It's only preseason? Preseason game 2 thoughts

At least it was an exciting game.
I put more stock in the second half than I do the first.

Great depth, but it's still a bit worrisome that the second half guys (a majority of them) aren't going to be starting this year regardless of what they did tonight. The first half was scary.

Some quick, positive 'toughness' notes: Matt Elam slammed Steven Jackson to the turf on one play and Jackson watched the rest of the game from the bench as they put in his backup.

The Cowardly Ryan was diving left and right trying to get out of the way of Elvis Dumervil and Chris Canty. His last play consisted of, as Sandusky put it, "buckled knees".

Roddy White got punked by James Ihedgibo then rode the bench.

On Torrey's touchdown, he slapped William Moore's hands down on a weak arm-tackle attempt; Moore responded by taking a cheap-shot at Matt Furstenburg on the PAT... what a guy.

This makes me happy.

I love it when people overreact to one preseason game.

It remind me of last year preseason game 2 against the Lions when the first team offense didn't score a touchdown. The Lions beat us 27-12.

Flacco went 7-12 for 79 yards and Ray Rice had 5 carries for 12 yards. Everybody was freaking out over the loss and how Calvin Johnson abused our team with 5 catches for 111 yards and a touchdown. It was hilarious just like now.

In the end, the Lions ended up 4-12 and we won the Superbowl.

So, people can lose their mind all they want too, it has no meaning on the regular season.

Agree completely. Preseason is to feel out the team chemistry, and to get an idea as to which player can handle the pressure of "live" play. Its for the coaching staff to make assessments, not for the fans.

Sure its fun to win preseason, but winning or not winning is meaningless.

Ill be concerned if starting offense doesn't click next week

Especially with the tongue lashing and "man up" intensity they're going to face from the coaching staff. ;)

just because it is preseason that doesn't mean that I ignore how the 1st team is playing. i'm not blind! i can't stand it! for them to be the "starters" they are playing horribly at the moment. at least my boy Tyrod is ballin' and showing his value to the team when called upon. imo, the 2nd team is showing tremendous progress and promise. hopefully, our 1st team will get their act together and get it in gear the next game.

i for one see jacoby jones and a second round pick for a true upgrade in wr as viable if we dont do squat vs the panthers next week

I don't buy into the "it's only preseason" talk. This is where the road to the Lombardi starts. It's essential. However, preseason performances are NOT the end all be all.

That being said, McKinnie, Oher, Shipley, Reid, Jimmy, Shiancoe, and all wide receivers not named Torrey, Mellete, or Doss were stinky piles of garbage tonight.

We looked meh in preseason last year aside from game 3. Same with 2 years ago, and even in game 3 Flacco threw a pick-6. The star of that game? Lee Evans. That should tell you how much preseason translates to the regular season.

That said, that was as bad as I've ever seen the starters look.

this is how im viewing it. sure, its all vanilla and simple, but our PLAYERS, not the system, looked awful tonight. and i said earlier, im not pushing the panic button, because its not even reg. season yet, but i can not remember a single preseason game where our starters looked this bad. next week im guessing we'll get a better showing, but that was the most hideous first half of football ive ever seen from our squad, even compared to our other preseasons.

Yeah same here. It was first team vs first team, no excuses. The Falcons beat on us until our depth took the game over. That being said Yanda being out was key to our sputtering offense. We need both star guards to really run and pass effectively. Also Falcons weren't hit as hard as us injury wise. This isn't the end of the world, but the guys claiming "this is no big deal" when there were major concerns about the passing attack before preseason, are just as blind.

doss was horrible. a pathetic touchdown vs 3rd stringers means nothing

for some reason i still believe in doss.. that light switch in his head is gonna flick ON at some point this season, i just really have a feeling hes gonna be good, he just needs to get his confidence back, which im sure he didnt do tonight lol.

mellette has been looking awesome though, didnt expect him to make such an impression this preseason

I don't think Oher and McKinnie are getting enough criticism at the moment. They were great in protection, and I won't deny that. They did a great job there. However, Oher and McKinnie were awful at run blocking today. For someone who is supposedly a pro bowl caliber RT and a great run blocker, Oher looked pathetic tonight.

I watched the highlights. Elam demolished Jackson with that hit, damn.

It probably doesn't help Oher than he has a turnstile, also known as Jah Reid, playing next to him. Not to make excuses, but I'm sure that contributed. They were pounding the line at or between Shipley and Reid.

That's true, and a fair point. I couldn't believe how bad the running game was today. Reid and Oher couldn't move anyone.

2nd-half comebacks!   :ravensquote: Tyrod's proving to be a very capable QB2, someone who can shine when situations are thrust upon him.

Definitely a lot of poor performances that need to be fixed, especially on the OL. Shipley and Reid in particular had some missed blocks and Oher was spotty as well. Joe looked a bit off all night.

Jimmy got picked on a little bit, but he was going up against one of the best WR in the NFL. I think a couple of those plays were not entirely on him, especially the TD. He was playing outside leverage and expected safety help inside.

Carolina game is the last real prep to evaluate the 1st team.   If the flaws from preseason 1 & 2 keep showing up, we are in it for a long and dire season.   Our offense needs to step up a notch.  Constant 3 & outs are not fun to watch.

The Browns looked sharp in their last preseason game. Does that mean, they are the class of the AFC North now?

Oh you didn't know?  Brandon Weeden looked so good.  He, like Andy Dalton, is "already better than Joe".

I don't know man. Painter looked great in last years preseason. Maybe we should replace Joe with Curtis.

The Defense was porous. The Jimmy Smith I've feared made his appearance and no Cary Williams was present to back him up. The Safeties were awful. A.O. Shipley was a liability. The defensive line was pushed around. The Receivers were awful, with the exception of T. Smith who would be a game breaker on a more well rounded team. Whoever made these moves to reduce this team to this should have a job on the line.

Now if we can restrict play to our 2nd and 3rds vs their 2nd and 3rds, we may go undefeated.

Overreact much?
Julio Jones is one of the top 5 receivers in the league (IMO) and a healthy Webb (DNP) would have done way better defending him. Yanda(DNP)and Gino will probably solidify the O-Line opening day. Other than that, It will get better. So based off of 2 pre seasons games where the starters only played 3 quarters collectively, Ozzie's job should be in jeopardy?

I love Ravens football fans in August!!
