Melette either makes the roster or he gets the phantom injury and is IR'd.

With all the injuries to WRs this past year, at least 7 teams are looking for healthy ones.

So, Mellette would have a bidding war for him between the 49ers, Seahawks, Jets, Chargers, Eagles, Lions, and maybe the Panthers & Patriots if the Ravens tried to sneak him onto the PS.

I'm also high on him as a potential starter someday, but I don't think he's ready yet.

It's one thing to beat CBs who won't even be in the league come September, it's another to go against legit #2 NFL CBs and nickelbacks, and still get open and make plays. I think we're keeping Reed as our ST gunner and possible punt returner with Jacoby handling KR and that Doss (whether you think he deserves it) is in as the #4. That means Mellette is likely competing with Laquan for the final WR spot.

So he is even better Jones? If that is the case and Mallette replaces Jones then jones might be one and done here.

Well, Jones is still valuable where he played last season. He got booed out of Houston as the 2nd WR and that may happen here as well if he has to be that reliable 2. He played exceptionally well at the 3rd and 4th wideout spot so that's where he should stay.

Jones is best suited for going deep and stretching the field .He is NOT a No. 2 .If they keep him there we will have problems

and his kickoff and punt return performance may slip. It's not worth that happening.

Isn't that mainly what Torrey did last year when he was technically our #2?

It's not that I disagree with you, I'd prefer that Jones isn't the answer. But it stands to reason that Jones could potentially fill Torrey's role from last year in being the speed guy to stretch the defense, and Torrey becomes the true #1 that works the entire field.

My question with Mellette is:

How tall is he exactly?

In college he was listed at 6'4. In the pros it seems he's 6'2. In this topic a page ago he's 6'3. What's his real height?

nvm, his nfl combine player profile lists him at 6'2, and nfl.com at 6'2 and 217.

http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/aaron-mellette?id=2539221

Which would make him shorter than Jacoby Jones, who was measured 6'3 at the combine (yet is listed 6'2 and 215 lbs). For all Jacoby's "big play ability" he only scored 1 touchdown last year. We have a lot of fast, big guys at WR...

But for all of that, I think there's a difference between guys who can ball, and guys who can't. I'd be happy with seeing anyone but Torrey, Brandon and Jacoby starting in week 3.

I mean, I know these guys need to dress rehearse too. But a play or two should be fine.

Yeah, Torrey did more (case in point, jump ball fades and short flares, outs, comebacks...all of which Jacoby has shown he can not do).

But I'm afraid that this is the thought process of the offense and what they'll do with personnel.

Yea its not ideal... And I know Jacoby cant do all of what Torrey did, but he can perform the function of being the deep threat, although his inability to be as versatile will make him less affective at it than Torrey.

You can find the official measurement of players' heights and weights taken at the combine and/or their pro days on this site by using its search box:

http://www.nfldraftscout.com/ratings/probe.php?genpos=QB&draftyear=2014&sortby=tsxpos&order=ASC

Aaron Mellette is 6 feet 2.3 inches

Jacoby Jones is 6 feet 2.5 inches

I don't know that it means he's better than Jones, but more a better compliment to Torrey in 2WR sets. Jones brings a lot of the same that Torrey did last year, the speed and taking the top off.

I don't care who wins the job, I just want someone to step up and clearly win it bc that means hes playing well. I think we have 3-4 guys on the roster that can contribute, the problem is they've all looked pretty even and like complimentary or supporting cast kind of guys - no one has asserted himself as the legit #2 who can make plays for himself.

I think we'll see week 1 that Jones is the burner on the outside with Torrey being asked to do a lot more over the middle and intermediate type stuff until someone else legitimately steps up.

Torrey Smith being the possession guy might work(seeing what he did to the dirty birds on that slant route last week lol)

I agree with all of that but to make that happen we need a solid #2 and if that comes from Stokley or Mallete im all for it but I just dont see Jones being a #2 guy here.

Mellette made a big play on Chris Johnson in practice....then Chris Johnson got cut.

Who were the 2 WRs Mellette scored against on the Bucs and Falcons? Those guys might get cut too.

It sounds like Mellette is stacking days in practice now and doing well.  I'm not ready to crown him, but if the reports coming out are accurate I'd say he has a really good shot of making the team.  I still wouldn't want to guess who the six that make it are going to be, because those other three slots could be anyone really.  The only locks are Torrey, Jacoby, and probably Stokley.

Sounds like he has great chemistry with Joe right out of the gate, too.

Aaron Mellette = this years Justin Tucker :)

I'm already a fan.

ill just say this, i dont make these decisions, and im obviously not qualified to, BUT i would hate to see mellette not get a chance to prove himself for the 53, i really wanna see him starting in week 3, just for the hell of it, we have NOBODY else showing anything, at all, and using him about even reps with stokley, for 4 quarters, to see how he handles the big boys, and the fatigue of a full game, just please give this guy a fair shot, instead of someone like david reed, who imo, hasnt done much to warrant once again another wasted roster spot, he could be a victor cruz type, not a UDFA but close enough, this guy could be the project receiver weve been waiting for

We also don't know who'll be 'injured' this year.  Right now it seems Streeter is more likely to be on the IR again, although Marlon Brown is also a possibility.

Valid point, but the results of those plays aren't exactly why we are so excited. We're very excited because of how the touchdowns happened. Body control, the ability to track the ball and adjust, and the ability to catch through contact. I believe he beat Chris Johnson on a stop and go, which could indicate strong route running skills.

Aaron Mellette couldn't possibly be a positive thing for our offense because all I heard for weeks here after the draft was that we screwed up by not drafting a receiver that can help us. All those people couldn't have been wrong, could they? Go Aaron.

I was one of those people that said that.. All I knew then was "Who is Aaron Mellette, This is stupid 7th round blah blah blah" because I wanted Stedman Bailey or Ace Sanders. Moral of the story don't judge a book by when it's drafted. Now after seeing him in the games, researching him and hearing how he's doing with Flacco, I'll gladly eat my words and cheer for him. I like him a lot and I am beyond happy he is doing well. I want him to be a starter next to Torrey.

I hope he does break out but right now I don't buy it, he just seems like another preseason warrior.

How do you come to that assumption though?  What is it about what you've seen that leads you to believe he isn't a gamer?
