It's only preseason? Preseason game 2 thoughts

197 posts in this topic

this is how im viewing it. sure, its all vanilla and simple, but our PLAYERS, not the system, looked awful tonight. and i said earlier, im not pushing the panic button, because its not even reg. season yet, but i can not remember a single preseason game where our starters looked this bad. next week im guessing we'll get a better showing, but that was the most hideous first half of football ive ever seen from our squad, even compared to our other preseasons.

That was honestly the worst I've seen the offense look since that Jacksonville game in 2011.

All I know is that AQ Shipley basically lost his chance at the starting job with what he put out yesterday. Hands to the face on his first play, blown assignments, a false start ("illegal snap"? my goodness...), and getting whooped to the point where Harbaugh pulled Ray Rice out of the game because of how crappy the OL was.

Funny thing is I thought with the major personnel changes on defense i thought there would be a chemistry problem . Instead , with the loss of Pitta Boldin, Dickson and Birk there seems to be big chemistry problems on offense . I'm really concerned with Jacoby as our no 2 . Expect Torrey to get double teamed a lot this year . Who then steps up ? Now you know why Stokely and Clark were signed . I expect more balls to be thrown to them on critical 3rd downs then Jacoby .

Do I keep needing to reference the 2007 New England Patriots who went 2-2 in the preseason, and the 2008 Lions who went 4-0?

Yea but those games the starters did not look as bad as the Ravens starters last night.

i for one see jacoby jones and a second round pick for a true upgrade in wr as viable if we dont do squat vs the panthers next week

You are right. You are "one" and only "one". I am fairly certain the coaching staff and almost no rational fan sees that happening.

The Ravens starters actually played worse than this in a real game situation vs. JAX in 2011. They still went to the AFC Championship.

I'm not saying they can't win games going forward just in both preseason games the starters lost.
The second or third stringers won the last 2 preseason games.

I want to see Rick Wagner start at Left Tackle for a quarter next week. Not saying he is better than Bryant, just curious how he would do since he has played great 2 weeks in a row at LT against back ups.

This. Wagner has been on point, and I want to see him against starters. McKinnie was terrible on running downs, and I'd like to see if Wagner is an improvement there.

I wouldn't mind seeing Wagner in at LT with the ones especially with the pass rush the Panthers have.

Maybe I'm alone here, but I didn't come out of this game being most concerned about our WR, TE, CB , Jimmy Smith, or anyone of that nature. I'm really concerned about our DL. These runs we've been surrendering are ridiculous. I have no excuse for it, either. Ngata, Jones, Suggs, & Canty make a strong DL. Something's not right here.

Does anyone else want to see Mellette with the first team O next week instead of Jacoby... or is it just me.

Yep.The kid has confidence .Let's see some short to medium routes from him and what he can do there.

Your not the only one, I would like to see what he can do. He has impressed me thus far...

Tbh, I doubt they're going 100% on every play which can lead to the other team gaining a few big runs. It's not much fun for them when asked to go 1 on 1 and just beat the guy in front of them... there's no stunts or exotic blitzes and they probably just want to put in their work and watch the backups.

Another thought, the offense kept going 3 and out and/or committing a turnover. The D looked tired going back out there after the offense kept giving the ball back to ATL.

I'm sure I'm wading into dangerous territory here...but when are we gonna talk about the fact that Flacco hasn't looked good either? The receivers are terrible, but some of his passes have been off-target. One of Shiancoe's "drops" was really a pass that was way too high. The pick in the last preseason game wasn't really his fault, but last night's pick was a terrible decision.

Yeah, the whole offense just looks lazy and confused.  But the only really bad play was last night, that was god awful.  It seems like we're really TRYING to get the ball to Jacoby.

I will give him the benefit of the doubt but I do think that Jacoby at no. 2 is a big mistake.

I noticed this when I went to the practice on Sunday too. Flacco kept targeting Jacoby for some reason.

They're trying to build chemistry there.  But Jacoby is just not playing good ball.  He looks lazy in his routes and unsure of himself.

Like both times he was targeted last week Doss was open for first downs.

I think the coaches want to see if he is truly no 2 material.

We signed Clark and Stokely not only because of the Dickson and Pitta injuries but because the

staff is worried about Jacoby at no 2 .

Who knows but maybe Stokely ends up at no 2 with Clark in the slot.

But will the coaches listen. Will they insist on keeping Jacoby at #2? I usually trust them...but consider that this was the brain trust that fired Cam Cameron 2 years too late.

They may feel they have noone better to take over the no 2 slot .I'm thinking Stokely may have a shot but Doss,Thompson, etc

have not shown much. Mellette deserves a shot to run with the no. 1's next game.

I really want to see Mellette and Furst with the first team. It's not like Doss and Jones have done anything to deserve to have the jobs handed to them.

I mean he is the 2nd best receiver, but he's not great.  The receiving core isn't that great.  But it's cheap, and that's good.

Listening to Vinny and Rob, he said the Flacco pick was deflected and didn't think it was his fault. It was kinda crowded so it was hard to tell what happened. I still think it was a bad decision but I'll give him the benefit of  the doubt.

Also said he thought Ihedigbo tried to be Pollard, I agree.

I don't like sports radio but I respect Vinny and Rob a lot. Only show I listen to.
