WR Aaron Mellette

Mellette has shown more than Doss/Deonte/Jones combined.  I think he's earned an opportunity to get a run with the starters.

I'm really beginning to see that doing well in camp is absolutely meaningless.

There are those who play as they practice, then there are those who excel to a higher plane on game day.

King of the long bomb. I'd like to see them try him out on some of the intermeadiate and short stuff, just to see what kind of toughness he's got and what he can do YAC-wise. He was being touted as Boldin-esque from the draft (don't know if that's accurate or just lazy since we had just traded Boldin, I don't watch much college football).

To your point of coming back stronger after Harb's chewed him out, that's great to see. Asa 'squirrely butt' Jackson did it, too.

He was Boldin-esque vs that level of competition. He will have a long way to go to get there here, but I believe he will. He has well enough speed to pack on some more muscle.

The guy who who drops passes over the middle when he hears footsteps? Thompson couldn't even catch in college at Florida when Florida was steam rolling teams. I don't get the Thompson hype other than he can fly. I'd rather have a guy who can catch and get open, since neither Doss, Jones or Thompson are playing like they want the damn job I'd give Mellete a look with the 1s in some TC practices before the 3rd game. The group of WRs directly under Torrey have been pretty abysmal to this point, giving Mellete a look isn't going to hurt anyone's progression, maybe it'll hurt their feeling for a change though.

I'm with you. I went into work one day last year after the home opener and the HR guy was telling me how he and other Florida alum were shocked to hear "Deonte Thompson" and "Baltimore Ravens" in the same sentence...nevermind the fact that he was handling kick off duties.

What's funny about folks quoting the hype that the coaches give him, I never really hear the coaches dogging 1 player. Sure they may say a guy is developing and needs to focus on this and that, but rarely do we ever hear that a guy had a "brutal" practice. Most get glowing reviews; conversely, we regularly see Harbaugh putting able guys in his dog house (McGahee, McKinnie).

Hopefully, starting 2 days ago, Stokely grabs all the guys and spends quality time with them and Joe.

Curious also - where/when does Jim Hostler fall in this conversation? Not saying less than 100% accountability on the players, but we have noted in the past the inability of our WRs to run routes and get open. Just wondering...

Torrey looks great though, so idk if it's coaching or just the personnel. Plus, Hostler handles the playcalling duties from the sideline.

I knew someone would retort as such.

You don't think Torrey just had more desire to complete his game?

Flacco had one INT, I guess it's time to start Tyrod too.

Because obviously there's no difference between a veteran QB, who has established himself as one of the top players at his position, making a risky throw, and a young receiver with a reputation as someone who can't catch a cold living up to his rep.

Yes, there is a difference and Flacco is clearly the starter even though Tyrod fared better against backups. That's my point. A player doing well against backups isn't always a threat to a player facing starters. There are plenty of guys who look good in the 4th quarters of preseason games and don't even make the roster.

If anyone's asking, yes. I feel better about a guy who was given KR duties last year and is listed ahead in the depth chart over a WR who was chewed out by the coach last week and responded with a good game against backups.

When one player struggles against the starters and another does well against the backups, I don't think it's unreasonable to suggest that the second player get a shot with the starters.

I think its more that guys like Doss haven't done much vs starters or second or third string. Doss was playing in the 4th quarter, thats when he scored. Jacoby is just not a full time receiver, that can't be said enough. I can't wait to see Mellette vs better CBs.

Sorry, but he has to prove himself against 1st stringers. It's a much different game.

vs 1st string secondary:

Tight coverage requires concentration

More advanced routes necessary

Safety is right there for the hit

vs 2nd/3rd string secondary:

Easier to get open

Less physicality needed

Less likely to be hit upon catch

Give him a shot while Thompson is out, but I still like Deonte to win the #2 job.

Well I think it's not so much this year about him earning a starting spot, but him making the starting 53 on a team that suddenly finds itself without 2 of it's 3 top receiving options from last year.  I mean right now only Torrey and Jacoby have really proven anything as far as being receiving options, and if we say Deonte will be at worst number 3, so that still leaves 3 spots.  I think what people are getting at is Doss/Mallette/Streeter/Williams/etc. are all jockeying for those last spots, and Mallette after yesterday has proven he deserves consideration for that 4th spot, along with LaQuan, whereas Doss and Streeter really don't look good right now.

Everyone always forgets David Reed. Poor Reed.

I want to see Mellette against better competition. I think he has earned that much, but other than two TDs against weak coverage he hasnt done much. He did show nice hands and body control to reel those balls in, but he was 1 on 1 and basically given a free release on both plays. They were also very nice throws (surprisingly enough) that some of the other WRs have not been afforded.

Isn't he fragile? What is the point of having a good WR2 if he can't make it through 4 games? Might as well be a 3rd and 4th receiver we need stability right now.

The defender arm barred him, clearly pass interference, if you look at the play again. He fought it off and still made the  Td catch .

.

Right.... I just knew there would be a flag.   Maybe if he didn't catch it?

I don't care if it was against their 3 or 4, it was one helluva catch!

Well if Mellette does go beast mode in the regular season, I just want you guys to know I predicted he will become starter opposite Touchdown Torrey by the end of the season.. this was the same time everyone was writing him off to the practice squad.

He still has a long path to go.  But at least he's on the right path.  If he moves up the food chain, he'll face tougher competition.  The Falcons are notorious for having horrendous depth.

But one things for sure, he's leapfrogged Streeter pretty fast.

Ya.. Streeter is lackadaisical lol. He looks extremely lost but man if only he put his heart into the game.. his size and speed would be unmatched.

Everyone is above Streeter at this point.  He didn't get one rep at WR against the Falcons.  I really don't think I've ever been so disappointed with a player before.

Yea, I'm a sucker for the hope of a tall receiver who can go up and snag the ball, as well as burn a man deep.  Streeter has that potential.  But he doesn't seem to be that guy anymore.  He's still raw, but his potential ceiling is falling quickly.

Well, to be fair, there is a reason he went in the 7th round of the draft. His stature is what makes him attractive as a WR, not his ability. We all knew he was going to be a project player but he just hasn't shown the heart and desire. Low risk high reward... but looks like we won't be getting any reward at all.

I feel ya man... I'm actually a sucker for a big strong WR who will catch the ball in traffic and punch a defender in the throat for 3 extra yards.. that's why I was hoping we would've drafted Chris Harper.

I think the main reason I'm disappointed is because he doesn't try.  He has so much potential but doesn't know what to do with it.  If he at least tried and failed, I'd look at is as more of a "hey, it happens" type of thing.  Instead, I'm majorly disappointed because he hasn't even made the effort.  My job doesn't allow me to tolerate laziness, so it hits home even more when I see a player that just doesn't care.

You aren't alone though. I think he will be a contributor for us as well, but perhaps later in the season. If someone gets injured i think he can come in and do ok.

We get it.  Not to be rude here, but I swear I've seen you say this probably 30 times between all of the receiver discussion threads.  I'm sorry but it's just getting to be overkill at this point.

Right.. I think we are all dissapointed in his lack of effort. I'm actually dissapointed at all of our WRs not named Torrey, Aaron and Brandon... Doss flashed excellence his rookie pre-season, idk where that went.

Oh, another Wideout I had my eye on his Rashaad Carter.. do you know if he's seen any snaps thus far? The kid is big and I heard he's got pretty decent hands.

At least they're trying though. I can't fault them too much.

No, Carter hasn't seen many snaps at all. I heard he had one stand out day really and then fell back to earth.
