Ravens Trade WR/KR David Reed to Colts for RB Delone Carter

272 posts in this topic

Happy to get rid of Reed but I still don't really understand Carter's role

Pretty sure Carter is an ok power back who just fell behind so many guys in Indy. Maybe it was a cap move, but if not, its not looking good for Anthony Allen or Damien Berry.

The fact that we resigned Reed in the first place, have problems at receiver which we proceeded to amplify (even insignificantly so) by getting rid of another receiving option for a position we absolutely don't need.

Can never have enough backs - and I'll defer to Ozzie. He had the mind to draft Ray Rice (after McGahee made a Pro Bowl) and trade up for Pierce.

Reed would have been cut, anyways. We at least got something for him.

No its actually backwards for us because we have problems at the receiver position and all we did was make them a bit bigger considering the fact that while insignificant Reed was a receiving option.

What was David Reed gonna give us, honestly?  After Torrey and JJ, all I saw was a bunch of Demetrius Williams's.  Saw some life out of Mellette, but that's it.

Pretty clear that Reed was going to struggle to make the team. He was fringe 5th/6th option and hasnt done anything to separate himself.

Tbh given the lack of receivers and Reed's ability to contribute on S/T (especially since we probably don't want Jacoby returning kicks), I'm not so sure this is true.

Reed wouldn't have made the team anyways.

I believe Carter only notched one ST tackle last year.

I'm actually glad Reed is gone.  It just seems like bad things happen when he's around the ball.  But I don't see the point of this trade.

Ohh okay, well there goes that theory! Still don't feel like we're losing out on anything here... Never doubt Ozzie though he always has a plan!

Just saw the update that it was for David Reed. Wasn't a fan of him as a wr, good ST player though. Looks like Reed would've been cut anyway with guys like Mellette, Marlon Brown, and even LaQuan out performing him as a wr. Just couldn't carve out a spot for himself on an extremely competitive 53 this year, wish him all the best in Indy.

Why is everyone complaining when nobody had Reed making the team on the 53 man roster. At the end of the day it probably saves us money. I'm sure Carter's contract was cheaper and at the end of the day if he doesn't make the team it will cost the organization less money to cut him at the end of training camp than it would David Reed. Look at the bigger picture people our front office knows what they are doing

I have no problem with this trade.  Reed never impressed and this creates more competition for the #3 RB spot behind Rice and Pierce.  I don't see us being as deep at RB as people like to say.  I haven't seen enough of Anthony Allen to feel one way or the other (at RB).  We're basically 2 deep at that position (locked up) right now ... why not see if he's a better #3 by trading someone who you were probably going to drop at some point anyway?  Where's the downside on this one?  I don't see it.

Love it.

Obviously Reed wasn't impressing. Some of you have said that it's foolish because we don't have depth at WR. I disagree entirely. First, we have PLENTY of wide outs. What we need is a quality one. Having a lot of wide outs doesn't make up for not having a good one. Second, Reed wasn't even playing at WR in the preseason. What does that say about him? Thirdly, this guy can probably compete for the 3rd RB spot. He might even be able to take it. Judging by his stat line and link to Caldwell, he could contribute to the offense.

What does this trade indicate? Maybe it means we don't have faith in our RBs behind Pierce. Maybe it means we plan to use Rice in the slot even more. Maybe the FO is weary of Pierce's injuries.

Regardless, it's a low risk move with absolutely no negative consequences.

Seems to me that there might be a much bigger trade behind this one. Is Rice untouchable?

I think this makes zero sense, and yes Rice is untouchable.

I know Berry has looked like poo and Allen has never turned out to be much of a RB. Rainey I thought would make the team as the 3rd, but he hasnt gotten much work this preseason and has primarily done ST work.

Can he catch?

Not really.

If Rainey is a Rice clone, Carter is a Pierce clone (except I wouldnt cringe if I saw Carter enter a game)

Not a bad thing. I liked David Reed but his injuries were always a concern. I do think he was a terrific return man. I like Carter though so the move is a good one. At least we got something for David.

Tbh I feel Reed had a better shot of making the roster due to necessity than any back not named Rice or Pierce. I don't think CArter is significantly better than Allen. I'll defer to Ozzie tho.

Special teams returner (in place of Jacoby) and receiver depth (a position we are very thin at)

Special teams returner (in place of Jacoby) and receiver depth (a position we are very thin at)

Dont even get started on his ST accomplishments

And he is (was) one of the reasons we are so thin at WR

Agreed, but at least there was a necessity for him. He could be used to return kicks in place of Jacoby and he provided receiver depth in which case not everyone after Torrey and Jacoby are about even. Delone Carter provides absolutely nothing imho.

Let's make it perfectly clear...

Reed, if he even made the team, with his $2M salary, would have brought us next to nothing. Trading him for a  half-eaten crabcake would have been a great trade.

I didn't say he was quality, just that we need bodies there more than at rb. And yes he fumbled, but he at least could be used to prevent Jacoby or Deonte (should he win a spot) from getting hurt returning kicks. Carter basically does nothing for us unless Pierce gets hurt in which case he still does nothing because he isn't good enough to steal carries from Rice. Anyway, I dont see Carter as really any better than Allen so yea.

My guess is they were planning on cutting him but at least got something in return.  The Colts probably initiated the trade.  He is a decent receiver but a quality kick returner, a position we have filled by Jacoby Jones and Deonte Thompson.

This RB is a big guy so maybe he's a goal line/short yardage type guy.  Rice rarely converts 3rd and 1s.
