NFL To Ban Ball Spinning?

It's a Carolina beat reporter, so take it with a grain of salt, but he says that the NFL is going to consider spinning the ball towards an opponent to be taunting. Opinions? Personally I don't think this will be an issue for us. The only person on the team who comes to mind as someone who might do this is Jacoby, but he doesn't catch the ball very often anyway.

Spinning it at an opponent is not really different than spiking it at an opponent. They should be treated the same.

I've never understood the need to celebrate anything other than a TD, INT, or sack anyway. Everything else is covered under "Doing your job".

The No Fun League looks to strike again. Steve Smith and Santana Moss are the only players I've seen consistently spin the ball after big first down catches or TDs over the years. Still, making it illegal is just sad.

Pierre Garcon does it obnoxiously often.

Taunting is the dumbest penalty in the NFL.

Thank you! We watch the NFL because not only do we love the sport, the teams, and the players, but we want to be entertained. I think the NFL is a better place when you have a few guys like Ochocinco and Steve Smith going through a three-act play after a TD. If I wanted nameless, faceless players catching a ball and going back to the sideline I'd watch college ball.

I read his post as taunting being the dumbest penalty to commit. Either way, I agree with you. Sports is about entertainment, so let us be entertained for Ray Lewis's sake...

Not good sportsmanship. The definition of taunting is the problem (i.e. excessive celebration penalty given the Packers in the Super Bowl. Not quite taunting, but it falls within the scope)

What will always take the cake in the category of "dumb" for the NFL is the $10,000 fine Frank Gore got for rocking his socks too low.
