Which receivers have earned a roster spot so far?

158 posts in this topic

In my opinion these players have earned it:

Wr's

#1 Torrey Smith

#2 Brandon Stokely

#3 Aaron Mellete

#4 Laquan Williams

#5 Marlon Brown

#6 Deonte Thompson

TE's

1. Ed Dickson

2. Dallas Clark

3. Frustenburg

How would you rank them?

Torrey Smith

You aren't impressed at all with Mellete, WIlliams, or Brown? I think they at least should try this line up for the next game (except keep Torrey out of the game as he has nothing to prove), this way we will know if any of our young Ravens can step up... Jacoby Jones may be better off just returning kickoffs, punts, and should take a pay cut tp reflect it. Play the players who want it more.

That's way too much uncertainty at WR. Thompson and Williams are inconsistent and both Mellette and Brown puts too much stock on rookies.

Not really. They made a couple of catches against 3rd stringers on teams with no depth. I would like to see more Mellette, but Brown has more drops than catches and is very unpolished in addition to not being fully healthy. LaQuan has shown flashes, but overall still struggles with route running and has inconsistent hands. Mellette has the most upside of those 3, but he has been inconsistent in TC and has never gone up against real competition. If anything I want to see Mellette compete against first string.

I'd still have Doss as my #3. At least I have seen him play in real games and make plays. That's more than I can say for anyone not named Torrey and Jacoby. Jacoby has been the worst of the bunch IMO but his roster spot is not in jeopardy.

I think Torrey and Stokely are the front runners (obviously) but I think Mellette and Thompson have earned their spots. I don't think Doss has done much to earn his spot, but you can't really blame him totally, as he did not get many passes thrown to him. I don't know if I want him to earn one because I feel the other wide receivers have more potential. But still we have two preseason games left. Williams has shown some bright spots but I'm still unsure of it. I'm not going to go on Jacoby Jones because his preseason has not been good. But it is only preseason. David Reed I haven't seen much of.

I do like what I have seen from Furstenberg though. Shiancoe... Well we've all seen him. I want to see Furstenberg with the Joe Flacco and see how he is. I hope to see more of Marlon Brown, too. I think by next game we will begin to see who will step up.

So my list looks like
WRs:
1. T. Smith
2. B. Stokely
3. J. Jones
4. A. Mellette
5. D. Thompson
6. M. Brown / L. Williams

TEs:
1. E. Dickson
2. D. Clark
3. M. Furstenberg

I have to disagree about Doss as I just don't think he can play on this level (I hope he proves me wrong) but he has had more than enough opportunities. Jacoby I could see as a #3 but to pull that off we need a real threat at #2 so he can fly under the radar and make his big play here and there, Brown, WIlliams, and Mellete, I would like to see IF they can compete with the 1's... IMO a play maker or two could emerge from that group... If we cannot find at least two legit baller's to go with T. Smith then I think Oz may seek out a Trade as there isn't anyone on the market that will upgrade our roster at this time...

Its preseason so what do we have to lose? Play Brown, Williams, Mellete, Thompson, and Streeter to see if they can make plays

I like Frustenburg ALOT! He definitely can ball. I think he may be as good as Dickson or better as a pass catcher- he has zero drops, plus he can block, and he runs FULL speed!

WR:

Torrey

Jacoby

Deonte

D. Reed

Doss

The last (likely 2) spots are between Mellette, Stokley, and Laquan. Someone could tweak and ankle and go on the PUP though, which makes the decision much easier.

TE:

Dickson

Clark

Furstenburg

Bajema is not out of the question because Furstenburg is PS eligible.

its only preseason Doss isnt the only receiver in his third year that  didnt have fantastic preseason game and didnt turn it up in the regular season. Streeter has not been performing well in training camp at all but you still want to see what he has over doss i guess speed does matter after all atleast to  some fans.  Golden Tate is a receiver that comes to mind that didnt  have great showing in training camp but turnt it up in the regular season

It's not exactly what Thompson has done, but it's what Doss hasn't. I know that they have both have had dropped passes but I just see more from Thompson such as his running etc. I'm not trying to hate on Doss, but I see this as a final chance for him because he has been here for three years and I'm still not seeing much. If he had the ball thrown his way more I'm sure we would see more catches, but neither Joe or Tyrod have used him much. I want him to be a great player but I just don't see it at the moment. This being said, we have weeks left of preseason and I would like to see him be better.

No WR outside of Smith and Jones (if he was going to be cut, he'd be gone) are absolute locks. Stokley will probably make the 53. Doss, Thompson are next closest even though neither has done much. Williams, Reed, and Mellette have to make some plays to stay in the mix. Brown, Streeter, Carter, and Shepard are pretty much done.

That's because Streeter hasn't had nearly as many opportunities as Doss, its his 2nd year, plus he is 6'5 (as is Marlon Brown), and runs a 4.3. His hands cannot be any worse than Doss and that's for certain.

I'm beginning to think that Jones can be a #3 IF there is a strong #2. Last year Boldin, Smith, not to mention Pitta, were such a handful that Jones benefited to the point he could be effective... His game (ouside of returning kickoffs and punts) just isn't strong enough to be a threat on its own.

I was on the Streeter hype train at the beginning of preseason but honestly he hadn't shown much. But I agree if we see more he may show more. I like Marlon Brown as he seems to show what we expected/wanted from Streeter. Seeing more of all the receivers will not hurt as it is only preseason.

I cannot think of a justification for this. Williams and Mellette have out performed Doss and Thompson already and should be running with the 1's next game IMO... IMHO Doss will end up cut.

Well since the question is who EARNED a spot on the team, I don't feel like a smart you know what by saying Torrey Smith.

I want to see Joe get a series with all of these guys. Hell bench Torrey for Preseason game 3, we know what we have with him.

This. I would start all bubble receivers next game to see who is who... the lineup would be

Stokley

WIlliams

Mellette

Brown

Streeter

Reed

Doss

Maybe but I'm basing that off what the coaches have said about them and the fact that they've been lining up with the first team rather than their production (or lack thereof) in the preseason.

I was just saying those bubble guys need to stack some more impressive performances (like they've generally had) to solidify.

Doss has been messing up but I think the team likes him

you know, this sounds so familiar with Torrey's situation (vs the fans) until his big game vs Rams; I know Doss has been longer in the league, but he hasn't played as much as Smith  - and if the team likes him, they must know something we don't get to see during the pre-season games; to be honest i think there's more of a chance we cut Jacoby than Doss (cap hit involved in my thinking here too, not only play value)

But why Thompson? He hasn't shown anything either. At least I have seen Doss run good routes, and catch the ball. I'm not saying this directed at you, but there is such an anti Doss bias on these boards I just don't understand. He will make the team I am very confident in that statement.

Yeah... unfortunately the team does seem to like him, I just don't see what they see I guess... maybe its because they drafted him 4th round and hate to be wrong about picks so they want him to fit... or it could just be his cool tattoo's Lol

Or maybe its because he has actually contributed to the team and improved his game.

In practice maybe? Other than that...I must have missed it.

That's not even debatable imo. Who else would we have at possession receiver(other than Stokley) and why waste all this time if we won't give him a full shot? That being said Thompson has been injured and he brings something totally different to the table and should get another year before being cut, Doss should be cut at the end of this season if he hasn't produced up to our standards. The anit Doss bias comes from everyone being high on Doss for no reason. He has been and will be what he is, an average receiver who can contribute if he stays healthy. The problem is so far he has been pretty bad in his showing in preseason against tight man coverage. I know the Doss supporters like to cry "no big deal", but when the team asks you to get open and you try to do so but can't against rookies and 2nd and 3rd stringers despite trying hard(while in a position battle), its a big deal. Doss will make the team(100% sure) but whether he will ever be anything more than average, I'm not sure of because it doesn't look like it at all. He still has serious weaknesses(since college) in his game that have gotten only marginally better and prevent him from besting the physically superior players he often goes up against while not showing enough technically either.

Must have.

Gabe, you're really high on Doss, huh? What do you see in him? Im sure you've stated this many times, but Im not on here as much right now. Just curious...

I agree with you. I'm not anti doss at all. I want him to be great. I do not mean to hate on him at all. I happen to like Deonte, but if Doss makes the team and Thompson doesn't I will not be upset in any way. I want the best players to make the team.
