No More Custom Facemasks

29 posts in this topic

So, the NFL is only allowing players to wear the Bane-like mask if they have a medical reason to actually wear it?

Wow; this reminds me of when Paul Tagliabue's NFL forced Ricky Williams to ditch his custom-colored visors, since he didn't have a doctor's notice that said those visors helped him see, in any way. Talk about getting rid of creativity...

This is a bummer. I like seeing the cool face masks. :(

Would preventing neck injuries from face-mask pulling qualify as a "medical reason?"

You would think that with the new obsession over safety they'd be a little more open to something like this, but I guess not...

You mean, their enforcer.

Yes. They're his boss, though. They decide most everything that goes on in the league.

What a bunch of cranky old men. Except for Bisciotti, of course. He's the man.

All about the brand. I don't really understand the reason behind the normalizing of facemasks unless it's just about standardizing the uniform and what the players wear.

I also don't understand the supposed crackdown on some celebrations I thought were harmless. I say supposed because I saw them go un-flagged in the preseason.

I'm surprised they still have all the pink attire during October for Breast Cancer Awareness.

By now I thought they'd have it down to a pin/patch.

Those facemasks that Tuck, Canty, Sizzle and Ray wore last season seemed to make it safer as guys can't grab facemasks, particularly stiff-arming Runningbacks.

Agreed.  With a 16-barred cage, the gaps are too small for fingers to hook onto.

I personally don't understand the point in this outside of what berad said and even then it's a tad nonsensical. Why eliminate something that makes the game safer?. That's like telling Rodgers to not wear his special helmet.

The owners don't pay for these custom facemasks do they? That could be it if they do but I doubt it.

Marcellus Wiley said something about this being about the uniformity of the uniform....And if that's the case, it's still pretty lame. Very Lame.

In fact, pretty sure this is what's next: http://www.theonion.com/articles/roger-goodell-proposes-eliminating-ball-from-nfl,30732/

They should just make the safer facemasks the standard, then.

Here's another lame excuse on why they are banning custom face masks.

Blandino told guest host Mike Florio on theDan Patrick Show that players may be too likely to initiate head-first contact if they’re wearing supersized face masks.

“The helmet, as technology has gotten better and better, players feel more empowered to use their heads, and that’s part of what we’re trying to get out of the game,” Blandino said. “So I think we’re still looking at that issue, what is a standard face mask, what should be allowed.”

I am confused, shouldn't the fact that the Helmets getting better and safer through technology have helped the NFL toward their safety goal? Shouldn't they have helped reduced concussions and allowed players to use their helmet more if the helmets are being made safer?

To me, the NFL should have always focused on making the equipment safer. Put more padding in the helmet to lessen the blow of the hits, make the pads more firmer, something.

There are plenty of companies and universities looking into improving helmet technology, but if it was as simple as putting more padding in it would have been done already.  Some helmets offer better protection than others, but if I recall an article I read correctly the standard Riddell helmet is actually pretty bad.  I know some players have reduced their issues by switching helmets, Aaron Rodgers is one that comes to mind, and it's certainly something the league to look into.

That being said, fundamentally sound football does not involve the head.  That's why the NFL is starting these initiatives to get lower level coaches certified that they're teaching fundamental tackling correctly so these kids don't come into the league with horrible habits.  Perhaps that will help alleviate some of the problems with the upcoming generation of players.  They're trying to take the head out of the game because it isn't supposed to be part of the game, and that's how all of these dangerous injuries happen.

It's still a ridiculous excuse not to allow these faceguards.  They protect players from getting their eyes gouged out, and since fingers can't get into between them they prevent people being yanked by their facemask.  That protects players and reduces penalties, so Goodell is just being the no fun sour puss he usually is on this issue.

You shouldn't be hitting with the head at all, it can never be 100% safe with how fragile the brain is
