So last season we were too old to be good and now we are not old enough? What?

Welcome to the logic of mainstream media

Bayless is a character, not an analyst. Says inflammatory things to get clicks and views, not because he believes them. Maybe he just says them because he's lazy? That's becoming the way of sports journalism.

A Pundit.

Thanks for learning me on Quarterback Rating. I really appreciate it

I guess the placement of my words caused some confusion. QBR is what I was suggesting no one knows how to calculate (meaning the people quoting it merely quote what the game statisticians put in the box score INSTEAD of calculating it themselves) and that's what I'm saying is arbitrary.

As far as the traditional one, I know somebody knows how to calculate it, but I know that most folk probably wouldn't be able to calculate it while watching the game. You mentioned incompletions - clearly sounds like my receivers who drop my perfectly thrown balls count against my score. You didn't mention sacks, but you mentioned a formula. Sounds complex. Stats ought to be easily and readily calculated AND easily articulated. I worked in a sales analytics role with sales people and the rule for compensation/commission is - it has to be easy to calculate.

I think better arguments can be made by using more detailed stats that might not be so simple. That being said you can break down areas of the QB's game and use that to help back your opinion of a player. Things like accuracy percentage(with stuff like drops batted passes and throw aways accounted for) could be used to make cases against Flacco. You can calculate those much easier and anyone can do it. That being said if you want a stat to sum up a QB's entire performance, something easy to calculate, probably won't get it done.

Personal question...

But what do you do for a living?  Are you an accountant?  Or a programmer?  I just want to know because you drop KNOWLEDGE

I think hes an analyst of some kind. Or works for a massive company in finance dpt

I pay him to put my thoughts in post form and share them with you all

Haha that's funny, codizzle.

But I am a Systems Analyst by title, though my personal productivity involves a whole lot of actual programming on top of the analysis, which is somewhat atypical of the position traditionally.

To be fair... Callahan and Batman have never been seen in the same place at the same time. I'm just sayin'.

Are you sure he's the hero?  He seems like he might be the villain to me, and I have the proof here:

Seriously though, we've been saying Total QBR is crap since ESPN introduced it.  It's something they invented to make the running QBs that network loves so much look better.

Truly the QBR stat was made to try and do what John Hollinger's PER stat did for basketball, give a catch-all stat for the most analyzed position in sports.

Well since he's not on, one quick question if you don't mind answering even though you've paid:
It almost seems as if they dock you points immediately if your team loses. I'm looking at game splits and it might be the case

When answering directly I only supply photo responses

So my answer is simply....

I love Jaws he actually does his homework and is always very precise with his analysis. I hate when Stephen A Smith tries to defend the Ravens because he never has a clue what hes talking about. He just says RAY LEWIS BLAH BLAH LEWIS.

I respect what Jaws said and as a Ravens fan, I would like to believe that but I don't. Look great on paper but paper as we know it doesn't always transfer to game time. I guess I can say we are the best team in the AFC until proven otherwise with us being the former SB champions. It's possible for us to be the best team in the AFC but I wouldn't be quick to put my life savings on it.

How do you come to this conclusion?

Who's better than us? Cant say anybody, since we are the SB Champs. Saying anyone is better than us would mean that you are judging how they look on paper, and as you said, that means nothing

hey guys usually I read all the post in a thread and offer my opinion on either the original post or someone's opinion. But just watching that video, I had to post without going through the entire thread. So forgive me if my post is redundant with others.

I know most will call Jaws a Flacco lover or supporter or whatever the cool foolish term is now, but it was great to see his passion on full display. Not just in defending Flacco but defending his views and opinion and calling out so called experts who always want to use stats to their advantage to make points. You watch stats and I watch film. I loved that.

Guys like Skip and the other bandwagoner just talk to talk. Skip said we can't continue to lose young talent on defense and be successful and of course Jaws shuts him down. This defense is younger, faster and arguably better at ever position last season. It's funny how everyone wants to talk about how Ray Lewis and Ed Reed means so much more to this defense then just on field talent, whenever someone brings up how those guys were a shell of their former selves. However over the past 2 seasons, those same people were talking about how the Ravens defense was falling off because they were old and slow. Mainly Ray and Ed. Comments like this just make me laugh because I know those that are talking know little to nothing about the Ravens.

I think Harbs said it best to start camp, Those who don't know feel the need to talk, because they don't know. But those that know, don't need to say much.

Jaws usually doesn't say much. He just gives his opinion of what he sees watching film. Real Film. He doesn't go all over ESPN talking about how he was right, or acting as if he's the end all be all of QB evaluation. He just calls things how it sees it. I couldn't stop smiling when Skip slid in the comment about how Flacco is to Jaws as Tebow is to Skip. Uh no. Jaws doesn't blindly defend Flacco at all cost.

Had to break the post up because I didn't wanna leave a book to read lol.

I loved how Jaws asked, why does Skip always have to be negative. Jaws made both those guys look like uneducated fools who are just recycling prior opinions of what the Ravens will be this year. The Ravens aren't even the best in their division look at the Bengals. Can the Bengals at least win a playoff game? Well we can say that about every team who hasn't proven it yet. lol You gotta love it. If they haven't proven anything yet, who are you so convinced they are the best team in the AFC North. Yes they are talented but they still haven't proven to be able to be the Ravens and Steelers consistently when both teams are healhty. Andy Dalton struggled against our backup defense last season and I'm supposed to be impressed because they won that game? Yes they have improved with young talent but so have the Ravens and that's scary. You couldn't beat the Ravens when we were old and slow on defense and one dimensional and un-creative on offense. Now the team has upgraded and we're supposed to believe that the Bengals are head and shoulders better?

When did commonsense become so uncommon? I honest think Jaws should have a show with himself and others who truly watch and break down film to inform fans of what truly is going on. That NFL Matchup show is great, but it should be a daily show, not just a gameday show. I think both die hard fans like myself, and the casual fan looking to learn more about the Xs and Os the game deserve more then what the likes of Skip has to offer. JMO.

Oh one more thing. How many times is the pressure gonna be too much for Flacco? This guy wasn't even supposed to start as a rookie but helped this team to the AFCCG. From that moment on, it's been Super Bowl or bust for Flacco and many fans in Ravens Nation made that clear to Flacco. Nobody can put more pressure on Flacco then we have and he's placed on himself over the last 3 years. Many of use thought that 2010 was our year, then 2012 proved to be. The exact opposite to what all these fools say is true. The pressure is now off of Joe. He can go out and be Joe and now have to worry about anything. He knows he's the man in Baltimore

Just got around to watching the video, and wow. Talk about a perfect display of intelligence vs bias.

On one hand you have Jaws who clearly explains why the defensive losses were overrated and the defensive gains are underrated. He also explains why the Ravens offense will continue to succeed because the strengths of Flacco are still available.

On the other hand, you have two guys whose explanations are "too much contract pressure" and "lack of Ray Lewis playoff magic".

That's not even me trying to skew the argument. That's exactly how it went down.

Well, considering we lost a lot of people and certain teams didn't, it's more fair to say we look great on paper until proven otherwise ( defense that is, will pray for the offense ). Only reason I say on paper for us b/c we lost so many pieces and we got so many new pieces so we need to see how the chemistry works out first

I wonder how Jaws can attempt to have a serious football conversation with anyone at ESPN. His knowledge surpasses the entire network. He hasn't allowed himself to be caught up with Fantasy Football. I love it! Way to roast that clown, Bayless. I know its his job to troll, but just seeing him brings the already little credibility of ESPN down even more.

lol, Get 'em Jaws!

I've been watching a lot of "Lie To Me"... a lot of it to be honest.

6:04, that is some serious contempt Danny has for Jaws. *LOL*

And Skip always has a face of "disgust" regardless of who is on set.

Is it just me or is it a complete contradiction to say.....This team only won the Super Bowl because of the Ray Lewis retirement announcement. Then turn around and talk about how the Ravens lost too much talent from a Super Bowl winning team?

If the Ravens weren't really a Super Bowl team last year and just "got hot at the right time" or "won it for Ray" wouldn't it be smart for the Ravens to attempt to upgrade their team?

It's more like a weaseling out of giving this year's team a chance. No one thought we would win because of Ray's retirement magic before it happened, and now they need a reason to count us out. So extremely biased hindsight says we only won because of factors that are no longer there.

Even before our Colts victory, people were saying the Colts would win because of Chuckstrong. Then it was the defense would be too tired (and old) in Mile High. Then again they would be too tired to keep up with Brady's no-huddle. That's 3 times in a row that motivation and Ray/Ed's age were used against our odds. Now suddenly those are the reasons we won?

Baltimore fans are used to winning ugly, we have watched ground and pound and defensive struggles since the teams conception, all we expect from Joe is to move the chains, throw it deep now and again, and win.  If you want to play fantasy football draft Drew Brees, if you want to watch your favorite team in the playoffs year in and year out, be a Ravens fan.

Skip: But, but, but Total QBR which is an invention of ESPN and is only ever used by ESPN of all the sports reporting outlets over there...I believe in this statistic because I work for ESPN and it happens to support my subjective point of view.

As far as Danny K (Danny who btw? Apparently played at least at a college level according to Jaws here), he simply regurgitated the same hashed lines that almost every generic talking head has come up with since the team won the Super Bowl, good job man.

Always liked Jaws and I obviously continue to, thanks for posting this Marcus.

Good to see Jaws thinks were best in AFC, cause know one else really even thinks were even going to win the division hah. All the talk about is what we lost but really what did we lose? HUGE RLewis fan, but other than his speechs, he really wasnt to big on defence, got to way to slow and couldnt move. EReed cant tackle and also cant say on field. Kruger simply got paid cause T-SIZZLE was out, Browns will find out. Only person i miss is Boldin really, other than Torrey dont know what anyone else is gonna do/perform. Our defence though is looking better than it has in past 3/4 years, and as 2000 ravens showed, defence can win you games, ares looks best in afc

It's kind of silly to make these type of comments already, we're in the preseason, how can you say this team is the best in the league or that team is better in their division based on a couple almost meaningless preseason games? I don't agree with Jaws or the other guy. On paper we have improved I'd say. Yeah we lost Ed and Ray but we added better players on paper (Huff, Daryl, Dumervil, Canty, list goes on). Flacco was awesome but I wouldn't expect him to put up those numbers again, not turning the ball over in 5+ games or something like that. The AFC is way too competitive to say right now team x is the best. The Bengals look competitive although IMO I'm pretty sure we'll handle them. The Browns even look kind of competitive. Jaws sounds extremely pro-Ravens, he really tries to defend his opinion and kind of gets aggressive when Skips tries to argue with him. :D

Danny still remembers that beating he took with the Broncos against us, I think Ray had a pick 6 in that game.
