Jonathan Ogden - First Baltimore Raven to be enshrined in Canton

42 posts in this topic

Folks: I have been watching NFL network over the past few days and they keep showing Warren Sapp's upcoming induction to the HOF. I haven't seen too much regarding our own Jonathan Ogden who in my opinion was one of the finest LTs in the history of the league. Moreover, he was the first Baltimore Raven drafted to be a Raven!

I just think he isn't getting the accolades he deserves or even the attention unfortunately. I think our BR.com staff should come up with a way to talk him up and introduce him to new Ravens fans. In any case I thought I'll post this topic so we as fans can pay tribute to the awesome Jonathan Ogden, the first Raven drafted! Please post your thoughts and show your appreciation for him.

Here is a nice article on him - http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1723792-jonathan-ogden-remembering-the-career-of-legendary-nfl-offensive-tackle

Great thread. Ogden wasn't just one of the finest LTs, he was one of the most dominant players in NFL history. I remember interviews with guys like Strahan that hated going against him because they just weren't used to being toyed with as grown men. I also loved how he wouldn't just block the way McKinnie does, but instead would take the punishment to the defense. He had so much savvy with his moves that he would wear guys down over the course of a game. Only LT you'll ever watch who's game tape is actually entertaining. Amazing player, amazing guy.

First Raven draft pick, first raven to to to Canton. Second Raven draft pick will be the second Raven going to Canton. So far batting a thousand, but that is a streak that wont continue after Lewis LOL.

To measure the importance of a player, just look at how long it takes to replace them once they're gone.  How many LTs have tried and failed to fill his (enormous) shoes?  We still don't really have a replacement, just a couple band-aids.  He was awesome.  Too bad he was somewhat wasted on ho-hum QBs.

Hands down people say we should have drafled Lawrence Phelps but this was our guy.  I'm glad Ozzie made the decision he did to have a Token Left Tackle that others in College and Highschool signing up to play Offensive line study JO films...  He makes us look good then and makes us look good now.  II'm suprised Ozzie has not convinced JO to be Offensive consultant to Jim Caldwell..

Are they going to retire his and ray's numbers.

I think I heard something about Ray's number being retired this season when Houston comes to town...anyone have a better memory than me?

Sapp to me was maybe a borderline HOF'er...idk, i thought he was overrated...anyway Sapp probably ran his mouth nonstop until NFL Network finally relented to play every single highlight he ever had...the guys obnoxious and annoying

Ray is getting put into the Ring of Honor during the texans game. I dont recall them saying they're retiring his number though.

I heard on the radio today that when J.O. was a rookie, some people thought he could've been an all star PF in the NBA.

...crazy!

Is he the greatest Raven ever? Purely Skill set wise at the position he's played at. Apparently Mike Preston thinks so.....I can't remember appreciating him in his prime though -- didn't know as much about football back then.

I would still say Ray.

When you have more sacks than anyone else who ever played your position, you'll find yourself in the HOF easy.

I had the pleasure of meeting Jon at camp when he played. You don't realize how big he truly is until you meet him. We shook hands and his hand swallowed mine like mine did when holding my 8 year old son's hand. Truly a mountain of a man!

Youngest man to go in the hall

Youngest this year?  That's cool, but it means we were unfortunate enough to see him be forced to leave the game too early.  He had a handful of Pro Bowls left in him.  I'm sure Joe, John and (little) Ray would have enjoyed that.

All bias aside; Sapp was a dominant player that played the undertackle 3-technique to perfection and was a dominant force for 5/6 seasons. You don't win a defensive player of the year award as a DT, make two All Decade Teams, become a 6 time All Pro (4 1st Teams), and have four 10+ sack seasons (including a 16.5 sack season) if you aren't a HOF player.

Throw in his role on a championship team with an all time great defense and you can see why he was a 1st Ballot HOF player.

Really? If that is true it is so very cool. After all he was the Baltimore Ravens first born child!

He is not the youngest ever.  Gale Sayers has that honor by a ways, still.

This is going to be a very awesome night indeed. Too bad we didn't get the HOF game but I expect we will get that when Ray goes in.

Also, JO Hall of Fame t-shirts are selling fast. I checked both NFL Shop and the Ravens store and they only have Medium and Large sizes left. If you want one, better hurry fast.

If those shirts came in any color other than black I would have bought one. If I buy any more black shirts people will think I've gone Goth.

You can check the Pro Football Hall of Fame Website store as well but both shirts they have are black.

NFL network is broadcasting live from Canton and I'm seeing a decent amount of purple in the crowd. Proud of our fans for showing up.
