WR Torrey Smith

This guy is becoming an absolute beast. Watching his progression since his days in college has truly been a pleasure. Watching his 77 yard td last night was simply a snapshot of that development. He ran a precise, crisp route in the middle that did not used to be his forte. He had to adjust to the ball and he did that with little effort. He had an excellent run after the catch, not just speeding away from others, but also stealing a page from boldins book and stiff arming a defender to bust that play wide open. He is trusted by Flacc, and has made marked improvements on his prior weaknesses, and as a result, has improved his strengths as well. This guy is exciting to watch and I cant wait to see him play this season.

Agreed - we're talking about a guy who's done most of his damage his first 2 years running deep routes outside the numbers. In this offense i think we're going to see a lot more shorter routes, letting Torrey take advantage of his speed and agility to gain a lot of YAC in addition to the deep shots.  I have this feeling that a bunch of teams out there think they have a book on him based on his first 2 years, and they are all going to be in for a surprise when they see what he adds to his game this season.

He's a #1 WR. People just don't know it yet

He keeps this up, he will be a perennial pro bowler for years.

He's certainly the best receiver we've ever had.

He's been amazing. I really hope we find a reliable #2 (either through trade or on the roster *coughMellettecough*), or it'll all go to waste.

I always like to point this out, but Roddy White, who is now universally acknowledged as a top 5 receiver in this league, had 950 yards receiving and 3 TDs his first 2 years combined.

I definitely compare Smith to White and have done so since he got out of college.

Torrey Smith is not a #1 WR. It is a position designation. Teams don't have a split end and a flanker anymore. Guess what, the name right tackle does not imply he is never been wrong. Don't feel bad, Cam Cam coached in the league for many years and never got it, either.

I am not saying that TS is not our best WR. He may be our only NFL receiver on the roster. He would bring more in a trade than the rest of the WR's bundled together.

TS's job is to average 20 yards per catch. We don't want him on the field every play.  His type are to catch passes for long gains and TD's.  His job is not to move the chains.

The long TD was a great route run through a zone. The reason most teams play a zone is because they do not believe they have enough DB's that can cover man to man every formation.  The zone implies that every DB is relied on to make the tackle. Not just one man.

Torrey Smith has learned a great deal, and is improving every season, every game.

But, he is not a #1 Wide Receiver. #2 and #3 WR's make the Pro Bowl, but it does not mean they are #1 WR'S. It is not the skill set of a #1. It is a positional thing, not a talent level.

Top 5 he is not. Megatron,Fitzgerald, Andre Johnson, AJ Green, and Vjax. Roddy might not even be better than Julio at this point.

Vincent Jackson is no top 5 receiver either.

There's no way that he is, and I'd say that Andre is no longer a top 5 either, but that's highly controversial. The list is missing Marshall.

Marshall over Andre Johnson and Vjaxx.........

You guys are bugging. Vjaxx made Freeman a 4k yard QB.

I would also take Marshall over VJax. Not over Andre Johnson, though.

Anyway, I think it is entirely possible to see Torrey get into the discussion with guys like this. He may not be on the level with Calvin, Fitz or Green as the super-elite, but he can move into the second tier. I hope he will, I'm not sure he will, but it is definitely possible.

I would throw Julio in there, him and AJ came up so quick. It just that Vjax is my 5th and I have to give him the nod considering who his QB is. Julio is right there along with Dez,Marshall,Roddy, and DMT.

Are you serious?

Torrey's "job" is to continue to develop and he's going to be on the field as much as possible and he'll most definitely be counted on to move the chains. No forward-thinking coaching limits their most talented WR to a specific role; that would only make their O more predictable.

The more Smith develops all areas of his game, the more attention he'll command, allowing other weapons to make an impact.

I only caught the highlight of last night's game earlier tonight and I was so happy to see Torrey's big play. I was also happy to see his other catch was a short gain over the middle on a 3rd down.

It's a fantasy piece but this article on how Torrey's been utilized over his first seasons (with comparisons to Q and Mase) is quite interesting. With what's happened at TE since Harris wrote the article, I don't see why Torrey can't run more routes, generate more big plays and get more red zone looks like guys Roddy White and Reggie Wayne. He's obviously got the talent.

Please, thank your Baltimore Ravens for Cam Cam. He is thier product, not mine. And, he was a fovourite, on this board. He was John Harbaugh's idea of an OC, not mine.

Guess again ?

Torrey Smith didn't practice today. I see this as a great thing. I don't think he is injured, as Harbs said he was being rested.

Why do I see this as a great thing?  I am beyond happy with this, because it gives Joe a whole day to work with our new guys and try to connect and build with them. Torrey has proven that he can be our number one receiver. Now we need to look at our crop of other WRs. According the Jeff Zrebiec and Aaron Wilson via their twitters, a lot of our new guys had time to really work with Flacco on the first-team offense. According to the tweets, Brandon Stokely, Kyle Juszczyk, Aaron Mellette and Marlon Brown were getting a lot with him -- Mellette and Juszczyk caught touchdowns from Joe & Brandon Stokely was making great catches and was getting into a pattern.

I see this as a really good way for Joe to really connect with our new guys. Even if it is just one day, someone could do something right and end up working more and more with Flacco. What are you thinking from this?

This is what I hope they do on Thursday.  Torrey has nothing to prove.  I'd rather lower his risk of injury as much as possible and give all of these young guys reps with the first team.  It's a free for all at this point and whoever steps up gets it.  I expect Stokley to play a large role as he gets more comfortable, and I'm actually hoping Mellette is the one to step up and command a lot of reps.  I don't want to say he can do it just yet, but I hope he can show some promise against some better competition.

Torrey would just be taking snaps away from kids who need more work.

I don't think we've talked about how good Torrey looks.  He might be our most improved player.

I think if our rookies (Marlon Brown & Aaron Mellette) have a good week of practice, we will see them with the first team offense on Thursday. I'm hoping to see Stokely get a few catches that night too. Harbaugh said that they "Owe it to the team and owe it to them" to see how the new guys look with the first team offense this week. I think we will see them a lot with Joe this week in practice, then. Everybody cross your fingers and hope somebody really shines this week. I am cheering for Mellette.

Same. I want a WR to have confidence. I honestly feel like Tandon's confidence is shot. I hope not. I like his potential a lot.

Why did this get merged into the Torrey Smith thread? It really isn't about him, which is why I created a seperate thread. I was just pointing out with him not practicing, Joe got to work out with new guys as I was trying to draw attention to more or less every other receiver on the team not named Torrey.
