WR Aaron Mellette

How do you come to that assumption though? What is it about what you've seen that leads you to believe he isn't a gamer?

Personally, I'm in a wait and see mode. He looked good on those 2 TD grabs but the point can't be made enough, he wasn't going up against NFL level competition. That's why I want to see if he can play the same against better players and more complex coverage schemes.

I was one of those people that said that.. All I knew then was "Who is Aaron Mellette, This is stupid 7th round blah blah blah" because I wanted Stedman Bailey or Ace Sanders. Moral of the story don't judge a book by when it's drafted. Now after seeing him in the games, researching him and hearing how he's doing with Flacco, I'll gladly eat my words and cheer for him. I like him a lot and I am beyond happy he is doing well. I want him to be a starter next to Torrey.

This is far too mature a response for this forum.  Well said.

Didn't the reports say that Marlon Brown got the 1st team looks ahead of Mellette? I understand the love, personally hope he gets a fair shot and can contribute.

But where's the Marlon Brown love? Apparently (at least how I understood it) Brown was getting more of the reps with the 1st team, though he didn't perform as well as Mellette did with his. That tells me they saw more in Brown than Mellette at first - or maybe we're all reading too much into everything and it's just due diligence in looking at everyone.

But how crazy would it be if the depth chart had both Mellette and Brown in the top 5?

I don't think he's ready right now.  I think we can work him in week 6-8.  Some time after the bye.

And John Eisenberg chimes in.... saying his money is on Mellette and Deonte to make the squad behind Torrey, Jacoby and Stokley. That leaves both Doss, Reed, Laquan and Brown on the bubble in his opinion.

While its just an educated guess, that says a lot to me. At the very least it shows me that Mellette getting 1st team reps isn't just due diligence or his turn in the rotation. It shows me that the coaching staff is legitimately viewing him ahead of the field and a possible candidate for the #2 spot.

My reasoning for saying #2 is that Jacoby is a lock for his special teams ability and as an outside burner. Stokley I think is a lock bc of his ability in the slot, but hes going to play that specific role not be the consistent, go to, second option. That leaves Mellette as the next guy in John Eisenbergs eyes with DT out.

Interesting for sure.

I think giving Brown 1st team reps may be more to see whether he's worth a roster spot than worth a starting spot.  He's got some injury concerns with his knee, so I'm sure they really want to see if what he can offer is worth more than what he can't, if that makes sense.  Basically, is he good enough to be worth putting up with an injury that may sideline him a few times this year?

It wouldn't surprise me, but I don't know if the Ravens would do it. I think Mellette has a higher chance to make the roster than some of the other guys. He and Flacco apparently worked very well while practicing together. Brown has a recent injury he's still recovering from (torn acl I think?), maybe he will go to IR or PS. I've really liked the two of them. I want to see them both with the first team offense on Thursday. If Mellette performs well in the next two preseason games, while continuing to work hard at practice, I think it's likely he makes the 53.

Two touchdowns is impressive but not in this context, uncontested against some practice squad scrubs. Hopefully he will be more that just another name.
