Bengals Hard Knocks - HBO

22 posts in this topic

The season of Hard Knocks begins tonight, Tuesday 8/6, at 10 PM EDT on HBO.

I always love the series and I'm looking forward to the storylines and seeing players like Burfict, Dalton, Green, and Atkins behind the scenes.

Anyone else tuning in?

How'd they get it again?

Because no other team is dumb (or impressive) enough to allow cameras to distract/hinder them from what they are trying to accomplish before the season starts... unless you're a team that seeks attention (READ: Cowboys and Jets).

The Bengals (and the Chiefs and Dolphins, I guess) just accept HBO's offer once no one else wants to be on Hard Knocks...

Both of these are true.

I think most NFL teams are reluctant to let camera crews get months worth of inside access into their facilities and meetings. Harbaugh, for example, would probably not even consider it. Too much 'private' stuff and paranoia that opposing teams may glean some edge. Also, your team can come out looking like (or being exposed as) a total mess i.e. Jets and Dolphins.

The big draw for the teams is that I believe they get compensated for it and the extra, hopefully good, publicity will hypothetically grow interest and the fanbase of the team.

Maybe they should do a Hardnocks: The Cheerleaders Edition. That would be AWE-SOME!!

That was a different time, before Hard Knocks became a "thing". In fact, the set-up is way more in-your-face, now. In 2001, seeing how it was the first season of Hard Knocks, the presentation was very calm; today, HBO tries to bring-out the drama and reality of every, single little incident. Stuff like that can take a toll on the players, coaches and the team, itself.

Why do you think the 49ers, Falcons, Redskins, Seahawks and Texans all publicly declined to be featured on the show, this year?

Because they don't need the publicity, unlike NYJ, MIA, CIN, etc.

They actually had this for both dallas and san diego. It was pretty un watchable. One of the girls trying out couldn't even name the cowboys qb for an ad spot.

I wish they'd put Hard Knocks on HBO Go so I didn't have to watch it live. It's one of the harder shows to track down if you miss the first airing.

I've heard that the reason lots of teams don't want to participate in Hard Knocks is because HBO requires that the teams allow them to film players being cut.  If teams refuse to allow HBO to film those moments, then HBO refuses to create a season around the team.

Frankly, as much as I'd like to see inside the Ravens training camp - I vastly prefer having a cohesive team that isn't at each others throats on a TV show.

Then you factor in the fact that the show captures coaches swearing at players. Teams just don't like the image it creates on their coaching staff.

Tonight (Tuesday, 8/12) at 10 PM EDT is the second episode of the 2013 edition of Hard Knocks.

It features the Bengals-Falcons scrimmages (Bengals went down there earlier to do some joint-team practices before their preseason game) and the actual preseason game itself.

Of the guys I remember them focusing on and noteables...

  • Giovani Bernard struggled running but turned in a goal-line TD.
  • Backup QB Josh Johnson put up 100 yds and 1 TD passing and 64 yds rushing - with a 43 yd scramble.
  • Tyler Eifert was shut out - the only catch he made was nullified by a penalty. He performed pretty well as a blocker.
  • Geno Atkins was dominant and turned in a TFL.
  • Overall defense was very stout, especially against the run - 8yds on 5 carries for Steven Jackson and no one rushed for more than 30.
  • Bengals won in a blowout, 34-10.
