Ravens sign WR Brandon Stokley

Okay you guys are nuts. If a 37 year old journeyman who was never a great player even in his prime and is on his last legs is a good move I smell homerism. This is a move that won't do anything. It also shows how crap our wr core seems to be.

How is it a bad move? At this point in the year, if it's not a bad move, it's a good move, especially when there are so many questions at WR.

He's got solid hands and can run good routes.
I like it

....so does brandon Lloyd and he's also a better younger more athletic player

Won't be solved by stokley. Waste of time.

Don't you think we would have signed Lloyd if we thought he was the better player?  There's a reason you're not in the GM's chair.  I'm going to trust Ozzie a lot more than some random guy on the internet that hates everything the Ravens do.

I loved the daryl smith canty and dumervill signing and the draft. Also approved huff.

This though, no.

Again, Ozzie has a track record.  You have consistently been one of the most negative posters in your short time here.  Please tell me, if Lloyd is so much better, why is Stokley here and Lloyd still on the streets?

How does it hurt us though?  It's very low risk, potentially decent reward.

Stokely does exactly what none of our guys do. He gets open on the intermediate routes and catches the ball. Good fit.

It takes up a roster spot where there were already quite a few guys we'd like to keep the rights too.

Maybe we don't want to keep as many as you think. Might be time to cut ties with Reed, Streeter, etc..

Streeter is definitely in danger, but Harbaugh could catch David Reed with his wife and still wouldn't cut him.  That still leaves Torrey, Jacoby, Doss, Mellette, Williams, and Brown.  We have 9 guys playing for 6 spots, and we can't IR all of the other three.

Seriously, it's time to let these young guys play and see if we actually have anything of value.  They've been buried behind vets for so long, it's time to give them a shot.

He's reliable

You don't have to be a superstar to be good

I don't think they're that worried about it, to be honest.

Smith, Jones, Doss, and Thompson (pending injury) are guarantees.

They'll keep one of LaQuan/Reed for ST duties, with the other being cut.

Mellette still has work to do, most likely stashed this year.

Brown is in the same situation, most likely IR and maybe PS if they think they can get him there.

Streeter seems likely to be cut.

I think a Stokley signing would really just take the place of the #6 receiver that would be a weekly inactive anyways.  The Ravens find creative ways to keep those "weekly inactive" type of guys around without giving them a roster spot.

I think everyone's got it all wrong. They're really signing him to keep the streak of always having a 2000 Superbowl winner on the team alive.

You just can't fight some peoples' love affairs with Brandon Lloyd. I'm guessing Sami and company are big fans of his rap career as well.

Mixed feelings. Hope he could be a nice slot guy. Also could mean we don't feel good about our current group. Or he could just want to retire a raven. Idk lol

Except that Lloyd is a well known locker room cancer who's done nothing but burn bridges in his career everywhere he's went. Why do you think teams looking for wr's late like the Ravens and 49ers who have great GM's have went with guys like Stokley and Austin Collie over Lloyd? No one wants this guy in their locker room, if you can't get your act right under Belichick there's no hope of any other coach controlling you.

Stokley is nothing more then PROVEN depth in a sea of unproven wr's. The guy beat Corey graham 1 on 1 for a TD in the AFC Divisional game last year, pretty good value this late into the offseason considering anyone we've lined up in the slot has looked abysmal thus far. Not to mention his value as a mentor to these young wr's.

Also provides veteran presence. Peyton made him relevant last year, we'll see...

And by the way, he's a young 37. :p

So it legit hurts us then?  Whatever guy we cut for Stokley will have ended up doing less for us than him.

2012 stats (which surprised me)

45 REC - 554 YDS - 5 TD's

Of course it's a totally different situation now, but he had pretty good production for his age.

How doesn't it make sense? I'm just curious what you're thinking.

Thompson's hurt, and possibly inadequate. Doss and Jacoby also look fairly inadequate.

I just don't see this signing amounting to anything. Can't really say why, cause its just an opinion, but at 37 and being a small little dude, just don't like it.

I do think it's funny that all of the people clamoring just yesterday for a reliable slot receiver with good hands are the same ones that are dogging this move.

Stokley's taller then Wes Welker lol,  don't need to be 6'6 and run a 4.2 to be effective in the slot. Just need to run good routes, have reliable hands and not shy away from contact over the middle. Even at his "advanced" age Stokely fits that description better then most, if not all of our young wr's vying for that spot. We have a lot wr's who's skill sets better suit them on the outside, very thin at wr's with a slot skill set like Stokely has. Don't think it's a huge signing but it's better to have him in our wr core then to not have him given how things have looked so far at wr.

Im sorry guy's but can someone please tell me what you have against signing Brandon Lloyd? I mean honestly you make it seem like he's the worst on the market. Instead we go after a injury prone old receiver and you would rather him over a guy who just 2 years ago lead the league in receiving yards? And don't get me wrong I'am one of the biggest Ozzie supporters but lets be real, he doesn't have the best history when it comes to receivers. Go ahead and neg me but you gotta be real here.
