WR Aaron Mellette

Everyone is above Streeter at this point. He didn't get one rep at WR against the Falcons. I really don't think I've ever been so disappointed with a player before.

Calling Streeter a bum is an insult to bums. He belongs on the street, however.

Well, to be fair, I referred to him more as a disappointment than a bum ;)

What happened to Marlon Brown? Is he hurt?

Yupp. Still not 100% back from his torn ACL. He's expected to practice again early next week. I expect him to head to the IR.

I was surprised he even played. I figured he would've been a PUP guy lol. I like what I've seen from him a lot though. I think he has big potential. He's what I hoped Streeter would be

Is it just me or does Mellette seem to be more physical going after the ball then our other young receivers ? This is why I like this kid .

Im not disappointed in streeter at all we all knew he was a project usually  project players take longer than two years to develop  and he was  a sixth round pick  so its not like he was drafted pretty high or anything .

That's what I see too. I see a guy with body control, good hands, and the ability to catch in traffic. He's not as afraid of contact as others are. Yeah, his two touchdowns were in single coverage, but 1) How often is a guy actually in double coverage? and 2) he had to fight for the ball in each situation. The CB was on him tight each time, but he made the catch.

I definitely want to see him with the ones.

Effort is important. When you give the effort or lack-thereof that Streeter has displayed then it looks like you have no heart and no desire to play the game. Draft status doesn't matter when you have UDFAs giving their heart to make this team or other teams in the NFL. It's his opportunity since Boldin is gone and we have a need at WR. He's not putting forth the effort. He is running very, very, very lazy routes. He's not trying. He's giving up when he's not targeted. He doesn't even block for others to help them get more YAC.

Go back and watch the TB game and then go watch the Atlanta game. Streeter barely played against the Falcons and I think that's very telling.

I remember the hitch he ran in game one. Lazy route, and no effort at all after the catch.

It may have only been Division II but Mellette dominated. I'm sure he was double and tripled covered constantly and he still put up monster numbers. That tells me he knows how to get open no matter what. So far that has continued into the NFL albeit against backups. I really hope he gets some looks with the 1st team in the 3rd preseason game. There really is no reason for him not to given the production from the guys in front of him so far.

I would say so.  He's a strong kid.

Yes, there is a difference and Flacco is clearly the starter even though Tyrod fared better against backups. That's my point. A player doing well against backups isn't always a threat to a player facing starters. There are plenty of guys who look good in the 4th quarters of preseason games and don't even make the roster.

If anyone's asking, yes. I feel better about a guy who was given KR duties last year and is listed ahead in the depth chart over a WR who was chewed out by the coach last week and responded with a good game against backups.

By that logic no one would ever earn a starting job starting out as a dark horse because there's someone ahead of them and that's the way it should be. You'd just continually put out the guy who hasn't performed? I didn't say throw Mellete into the starting lineup on opening day, I said throw him a few drives with the 1s because at this point surely he can't be worse than a single catch and a drop in the numbers.

Aaron Mellette is definitely worth keeping on this team. I would like to see him make 53-man roster, but if he doesnt Ravens should definitely have spot for him on Practice Squad. I see a lot of potential there.

Exactly, no one is saying Mellette is going to be an outright stud from the start. Just that since no one else(in the WR battle) is doing anything worth noticing vs the opposing first team so why not give him a shot with Flacco. Just give everyone a fair shot in the preseason.

If he goes to the PS.. I see a team picking him up within a week or two.

Same. Teams out here are desperate man. People keep talking about practice squad but its like they forget they can be scooped right on up. Why take that chance when the guys we have, that people think should go on the 53 over him, are inconsistent and injury prone? Receivers are more likely to get taken from the squad I'm sure than other positions with the way the league is changing.

Edit: Practice squad would be great for him though.

They would have to run pass plays to see but they do very little of that in games. I would throw on every down just to see who can handel it. Who cares if you lose in pre season?

You couldnt be more right.

I mean we already know what to expect from RICE, ( nothing, unless he is thrown to )  I want to see what these receivers can do.

Also, can Shanco be cut already, he has caught one ball and has been targeted thee most all preseason. I think we know what we are getting with him. Which is Jack sqat.

These plays we have been running are horrid if i might add.  And why is J.Jones trying to catch a ball 3 yards short of a first down when its 3rd down. That is a Rookie mistake if i ever seen one.

Oh  and i do like Mellette but behind LQ Williams in the line up.  Ahead of  Dawlllll  i mean Doss. ( yes Doss reminds me of Homer off the simpsons, not too bright and i really think he has Pam sprayed on his hands because nothing wants to Stick)

By "the guy who hasn't performed", do you mean the players who the coaches decided should be listed ahead in the depth chart? All you've seen is a small 3-4 catch sample size and the coaches have seen them for months. I don't discount Mellette, I just trust the depth chart.

It has me thinking.. If Thompson or Rainey establishes themselves as a returner.. would Oz cut Jacoby?

Nah i doubt that. I don't think either of them can really do what Jacoby does as a returner, he is atop the league in that regard and is still a very good WR3 who can move outside and stretch the defense.

Neither of them are anywhere near as good as Jacoby.  Thompson lacks vision and Rainey doesn't have the burst or explosion.

Clearly Harbs and Joe bend over backwards trying to make Jacoby the  WR2. He got alot of attention during those pre-season games, but just like with the Texans, that position doesn't fit his skillset.

Jacoby is speedy, which is why he was effective in those individual plays in the playoff, where all he needed to do was beat the secondary in a foot race, but he doesn't have the hands to be a consistent receiver outside those few situation. He still seems to need his whole body to control the ball and I am not too sure his route running is all that great either.

I think the addition of Stokley shows, that the Ravens are about to give up on Jones being a WR2 (I've got to admit, that's what I hope will happen) and return him to the WR3 spot (where he is more valuable, imho). As the season progresses, we will most likely see some of our younger receivers getting more action on field, though.

Well you and me are on the exact same page there. Lol.

I think if we see Mellette with the first team offense on Thursday we will know more on how he is looking. I just wish we could see Joe be able to work with some of the young guys we have in the games. Torrey is obviously proven so they need to try out guys, such as Mellette. I want to see Furstenburg, too. Ever since the first preseason game and I heard Mellette had strong practices after Harbaugh called him out, I had been liking Mellette more and more. I have a lot of hope for him.
