Ragin'Raven

iPads and the NFL coach

12 posts in this topic

The Ravens are one of the teams that use an iPad playbook, etc. I also saw Jim Harbaugh talking about the iPad with his 49ers and that he can be anywhere watching game film, practice film, looking at the playbook, etc. Do you think this new technology could actually help lengthen the career of an NFL coach (head, coordinators, positions)? If they can watch film anywhere, they don't have to be in the office 18 hours a day. Workaholism might diminish because they can sit in their own living rooms and watch game film. I would think this would A) help balance between family and career because they can be home more and B ) help them from developing burnout too early.

Just was thinking about it. What do you think?

I wonder if the effect will be just the opposite.  Now, coaches won't be able to leave their work at the office.  They'll be constantly tempted to bury themselves in the iPad and work all hours of the day.  I think it is definitely a benefit in some ways, but separation of work life and home life is very important.

If Andy Reid discovers this then he'll never get up lol.

....Ok, that was mean. But I think it's better for the players rather the coaches. It should all stay on paper and projectors during work hours and using the iPad later is just sugar on top. But what do I know about coaching? Lol

lol as well as Rex Ryan.....

I think installing ipad system is great ideas like mentioned, but coaches need to interact with players more even with the new technology; relationship between coaches, personels, and players is must for team sport....

I wouldn't be surprised if that could help, there are so many options that open up beyond just mobility by using the iPad, I remember reading about for the plays they have actual clips of games embedded in the gameplan for the other team and clips from practice for what to work on extra.

I think it will help all around and anything to give the guys an edge and let them balance I'm all for :)

Edit: Here was the original article about the Ravens adopting the iPad for their playbook.

Agreed. That's how you really learn.

Won't make a difference

In Brian Billick's book he was writing about his time on Denny Green's staff.

I knew we all talk about game tape though nobody has used actual video tapes in a long time. Billick said the move from video tape to digital media saved hours every day as you can easily find segments you want and put them together.

It didn't mean shorter hours though, it just gets replaced by something else.

I think it is too much; virtual interaction is likely resulted deteriorated relationship among coaches, staffs, and players.  Players and coaches can access playbooks and films through ipads, but they must meet in persons to discuss about it....

I just thought it was an interesting topic. I like the responses it brought up too. I think there can be a compromise among the two places; home and work. Work to a certain time in the office, come home, play with your kids, work some more after they go to sleep. It keeps a balance, and that's why keeping connected to game film, etc. anywhere you are might help prolong some coaches' careers. Same amount of work, just perhaps easier to divide it up among different places. I don't know. It just interested me. :)

I know.  I thought the emoticon made it obvious that I was being sarcastic...  :control:

I like that play books are now on iPads. This should make it easier for the coaches to put the play books together and make such they aren't lost.

Edit: Just realized I wrote this from my iPad!
