What will become of Baltimore's defense when Rex Ryan eventually gets the head coaching all coordinators dream of? Will we continue to have success? Will we continue to impose our will with exotic schemes? Or will we fade away and go back to a standard vanilla 3-4?

Ugh, Morbid..don't bring up such..morbid things. Who in the world are we going to replace Rex with? I think the orginization should make Rexy sit down, throw every defensive scheme and play down in a huge 'When Rex Leaves' binder so that we'll still have him when he goes. The next DC can just pick up where he left off. Or, we can give Rex a lobotomy and put his brain into someone else. Heh..now who's being morbid?

Haha, I agree. Would should give Rex a nice bag of money to leave his playbooks behind, take a piece of DNA and clone a monkey or something to call plays.

That standard vanilla 3-4 didn't look too bad in 2000! As long as Ray is here, our Defense will be fine!

Everyone said the same thing when Marvin Lewis left, when Mike Nolan left, the constant has been Ray!!

As long as he's here, I'm sure someone will be able to handle DC duties!

If I were the front office, I would give him a rediculous raise that is more then Harb's salary. If that doesn't work then we tie him up in the basement at M&T and tell people we have no idea where he is.

don't you mean the standard 4-3? Thats where Ray is at his best when he doesn't have to deal with blockers all that much.

I can only hope that Ray comes back as a coach when he is done. He has so much passion for the game and is already a great leader and teacher. He has been the constant on this D but he won't last forever.

When Rex goes it will hurt but I have a lot of confidence that Harbaugh will go grab somebody that fits our D. He has put together a great coaching staff in his first year so far and I am not talking about just the OC and the DC. Our O-line and RB coaches has proven to be some of the best with what they have done with this young group.

Our defense has been elite for about a decade now, we will do just fine if Rex decides to leave next season or the year after that.

:D I love that idea about the DNA. We should totally do it. Hell, they can inject it into me, I wouldn't mind making his salary!

On that note, I always dreamt of Mike Singletary stepping in as defensive coordinator eventually. Assuming Ray Lewis needed someone to learn from, of course.

What better scenario than to have Mike Singletary back on the defensive coaching staff (not necessarily as the coordinator), with Ray Lewis working as a coach alongside him?

Sounds like a plan to me! :)

I think that Mike Singletary should be the DC and ray be the linebackers coach...wow, two of the best linebackers in NFL history in the Ravens, now that would be good.

We'll probably tank it. I mean, when Marvin left, we stunk for years. When Nolan finally revived defense in Baltimore, his departure led to the destruction of our D for another few seasons. Keep Rex!

the ravens should restructure and revolutionize the coaching position a democratic system where the three cordinators offense defense and special teams they oversee thier respected field but when a decision needs to be made they decide in a majority rule fashion.... it could be our next thre headed monster Cam Ryan and Harbs

Dont think for a second the road is not already paved for that plan.

I'm half inclined to get let Cam call our defensive plays, too. I love Rex, but Cam's got about 25 iq points on him.

He's been a great coach for the most part, but it's never impossible to replace a guy like him with equal or even better talent. It would just take the new guy a little while to get the same rapport Rex has right now.

Rex is as good a general on the field because he listens to his troops, Ray or some one has an opinion he'll take it into consideration and change up the play to accomidate the players perceptions.

I agree, as long as Ray is in our defense, we'll be alright. Plus I love the idea of Ray being our DC when he retires. For some reason, I have always imagined Ray being our DC after he retires. Now I gotta say we gotta be fortunate, Rex has had opportunites to leave the team for head coaching jobs the past couple years and he thankfully has declined and stayed in Baltimore. Of course Rex will be considered for a head coaching job somewhere else this off season and I have a bad feeling Rex will finally take that head coaching job for 2009. But if he does leave, I'm sure Harbs will bring in the perfect DC for the job.

Here's what might work, if Rex gets a HC job.

First, he might not take one, given that there might be raises coming after this season across the board from the owner (I have a hunch). I know Rex wants to be a HC, but... And if he does, I just hope it's not in the AFC North.

If Rex does leave, and Marvin Lewis is available (he probably won't be, since I'll wager that the Bungles' owner keeps Marven until the end of his contract in two years, since he's all business). Then I say we ask Marvin back. I'm sure he'll want to prove something. ;-)

Otherwise, I agree, Ray would be fab at the D Coordinator job, or maybe Mike Singletary and Ray as the LB coach as has been stated. That would be dy-no-mite!

Who is the Ravens' assistant D coach, anyway?

Yeah - Pay him big bucks to leave his playbook, then turn the playbook over to Ray Lewis and make him our Defensive Coach! Works for me.

I think things will change a little, they might not be as dominating as they are under Rex. But then again they won't have to be. It's the dawn of a new era in Baltimore an era where the Ravens use the Offense to win games and the defense to keep them in it..
