll see who the real "other" good Ravens young receiver is.

I'm not a believer in JJ being the number 2. Im ok with Stokely but really feel that Brown earned himself a real shot at the number two spot. JJ is a over hyped WR and a great STs player.

Also people are sleeping on the impact that Mellette made on the field today. He pull the top off the defense and caused mismatchs with the teams number 1 defense on the field. They got penalized because they had no answer for his speed and strength. Brown impressed more but don't confuse the fact the Mellette proved with time he could become a starter as well.

Torrey stepped up his rookie year. Doss is now a 3rd year receiver. The situation isn't really comparable, honestly.

Both Mellette and Brown are very promising.

Laquan, Mellette, Brown, it's someone new every week. That's why the coaches are having such a hard time picking a winner. Everyone's had ups and downs (yes even Doss).

And that's probably why he won't get a lot of playing time outside of ST's.    But then again maybe they will rotate him in with Stokley.   I don't see Stokley playing over 50% of gametime.   He is still 37 years old.

Stoke looked good enough to be our #2 imo. Really I know the majority of our snaps with caldwell are in 3 WR sets, so I'm okay with Jacoby/Stoke/Torrey. I think the reasoning is that if we go 2 WR, the other eligible receivers (2 RBs and 1 TE, or 2 TEs and 1 RB) can work the underneath stuff, so Jacoby is best.

Torrey had an opportunity to step up in the regular season his rookie year. Doss didn't get a start his rookie year, or second, or third. He's still waiting for that injury so he can go into a game as a starter a la Torrey Smith before the Rams game in 11'.

He played over 50% of the Broncos' snaps last season.  If he stays healthy and plays like he did tonight, I hope he is on the field a ton.

Doss has been given opportunities in preseason and the playoffs, and has dome little. How long do we have to wait? How is it that a rookie 7th rounder and a rookie UDFA is outplaying him?

I keep forgetting that Brown is 6' 5" too. It seems like we've been searching for that late round tall WR for the redzone forever. We can go all the way back to guys like Clarence Moore and most recently Tommy Streeter. What Brown did today was show he can play against starting caliber corners. He's already a lot more than just a redzone guy.

I'm going to laugh too because I think he still makes it despite being what he is. On another note I found a little something. http://ohiostate.scout.com/a.z?s=145&p=8&c=1&nid=3145458

Are you serious? Torrey Smith got the start. A START. Not limited snaps here and there in preseason or in any other game. He was told, "you're the man. You're starting opposite Anquan this Sunday." Not because of the limited opportunities that you saw Doss get in preseason and the playoffs, no, after those limited opportunities Torrey Smith didn't look like he deserved to start. 99% of this board thought he looked like a bust and wanted him out of here, and were declaring Ozzie as an idiot savant who was all savant except when it came to WRs where he was an idiot, apparently. So after all those "given opportunities" same as Doss, everyone came away looking at Torrey (this included 2 regular season games with him as the no. 3 receiver, and half a game where he was the no. 2 receiver after Evsns got injured) EXACTLY how you're looking at Doss.

But then what happened? Torrey didn't EARN a start because of his play in limited opportunities. Lee Evans got injured, and had to sit out. He wasn't cleared to play. So then the coaches told Torrey, you're going to be the starting receiver.

When that happens for Doss, then talk.

Oh also, it's so ironic, because back in the 2011 preseason

people were talking about Torrey Smith the same way "How is it that a 4th round draft pick (Doss) and a UDFA (LaQuan) are outplaying him?

Yet,  Torrey still hung on to the no. 3 position on the depth chart. Because he made plays where you guys weren't watching.....in practice. Same reason why Doss will still be on this team come week 1.

Torrey had a problem with drops not with getting open and disappearing for strecths of the game. Teams had to account for his speed unlike Doss who is simple a possession reciever. I'm not saying your wrong in your logic of giving him chances but man you got to see lighting in a bottle when it happens too. The coachs have been high on Brown all trainning camp and this showing tonight is probably what they have seen and if it is I would rather sink or swim with him then Doss who at this point in his career should know the playbook.

And after Doss's practices, he had less playing time than Mellette and Brown, and did less with it. The coaches rotated the WRs because they clearly weren't impressed with him or the other receivers at the top of the depth chart.

He has done nothing to impress, and isn't a high enough draft pick (or a rookie, so comparisons to 2011 Torrey are meaningless) for the team to bite the bullet. He's not even a huge asset on STs.

He's as good as gone, I'd bet everything on that.

Thank you.

Games are important but the majority of what the coaches see is in practice. To my knowledge Doss was targeted twice for 1 catch and 1 miscommunication. If anyone was wondering, Flacco had a miscommunication for a pick-6 on his first preseason pass against Washington back in 2011 and the guy who ran the wrong route was Anquan Boldin.

Doss can still make the team. He just looked bad but he fought really hard on that one play where he caught the ball and he looked decent enough on other plays. He and Joe had a really bad miscommunication. With that said, it's too tight to call. It could go any way honestly.
