WR Aaron Mellette

I mean, we're starting threads all over the place for newsworthy players right? So I'll go ahead and announce myself as the Official President of the Aaron Mellette fanclub.

Harbs chewed him out in front of everyone, straight up embarrassed him. A lesser player would've taken his ball and went home. But Aaron has worked, and it clearly showed. Even before last night, I went to the practice on Sunday, and I remember having to constantly look at my roster sheet asking "who the heck is #13?"

I know it's just preseason, and he's going against 2s, 3s, and 4s, but when you have it, you have it, and frankly none of the other receivers not named Torrey have shown much. This is definitely optimism, but last night I saw a guy who doesn't fear contact, is confident, and eagerly goes for the ball. He has heart, and I hope he continues to improve and gets a chance with the first team.

I was a fan of him and wanted him as soon as quitton patton was drafted. So pretty much since the fourth. I think he was a steal. But I mean he has what 2 or 3 catches. Temper expectations a bit.

But he needs a run out with joe for a series or two to really evaluate him. Hope he gets thats. But it just seems like they are thinking 7th rd pick ir him. I hope not. Hope he has a fair go

I understand that I might be jumping the gun, but when the other WRs have shown NOTHING, it's hard not to lock in on this guy.

He's had about 3 quarters of play between the last two games, but if he keeps making plays it'll be hard to ignore him.

I like what I've seen from Mellette. He has deceptive speed with average routes but good hands. He seems willing to play ST and that's big. His best attribute is his ability to track the ball. I really was impressed by that a lot. He tracks the ball really well.

King of the long bomb. I'd like to see them try him out on some of the intermeadiate and short stuff, just to see what kind of toughness he's got and what he can do YAC-wise. He was being touted as Boldin-esque from the draft (don't know if that's accurate or just lazy since we had just traded Boldin, I don't watch much college football).

To your point of coming back stronger after Harb's chewed him out, that's great to see. Asa 'squirrely butt' Jackson did it, too.

he's def stood out. No one can argue that but I mean torrey was awful in preseason. unless he gets a shot with the ones it's all ifs and buts. But hes earned it.

They would have to run pass plays to see but they do very little of that in games. I would throw on every down just to see who can handel it. Who cares if you lose in pre season?

I honestly thought he would have to sit this year, but now I think he has (and deserves) an opportunity to make the 53-man roster, assuming we carry 6 receivers.  I could see him easily making it over Doss/Reed.

I think Harbaugh owes Aaron Mellette a starting opportunity in the dress rehearsal pre season game #3...after overcoming Harbs hard words and turning it up in practice, as well as recording 2 nice TD catches in his first 2 games. Mellette has outplayed Jacoby, Doss, and Deonte, so I think its time to see if he can run with the 1s. And he would get a lot of time to work with Flacco against the Rams since this will be the most playing time starters will get in the pre season...hopefully mellete gets to start.

Sorry, but he has to prove himself against 1st stringers. It's a much different game.

vs 1st string secondary:

Tight coverage requires concentration

More advanced routes necessary

Safety is right there for the hit

vs 2nd/3rd string secondary:

Easier to get open

Less physicality needed

Less likely to be hit upon catch

Give him a shot while Thompson is out, but I still like Deonte to win the #2 job.

At this point, Mallette has made our other WRs look pedestrian at this point. We may really need to look into FA or a trade if our 7th rnd pick is upstaging our starters not name Torrey Smith.

The guy who who drops passes over the middle when he hears footsteps? Thompson couldn't even catch in college at Florida when Florida was steam rolling teams. I don't get the Thompson hype other than he can fly. I'd rather have a guy who can catch and get open, since neither Doss, Jones or Thompson are playing like they want the damn job I'd give Mellete a look with the 1s in some TC practices before the 3rd game. The group of WRs directly under Torrey have been pretty abysmal to this point, giving Mellete a look isn't going to hurt anyone's progression, maybe it'll hurt their feeling for a change though.

True, but he can't prove anything until he gets a chance, which I think he's earned at this point.

Mellette has shown more than Doss/Deonte/Jones combined.  I think he's earned an opportunity to get a run with the starters.

I'm really beginning to see that doing well in camp is absolutely meaningless.

First things first, he needs to practice with the 1st string. If the coaches like what they see, then let him play some with them. We don't know what he is doing on the practice field all the time. That is where the coaches are looking for consistency.

Mellette deserves a chance at this point to run with Torrey and the first team.

Who says a kid from a small college can't make it in the NFL? Oh they said that about Joe too.

The same Thompson who dropped a ball that hit him in the numbers? I'd lower those expectations.

I'm also not very high on Deonte Thompson.

Deonte had a very good preseason last year and according to the coaches has looked very good in training camp this year until he got hurt.

Here's hoping for someone to step up .If one of these kids doesn't step up this year it could be a long season offensively.

I would hate to see the defense significantly improve ,which I think they will from last year and then have the offense weaken.

Seeing that Thompson has been listed above Mellette on the team depth chart  I would say he is more likely to win the job. But if you want to talk about his career several years ago in college, then I guess there's that.

Flacco had one INT, I guess it's time to start Tyrod too.

Yeah, I want to see him be more of a route runner.  I also want to see him attack the ball more in the air, but that's a finer point.

I really like how Mellette has performed lately, especially after hearing that his camp did not begin well at all.  With that being said, I think he's still questionable to even make the roster.  Torrey, Jacoby, and Stokley all have spots.  I think Reed's return ability likely gives him a spot as well.  Then we're left with Doss and Thompson, both of which have gotten tons of reps with the 1's so far.  Unless we carry 7, Mellette has to rely on one of Doss or Thompson not making it, which, despite them performing poorly, isn't likely to happen.

I'm really beginning to see that doing well in camp is absolutely meaningless.

Mellette's TD catch in the Tampa game was an incredible feat of body control I haven't seen from ANY of the

other young kids. You can't teach that. That catch alone ,which even the announcers were very impressed by ,

puts him above Doss and Co.

Here's my gut feeling about why Harbaugh kicked him to the sidelines in practice last week.

He sees the talent too! He wants to see how this kid responds to adversity.

My(meaningless, incorrect, you shouldn't even look at it) profile on Mellette is very promising:

Strengths: Good height, good length, deceptively good speed, pretty good hands, could benefit from being taught better route running from a real WR coach and against better CBs in practice. He can high point the ball up in the air, can make plenty of spectacular catches, good with his feet on the sidelines, has body control, and so far has proven to be quite durable. That is all a result of being "THE GUY" and is why guys like that get picked from small schools in the lesser division. Plenty of reps being the main guy is valuable no matter where you get it.

Weaknesses: Not very fast or agile so we won't be able to get much separation in man to man coverage often. Not sure if body can take the type of hits that will come at this level across the middle. Not strong at all for a possession receiver. Will get pushed around and pressed easily by stronger CBs as he is not very used to them. Remains to be see exactly how good his hands are in traffic against CBs who are looking to knock the ball away and linebackers and safeties who are looking to jar the ball loose with hard hits.

My prediction and summary is that he is a guy that because he was "the Man" in college is pretty confident and should be very consistent in running routes, catching the football, and intangibles(like keeping your feet in or keeping your balance after a acrobatic catch) that take rookies a while to fully learn because they haven't been in the situations as much as this guy has(despite the lower level of competition). Ultimately I think he needs to really hit the weights and get stronger so in man coverage he can bully weaker receivers around instead of trying to get massive separation(Like Boldin) and so he can take those hits in the middle of the field and in zone coverage. It will also help holding onto the ball when being hit and fully securing the ball when defenders are trying to knock it out of there in the air. I think becoming a poor man's Boldin(faster though) is the best route for him and he could be a solid durable WR2(ceiling) or a very good 3rd or 4th WR(floor) who sees a lot of time. I think he will need time to develop and could be a consistent contributor by the end of the year. His upside is driven by the fact that strength is key to his future game and that at the moment he has so little as well as him being a star receiver with a lot of snaps and receptions which gives him something NO WR we have right now had coming out of college as a pure receiver. A stronger and tougher Mellette could be the WR we have been waiting for. Then we will have 2 WRs we drafted ourselves starting and leave behind the notion Baltimore can't draft and develop good receivers.

Oh and add me to the fan club Mr president :242736:

The best players will win the spot. Time for Harbs to give everyone a shot and prove that he really does give everyone a shot.

I feel like were going to see more of him, along with Deonte Thompson & Marlon Brown, who didn't play last night.

He fought off that guy mauling him last night when he caught the TD.  I hadn't heard the Q comparison until you mentioned it, but watching him last night I thought of Boldin.

The defender arm barred him, clearly pass interference, if you look at the play again. He fought it off and still made the  Td catch .
