QB Joe Flacco

286 posts in this topic

It was a 6 game stretch. He definitely does not have one of the best INT% of all time

I wouldn't sound so sure of that if I were you...

Among active QB's true

Yes, among active QBs he is third. Aaron Rodgers, and I forget the other one, but I'd imagine it's Brady. So Flacco is third among active QBs.

He also is tied for 4th in NFL history.

Edit, tied with McNabb for 4th.

Thanks for the link, bean

You should've seen the game day thread lol.

Put TYROD with the ones. He plays like a $120 million QB.

I tho he had three bad passes. Two to mellette. The one he got nailed and the deep ball. Then the second int to VS. He looked on point for the majority of his other passses. Im not holding him responsible for the first one.

I do think a lot of the sloppy play is due to the receiving corps. That being said people continue to deny the fact that one of "Saint"Joe's weaknesses has always been reading defenses and that he has had problems with staring down receivers throughout his career. The pick six in Broncos game in the regular season last year was an example of this. With Pitta and Boldin he was able to make much easier reads and rifle the ball(what he does best) to the extremely sure hands of guys who both easily found their way into the sweet spots of zones or ran crisp routes or bullied the defender, respectively, to get open and bring it in. There is no need for panic though because its just another area where Joe will have to improve this season to adjust to the different personnel and I think he will be a better QB because of it. This is a good thing for the progression of Joe Flacco.

Int's should not result in a TD for the other team and on back to back possessions I mean we just one a Superbowl last year... We are a different kind of bird we played like turkeys we need to play like Ravens...

I want Troy Smith !!!!! The reality is we are going through a lot of experimentation with the receiver and tight end positions that we didn't have to deal with the last couple of years . Because of this ,it doesn't surprise me that Joe has thrown some picks as the coaches wanna see who can play and you can't . In fact , I'm sure that Joe is zeroing in on certain players with throws he normally wouldn't make . On a level of 1 to 10 , with 10 being very concerned about Joe's play , I'm at a 1 primarily due to all the new receiver experimentation going on.

please explain this... I don't understand this logic, can he make the receivers catch? Or run the right routes? Or be more physical? Or be faster?

I think we as Raven fans are spoiled to the point we dont understand how building a football team works in the NFL. You cant have a great O-line, Flacco, Ray Rice, Great D & outstanding WRers. There has to be a weak link in the chain somewhere on any team. As far as I can see WRers are our weakness at this point & because of the cap it may not get any better so Flacco is going have to make it work with what we have.......For the love of GOD there's a 37 year old playing WRers on our team, that should be the red flag for everybody.

I want Troy Smith Damnit !! Joe hasn't won us anything ! 11 Tds 0 picks ! I'm not impressed . 20 Tds 0 picks would have impressed me . What ? He tied Joe Montana's playoff record . Joe Montana was overrated . Thus , Flacco is overrated ! I want Troy or a trade for Sanchez !

Making it work the best he can? Yes.  Depending upon, or expecting Joe to make them better?  No.  That's just a talking head phrase that is constantly misused.

You hit the nail on the head(well, almost ;)). Our FO works to field a balanced Team that is very good in all areas so as to remain consistently competitive. We don't overpay for "marquee" FAs. If that means we suffer a little in one area or another, we live with it. I think the situation will end up being much better as we progress through the season as chemistry develops with the fringe WRs.

I think there's a lot of cause for concern, but it's not because of Flacco. As has been mentioned, look at who he's throwing to. Can Torrey Smith be a legitimate #1? I don't know. Is Jacoby a legitimate #2? Probably not. And after those two, come the real question marks: a laundry list of rookies, career bench warmers, and people out of their prime. When a 37 YO Stokely is far and away the closest thing the team has to a known commodity at wideout, that's not good.

And the TE situation is even worse. Dallas Clark looked completely lost on Thursday, and Shiancoe is just not very good nor reliable. When Tom Brady running a TE-centric O can't make you decent... well. And who knows when Dickson will be 100%, and even if he is, it's not like he has great (or any?) rapport with Flacco.

I'm not trying to get the jump on rationalizing a potentially bad season nor am I suggesting this is a throw-away year when I say this, but I think this may be a blessing in diguise for the growth of Flacco. He's the unequivocal leader of this O and co-leader of the team now- new roles for him. I think this sets up the perfect opportunity for him to test the limits of his leadership and playing ability. He doesn't have to worry about windows closing for veterans and the team, or being tasked as a game manager first and playmaker second. For the first time in his career, he has the freedom to just go out there and play, and not be afraid to make mistakes.

Going wait until week 4 before i give my full opinion on Flacco but like i said before this Organization is looking for him to MAKE the WRers around him better.

You can't make guys get separation off the line when they're pressed, you can't make guys make their own in game adjustments on blitz recognition and you for damn sure can't make guys catch passes.  I don't understand the argument that a QB can simply make a WR better because the QB is good.  There's so many variables in football that you can't account for.  We run a vastly different offense than ones like NE or GB or NO simply because we have an Oline that is better at run blocking that pass protection and we actually have a real HB, two of them no less.  So Flacco has far less opportunities to just air it out like Brees, Rodgers or Brady.  We'd also absolutely freak out if Flacco threw 19 ints in a season, regardless if he threw 30 odd TDs like Brees last year.  We'll see how Caldwell does with scheming guys open but Cameron was awful for just expecting guys to get open on talent alone, you dont see that with offenses like NE, NO or GB.

I think it's just too easy and bit of a cop out to expect a QB to make his WRs better in every facet.  Should he make them better absolutely, but he can't make guys catch the ball or get them separation.  Everyone says Boldin balled out in the playoffs, and he did, but people easily dismiss the absolute pinpoint accuracy Flacco had to throw those balls to Boldin with.  Boldin had zero separation, but did Flacco make him a better receiver in the playoffs?  I dont think so, I think Flacco was just playing phenomenally.

Amen to all of this!

There's so much gray area when it comes to "QBs making WRs."  I mean guys like Peyton/Eli/Brees/Brady/Rodgers have shown a knack for elevating the production of otherwise medicore WRs in the past, but on a play by play basis, most people who think QBs like Flacco should "make WRs" aren't able to look at an individual play and say "this is how Flacco can make this guy better, or bail his receiver out."

I'm not saying QBs making WRs is a myth, but it's not nearly as simple as people seem to think.  QBs can't make WRs make plays or catch the ball or run the right route etc....
