TE Visanthe Shiancoe - now released

51 posts in this topic

Well, I don't know if "this guy eats with a fork" or not, but he hasn't done much quality football playing for us in the past few weeks.  He's gonna stick around until Dickson comes back, but maybe not much longer unless he does some major improving the next two weeks.

Nice. Obviously Ozzie and Harbaugh disagreed with the Shiancoe apologists. He was terrible. This is same guy who got cut in favor of guys like Daniel Fells and Michael Hoomanawanui.

Hopefully this means Furstenburg gets a lot of playing time this year.

This says a lot about how we feel about Dickson's status.  It isn't like VS was doing great or anything, but I don't think we would have let him go if we thought Dickson was gonna miss time during the season with his injury.  Hopefully he won't.

Assuming Pitta ends up on IR or the PUP, this leaves Dickson, Clark, Bajema and Furstenburg fighting it out for three likely TE spots. I'm glad we cleared out the deadwood by cutting Shiancoe. I like this competition.

Fairly certain Banjo Bill will win the last spot because he's the only TE who can actually in line block. Furstenburg will likely be signed to the PS.

Good point. That's a strong possibility. I'm also wondering if they'll only keep two TEs, and slip Juszczyk onto the roster as the #3 TE instead of carrying two fullbacks and three TEs.

That's highly likely too as its strange to have two FBs and Juice isn't really a traditional FB either. Surprising we haven't see Juice flexed out on the line blocking in the preseason to test it out. Though with the injuries at TE already they probably won't want to go in with just 2 TEs.

I could see them going with 2 TEs if they expect Pitta to come back and they stick him on the PUP. Otherwise, I would agree that they would hesitate to roll with 2 TEs, but I'm very curious to see how they plan on fitting Juszczyk onto the roster.

I didn't think they were allowed to put someone on PUP to start the season if they didn't put them on PUP to start camp.  They could give him the IR-designated to return label, which I believe means he'll have to be out longer than PUP (8 weeks instead of 6), but that's only if they really believe he'll be back because they can only give that out to one person per season.  Even if they do that, 10 weeks is a long time to go with two TEs, especially since one isn't even 100% now.

I like him (Furst). He looked good. Shanko looked like crap. Good throw, bad throw, makes no difference. A receiver is supposed to receive. Boldin would have caught them. He wants to step into Q's shoes he has to catch them too. If he can't find someone that can.

Heck, Mason was catching balls with a triple popped shoulder. Damn I miss him!

I'm not sure why this should surprise anyone - even at his best Shiancoe was a fairly average player, and that was 6-7 years ago now.  I think people only know who he is because he and Favre hooked up for all those TDs the year the Vikings went to the NFCCG.

It's a shame when you have to cut dedicated, hard working guys like Shanko. Those are the type of veterans you want around your young guys.

At least we cut him now and gave him more of a chance to find other work in the league instead of stinging him along for another week or so when we knew we were going in another direction.

No, it is a shame when you get negged 8 times for be able to see what is actually happening on a football field.

No way this guy was making the squad. We want people that can play NFL level football.  Wake up, people.

we have a lot of depth guys, not a lot of quality. Hopefully what we view as mediocre depth talent, can prove to be quality starting talent. And those assessments on who to cut and who to start are so crucial... sigh, just another day in the life of a talent evaluator.

That Dallas game. Mason had such quick feet. He could beat guys with just his footwork. It's a shame Mark Clayton 1) didn't learn much from Mase 2) was just a copy of Mason instead of us getting a different type of receiver like Roddy White, who was available.

Anyway, what has passed has passed and it looks like we've learned from it. I think we're better at finding receiver talent than we were 5-6 years ago.

This has nothing to do with what I said.

Thought we would keep Shiancoe because he can block and catch. Furstenburg can't really block so I doubt he makes the team. Maybe I'm wrong, but I see Bajema making it as that blocker.

I remember when people were trying to tell me on here that he was going to have 600+ yards receiving for us this year after we signed him.  I thought he had a good chance to make our team, but that was a little to much to ask from this signing.
