Long term issues: Age and Cap

53 posts in this topic

Like everyone im looking forward to our Defense this year. However looking long term there are issues that while are far at the back of our minds right now will be quite apparant next season

Ngata will be 30

Suggs 32

Dumervil 30

Canty 32

Huff 31

Daryl Smith 32

Arthur Jones will be a UFA and is one of our younger players

On the offense

Bmac  will be 34

Jacoby 30

Rice 27 ( which for a running back is getting up there)

Leach 33 ( wont be an issue)

Oher will be an UFA

Next year might be defining as its the last season of flaccos cap friendly 2 years. The next year wont be so pretty.

Do we draft D again next year ?

Im kinda worried about our future.

Not worried.   Compare to other teams, our needs are very small.

In terms of drafting, I can't think of other spot than WR that really stands out as a major need.    Obviously grooming a LT is also a need too.  So there is that

If 30 is old, Arthur Jones is 27 & will be 28 by the time next season comes (Birthday in June).

Gee, I would've never guessed that you would have made this thread in a million years, not like it seems that you're kinda worried about everything or anything like that brah...... lol. All jokes aside, this is why we have Ozzie. He will help take care of this. In fact, I'm sure that he already has a plan laid out even for years from now. That's just how good this F.O. is. Calm down and enjoy the ride. Its going to be like a roller coaster, full of surprises, twists, turns, ups and downs.

30 isn't old but if the entire d lines best players are in their erly 30's then there should be a lil concern no?

We just drafted Brandon Williams. McPhee is young. We have two young playmaking safeties in Matt Elam and Omar Brown ( I think he will be our future FS). We also have young corners and

30 isnt really that old anyways. Dumervil and Suggs are in their primes and still have several years of good play left in them. we also have Upshaw and Simon there at OLB. We just drafted our stud ILB for the future and Bynes has potential to pair with Arthur Brown as nice tandem inside.

The only player I am concerned about is Ngata, because he has struggled to stay healthy, but overall I think the defense is in a good position for the next couple of years.

C'mon man! Lol
Darryl Smith is 5 years younger than Lewis, Huff is 4 years younger than Reed. Elam is 8 or 9 years younger than Pollard. Our core group of corners are young. We do have a few aging vets on the d-line but they still have a good 3 or 4 more years of football before father time hits them. We'll be fine

27 is old for a running back now? Jeez. They don't have any life span anymore. After this year, he might as well just retire! (sarcasm)

Basically i'll just sum this whole thread up with one phrase, In Oz We Trust. Nobody (besides us fans) thought we could replace our old players from last year, and we have in Smith/Brown and Huff/Elam. Do we have some aging players? Sure. But what team doesn't? They still have quite a few years left of playing time. And when they do get up there, we will replace them just like we've replaced countless players before. There's really no cause for worry.

And imo, we split next years draft between offense/defense. We need to draft a LT, WR, TE and possibly RT and a backup QB next year, and then maybe ILB and some more d-line depth. Obviously we may not draft at all those positions, depending how our cap will be, we may sign some guys and re-sign our own guys. But thats just positions of need i think.

Flacco's cap hit will go up but Suggs and Ngata's will go down. We'll be fine as long as we keep drafting well.

If they all retired at the end of this season, of course it would be an issue... but they won't.

Most of those guys should have another 3 years at least, and whilst they may be declining in talent, our young guys will be improving.

Trust in our scouting and coaching, by the time these guys retire, there will probably be elite guys you haven't yet heard of.

I don't see any issues, our cap management and good drafting is the reason we have such a stacked defense. You need to mix veterans in with the young players.

Can't we try to enjoy this year before worrying about next year? Seriously, since when has our front office not managed to "turn over" the roster without blowing up the team? 2002. Time to relax and have a little faith that they have a plan.

I would just like to enjoy this season without worrying about next. We have enough to worry about in life. Sports are supposed to be fun, not keep us awake nights worrying.

Well Ngata and Suggs contract situations have been discussed plenty on here, especially right after Flacco's deal.....

Perhaps Ngata works and extension out to lower his cap number, Ngata's age isn't that big of a factor to me, because Ngata could slide inside full time and be clogger in latter stages of his career.

Suggs is interesting, because I think he and dumervil may cancel each other, dumervil will have more cap friendly deal so Suggs would be in position to work out a deal or Dumervil replace him, then Upshaw and possible draft pick up slack...

We have young players in various positions some of veterans on list are gatekeepers for the next person.

The only person whose age we need to worry about is Ozzie.

I certainly hope he doesn't plan on retiring when he becomes eligible for social security :D

Well his predecessor has been learning under him for so long. We all know of Ozzie but how many of you know of DeCosta?

We have loads of young talent and will get the maximum compensatory picks next year. Let's try and enjoy being Ravens fans instead of stressing so much about it.

I have a ton of confidence in DeCosta. And wouldn't Ozzie be his predecessor instead of the other way around?

Who knows, maybe DeCosta has been the real genius the whole time, and Ozzie is just a mere decoy?

;)

I think we know too little about who is doing what to say Ozzie does it all of course. I'm sure he has the final say but its a team job as well. I think DeCosta will likely end up being just as good as Ozzie. The only problem we have as Ravens fans is deciding on a slogan("In DeCosta we trust" ain't doing it for me) for DeCosta once he takes over. He will do fine, trust me.

Guys look out. Ray Rice is 27 years old, he could start breaking down any day now. I mean he has had over 300 carries a whopping one time in his career so far. We'll need to draft another high round back to compliment Pierce by next year.

We'll be fine for the next couple of years, at least. You want something negative? Think about where the 49ers will be at this time next year.

A lot can change in the NFL over the course of a year... or two... or three. It's impossible to prognosticate that far ahead, too many moving variables.

Ain't that the truth.....even over the course of a day or two.

They'll have to decide between restructuring a ton of deals or losing good players, because they'll have a lot of people demanding big contracts in the near future (8 pro bowlers last year). Next year half of their starting level WRs will be free agents as well as a starting safety, backup safety, starting kicker, backup QB, and five of their current corners. I don't know what their cap situation is, but they also have to think about the big name players they'll have to resign the following year, including Kaep, Crabtree, Aldon Smith, Mike Iupati, and Chris Culliver.
