Long term issues: Age and Cap

53 posts in this topic

They'll have to decide between restructuring a ton of deals or losing good players, because they'll have a lot of people demanding big contracts in the near future (8 pro bowlers last year). Next year half of their starting level WRs will be free agents as well as a starting safety, backup safety, starting kicker, backup QB, and five of their current corners. I don't know what their cap situation is, but they also have to think about the big name players they'll have to resign the following year, including Kaep, Crabtree, Aldon Smith, Mike Iupati, and Chris Culliver.

Yep. This makes this thread irrelevant!

We don't have it bad anymore lol. Carry on.

Plus our depth is crazy so some of these losses sting a little less

Since I hate their guts with an iron fist, enlighten me :P

Would guess that NaveSenrag is more informed than myself as well, but if I'm not mistakened they have several of upcoming free agents and guys who will need extensions by next year. Wouldn't know specifics though...

EDIT: Nevermind, he's already explained lol

2015 is going to kill them unless they let most of their free agents in 2014 walk and restructure some contracts.

This is the best list I could find of their free agents for the next two seasons.

Like everyone im looking forward to our Defense this year. However looking long term there are issues that while are far at the back of our minds right now will be quite apparant next season

Ngata will be 30
Suggs 32
Dumervil 30
Canty 32
Huff 31
Daryl Smith 32

Arthur Jones will be a UFA and is one of our younger players

On the offense

Bmac  will be 34
Jacoby 30
Rice 27 ( which for a running back is getting up there)
Leach 33 ( wont be an issue)
Oher will be an UFA

Next year might be defining as its the last season of flaccos cap friendly 2 years. The next year wont be so pretty.

Do we draft D again next year ?

Im kinda worried about our future.

Don't worry so much. Hasn't someone ever told you to take it a day at a time, or in this case even a year at a time? Just kidding....

A lot can change in the NFL over the course of a year... or two... or three. It's impossible to prognosticate that far ahead, too many moving variables.

I agree.  However, ESPN gave it a go with a group of football minds who only ever try and predict where a team will be five years from now.  According to them, we will have the 4th best team in the NFL in five years, and the best team in the AFC.  They base it on QB (age, ability), Age and Ability of the rest of the team, This year's draft, Coaching, and Front Office.  Take it for what it's worth, but maybe that will help some on here to feel a little better.

It we're out of contention ever it won't be more than a season.  Two at most.  We just draft that well, we'll always be thick with talent.

Didn't Daryl sign a 1 yr deal? And isn't Jacoby's contract up at the end of the season? And aren't Huff and Canty more like stop gaps? And since when was BMac supposed to be part of our long term plans?

Flacco's cap hit will go up but Suggs and Ngata's will go down. We'll be fine as long as we keep drafting well.

this is a key point not to gloss over. A very important part of how the star contracts are layed out so we don't take all the big hits at one time by hey are steadily dispersed. Ngata last yr, Suggs this yr, rice next tr, flacco the next. You have to look at the big picture to see how the team is set up to succeed every year for years to come.

For example you would get a lot more peaks and valleys in performance if you fail to draft any of your own stars and resort to signing a bunch of high priced free agents all in one year. You can't sustain this and will go through major upheaval even if you have success for one year.

Another key point. While we will lose a decent amount of our own players in free agency each year they are never the core of our team in their prime. For example, they core to our offense is flacco, rice, smith, yanda and pitta. These 5 will be protected with long term deals, pending pittas injury situation. Then you have the next group you hope to replace them which is ko and Gino. The rest of the spots are expendable players we keep or let go and and subtract depending on right player right price philosophy.

I will refrain from spelling out the defense because this post is getting long. The main point is you have to look at the big picture. Few seem to do.

Yeah, plus it's ridiculous to expect everyone to be re-signed every year when you're drafting 7-10 players each year. Only a few players make it to retirement, and when you have a team that drafts well, the rest of the roster losses are just taken by teams whose draft picks are out of the league.

Drafting well is the best way to build a roster because those are your "value" guys. They're the ones outplaying their contracts. Everyone else should be playing at value (theoretically), so the best teams are going to be the best drafters. They're also the teams who surprise people because their young players are developing under the radar instead of being replaced by new veterans.

Next year's offseason will be a breeze compared to what we are currently going through and age is the least of my concerns about this team. On paper, the D is fine. If you want to talk draft next year, all we really need is a WR, LT, TE (depends on PItta and Dickson), and ughh.. another WR. This years draft featured 4 defensive players in the first 4 picks. I wouldn't be surprised if that will be the same thing we do next year, except with offensive picks.

See that's not entirely accurate. Once again next year we are going to lose some good talent from this team which everyone will freak out about once again. And once again the oz will have to reload some positions.

They play one year at a time. we cannot know who will still be here next year and who will leave, due to trades, FA or retirement. Don't we fans have enough to worry about with this year without looking ahead into the future?

I really thought this was going to be a retrospective thread based on the title, because it's been the same story about the Ravens for years. There's always tons to be worried about, and I'm never worried. Best GM in the league, end of story. That'll keep us in shape.

Not worried, non issue. Players can get cut so easily in the nfl. Ozzie drafts well, retools, reloads etc, etc.

Can we please learn to live in the moment and enjoy this year? Let Ozzie, DeCosta and Moriarty who are paid a ton of money worry about this kind of stuff... that's their job really!

Although I see more needs on offense next draft, I still see them going "best player" and plugging in needs not filled in the draft by trades and signings. I still remember screaming about getting a running back in the fourth round last year... that worked out more than ok. Now I just gotta hope all the wide receivers on the board at that time don't become a star lol

The only problem we have as Ravens fans is deciding on a slogan("In DeCosta we trust" ain't doing it for me)

DeCosta is good like pasta.

We'll be fine for the next couple of years, at least. You want something negative? Think about where the 49ers will be at this time next year.

Yeah, and a lot of their top guys like Vernon Davis, Mike Iupati, Anthony Davis, Patrick Willis, Aldon Smith and Crabtree are pretty high picks.  Now that they're good, let's see how many studs they pick with picks 27-32 like we have to all the time when it's not as easy.

Just this year, Eric Reid at 18 seemed like a major reach.

AJ Jenkins may be one of the worst picks ever. When they picked him, I immediately asked "who?" That question still holds true.

Niner fans think he's the second coming of Jerry Rice.

More like Charles Rodgers

Considering their current receiving corps consists of injured players, scrubs, and Boldin, that really says a lot.

I really like the depth. When it's time for the older players to go or retire, I feel confident in the other guys stepping up. Plus, the front office will make some good free agent signings for cheap. This is a well managed team.
