Center competition

I find it a bit ironic that no post has been made for our MOST competitive position battle in camp.

Yes, I understand that we're looking for other receiving options to open up, but all of the post seem to be about the same thing. "Who's going to step up opposite of Torrey and catch passes from Joe? Which TE/TE's are going to step up after the loss of Pitta?" Redundant.

Last year Birk was probably the MVP of the O-line, especially in the post season. His presence will definitely be missed.

Unfortunately, I missed the Falcons game due to work so I can't grade Shipley's performance until I see it on NFL Network. What I saw from Gino in week 1 against the Bucs impressed me. He looked smooth and fluid out there.

I know that we're only halfway through the preseason but who would you rather see as the man under Flacco?

After yesterday's game, Gino for sure. The very first play of the game Shipley committed a personal foul and set the team back 15 yards for a 1st and 25.

After last night, I'd have to say Gino has the edge. He performed pretty well in his start, while AQ struggled mightily in his. I'm not saying the battle is settled, but Gino should be in the lead at the moment.

It's Gino's competition to lose. Gino's best game was the one last season against the Bengals. That's a great Dline and Gino played really well.

What is funny is that no one has mentioned anything that wasn't pointed out by a play by play announcer, by my count Gino was responsible for a few complete breakdowns and missed assignments, I also read how Oher had busted plays, yet no mention of KO's complete inability to pull effectively last night, and completely whiffing on one pull.

That's understood, Gino is still very young. I wouldn't expect him to have a FLAWLESS game, especially in the pre-season.

I heard, we actually stole Gino in the draft right from under the 49ers noses, so that says something about his potential, imho.

Also, this:

Really? All I heard last year was how Gino was a major reach.

Anyone know what draft pick we gave to the Colts for Shipley? It's Gino's job to lose now,but in Shipley's defense with his 15 yard penalty,it was a very very picky call by the ref!! Jon Ogden said that himself while he was doing his tv analysis!!

Conditional 7th round pick I think.

Shipley looked terribad and Gino looked decent this treat in preseason. I'm not going to bad mouth Gino because he could be struggling due to missing Yanda. I'll give Oher a break as well. I'll be watching him in the season though.

Oher doesnt deserve a break hes a 5th year pro who was a first round pick.  When Oher leaves via FA, I wonder if Ozzie views RT or WR as a bigger need heading into the draft

I agree.. But he could be struggling as well due to the loss of Yanda. He played well in the post season once he was moved to RT, so we'll judge him once Yanda gets back.

If we really needed recieving options, don't you believe our Great Front Office would have drafted some ?

Redundant.

I am in the Gino camp, Gino has the most upside out of the two,   What really gets me is our OL has the potential to be absolutely dominant.  Our entire OL needs to get its act together.

I didn't say that we NEEDED receiving options, I said that we're looking for some to OPEN up, as in fill in the missing void. And we did sign stokley, Clark and VS, which shows that we have no faith in our young guys. And as of now we dont have a starting #2 at WR.
Every other post is about that..

Hopefully once Yanda gets back we'll see major improvements in our line. I'm looking for consistent play from our big boys up front this season.

I wonder how this competition would've changed if Jensen didn't get injured.

I would imagine it would be about the same as far as who is competing for a roster spot, but I think that injury ensured a roster spot for Shipley, starting or not.  Had Jensen remained healthy and not completely disappointing, Shipley might have been playing for a spot on the team rather than just a spot in the starting lineup like he is now.

well Shipley might've not made the team and we would've saved that 7th

I can't agree. Not necessarily. It's hard to say Jensen would have been better than Shipley. I wish I could have seen Jensen compete against Shipley, though.

I think Shipley will get another shot.. I can't see Harbs giving him only one outing to prove himself, I wouldn't have expected him to be competing for a starting job if he is garbage.

Am I expecting him to beat out Gino? No. But from what I've heard he had a bad outing against ATL and every player is entitled to a bad game.
