It's only preseason? Preseason game 2 thoughts

197 posts in this topic

My points from section 112, game 2:
1) Defense overall looked good. Although there were some chunks of yards given up, it was mostly due to Jimmy Smith being on the field. In one possesion alone, he was targeted 3 times in which he gaVe up 3 completions for over 40 yrds, and a TD. We were all told to give this kid another year to develope, but it hasn't happened. And I don't think it ever will, it's time to move on. IMO, Asa Jackson > Jimmy Smith.

2) #1 offense looked completely out of sync, but it's not time to panic. Stokely and Clark, I feel, will get in a rythm with Flacco by the first game of the season. O-line did well in protecting Flacco, IMO. Run blocking still needs some work, but again, not panic time yet.

3) Special teams = not bad. Decent kick coverage for the most part, solid run backs by our guys. Tucker, not suprisingly, was a stud. This kid is destined for a probowl spot.

Overall, I wasn't real impressed, nor was Harbs, by the firsts. Especialy with this being game #2. Lots of work to be done, but I'm still confident in our players and coaches to be ready for Denver. TADA GAN IARRACHT!!!

I can't get over the fact that Jimmy looked exactly like he did as a rookie, or at least we're saying the same things. Aside from getting beat by Julio Jones multiple times, the Falcons 5th string WR caught a pass over him. Same things with him - not playing the ball, getting sucked in on double moves, and general inconsistency.

Asa and Brown both look better than Jimmy.

I'm really sad that Asa is getting suspended. I guess the PEDs worked lol, because he's looked like the #3 CB so far.

The "b" word is going to have to be applied to Jimmy soon...how long do we have to wait for him to play well? One good play in the playoffs per year isn't gonna be enough. I remember reading that Flacco has a lot of success against Jimmy as well.

Does anyone else want to see Mellette with the first team O next week instead of Jacoby... or is it just me.

I definitely do but then again I want to see every WR play with the ones to see who has it and who doesn't.

Yea but those games the starters did not look as bad as the Ravens starters last night.

Yes they did.  I watched those games.  Brady played one series in the first game, 1 quarter in the second.  They lost 10-13 to a Bucs team that went 9-7 that year, then lost to a Tennessee Titans team that got bounced by one of the worst playoff coaches in NFL history, Norv Tuner, who holds the distinction of having coached the most games among coaches with losing records. Brady went 5-7 for 34 yards in game 1, went 10-19 for 145 yards, 1 TD, 2 INTs. So if you are going to sit here and say that the Patriots didn't look bad, then you're telling me you didn't watch that preseason.  Because I did - that was the year they picked up a hundred shiny new weapons, they were called a dynasty early, and after their preseason people were saying they weren't as good as everyone thought.  And they only went on to have a perfect regular season.

Even though we don't want to say "it's only pre-season" the truth is that it IS pre-season. That said, I do remember our team looking pretty bad in pre-seasons past. I remember worrying and wondering if they were going to fix what was wrong and they always did in time.

Getting Webb back will help a lot. I don't think Jimmy Smith has what it takes. I'm not happy with the O line or the receivers.

I don't think we have a solid #2 receiver now let alone a 3rd. I really believe Ozzie needs to put up a draft pick from next year and go get a SOLID, proven, younger receiver. Let Jacoby and the others fight for the 3rd spot. With Boldin gone and Pitta out we NEED a SOLID #2. And we don't have it.

Just my opinion.

Funny thing is I thought with the major personnel changes on defense i thought there would be a chemistry problem . Instead , with the loss of Pitta Boldin, Dickson and Birk there seems to be big chemistry problems on offense . I'm really concerned with Jacoby as our no 2 . Expect Torrey to get double teamed a lot this year . Who then steps up ? Now you know why Stokely and Clark were signed . I expect more balls to be thrown to them on critical 3rd downs then Jacoby .

I don't like the looks of the chemistry either and I hope they get it together. I do NOT think Jacoby is a solid #2 and I don't think we have a solid #2 on the team.

This is literally the same conversation we had last year and the year before.

Except this year we are saying what about Boldin & Pitta, last year it was what about Sizzle and the age on defense, the year prior it was what about Mase, Heap & McGahee.

When games matter, this team will be competitive.  Yes, its only preseason.

Yep we don't have a solid no 2 receiver. Torrey will see a lot of double teams the year .

This to me is the only real concern, the lack of a clear cut #2.

But we'll find out what works the best, and we'll use the double teams on Torrey to our advantage in other areas.

Well, with Torrey double teamed and the run game struggling a good part of the time we aren't going to see many points on the board. I'm not concerned with the entire team, it is only 2nd pre-season game and they'll get the wrinkles fixed. But these receiver questions have me really concerned. You can't get by with a high-powered QB and only 1 sure target. I don't like going into the season with questionable hands out there.

Exactly. Detroit tried this. Doesn't work.

They're trying to build chemistry there.  But Jacoby is just not playing good ball.  He looks lazy in his routes and unsure of himself.

Like both times he was targeted last week Doss was open for first downs.

That play, I don't see how it is on Jacoby. He was double covered. That has to be on Flacco, Jacoby never even touched the ball. That was just a stupid decision by Joe to target him. I also saw in the first preseason game, Joe tried to hit Jacoby on a third down play. Jacoby probably should have made that catch as he did get his hands on it even though he was covered. Doss however, was wide open right in the middle of the field about 10 feet away from Jacoby. Joe needs to get better at going through his reads, cause he is not doing it right now.

Not sure where to post this but Brandon williams has very slow reactions off the snap. Almost as if hes afraid of false starting

What did I just see in the second qtr. A greay play action by flacco. He used to be awful at selling them but the one to rice with pass to bajema was very very good

I do wish people would stop saying we looked just as bad last preseason though. We didn't. The offense was able to move the ball against ATL and DET last year, but couldn't finish. They moved the ball decently last week in limited time, but last night was a level of awful I haven't seen since 2011 @JAX.

I remember Torrey looked pretty shaky in the 2011 pre-season.  By the start of the regular season I'm fairly confident the team will figure out who the number 2 option is.

True, Torrey had time to develop with Boldin there. But I disagree and hope I'm wrong. I don't think we have a good #2 on the team. We have a few # 3's out there. Love Torrey but we need a confident set of hands out there with him.  jmo

Torrey was a high draft pick and a rookie. Tandon Doss has been in the league for 3 years now. The writing is on the wall.

Just give Mellette a chance...

That's not what I'm saying.

I'm saying instead of reading the coverage, it's like there's a conscious effort to get Jacoby the ball or he's just forcing it.  If it were regular season I'd be worried.  But in preason it seems like they might just be trying to get Jacoby the ball.  You just don't know in preseason.

You may be right, but the only way we'll know is if these guys all get their chance in the regular season.

My thoughts too.
But they have 2 weeks to improve.

Mellette is exciting.  He's beating third string corners like a drum.

I do think Yanda will make a huge difference. We'll see.

We should probably save our judgement on the receivers until next game. If Jacoby and Tandon don't do anything for 3 quarters, then we have a problem. Can't wait for Deonte to get back.

There you go. If we are going to be screwy for a few games, wouldn't you all rather it be during the meaningless preseason games? This is the time to make all the mistakes, and screw ups, when it doesn't mean anything.

Besides we did learn one good thing, which everyone seems to b overlooking. Our back-ups look great.

I was surprised how bad Sizzle, Joe, Ngata, and Rice looked.

Oh wait, they have nothing to prove!

Starters with something to prove: new acquisitions. Daryl Smith, Elvis Dumervil, rookies. Surprise, Surprise, they all looked good. I would've liked to see more out of Jimmy and our WRs competing for spots but oh well.
