@RavensInsider: Jermichael Finley in ICU after neck injury: Tight end has neck injury http://t.co/z61Xw6QSdO @footballpost #NFL

Sadly, I think all Packer fans (secretly) cheered when they saw Finley go down with a neck injury.

Speaking of injuries, Jay Cutler's injury is a torn groin muscle and he is expected to miss at least 4 weeks. That is relevant to the Ravens as they will play the Bears in exactly 27 days, which is in that timetable of weeks Cutler's expected to miss.

No way. That was an awful looking hit he took

That's not something you like to see. Usually football players are in and out of the hospital, this must be a bad injury.

I'm not sure if it was JO or Berad who said the NFL should suspend Meriweather, but they got their wish:

NFL suspended Redskins SS Brandon Meriweather two games for illegal hits.

One of the dirtiest players in football -- and not a very good safety, at that -- Meriweather has racked up seemingly countless fines over the years for violating on-field policy. The NFL had enough when Meriweather drew two more penalties for personal fouls in Week 7 against the Bears. Meriweather is eligible to return in Week 10. The Skins are extremely thin at safety again with Reed Doughty nursing a concussion and Phillip Thomas out for the year.

Yessssss. Merriweather is a thug. Total trash.

I wanted him suspended a few weeks ago when he had a couple headshots against the packers. Hitting people in the head is basically all he has as a player

Tune in @ the 50 second mark. Shortly thereafter you'll see #19 (Brandon Merriweather), with the infamous "stomp"

Not necessarily.  Suh was not a dirty player in college.  Of course it was hard for him to get frustrated since he was arguably the most dominate individual defensive player in NCAA history.  If you ignore the dirty stuff he's been a good player, but compared to how good he was in college his career has been a major disappointment.

I'm really sorry to rain on your parade, but the NFL REDUCED his suspension down to one game from two games.

Just saw this. Joke status!

At least he's got one game. This also starts the ball rolling for more serious suspensions down the line. Still, he's a headhunter. There are games and games over years!

I never wish injury on anyone but tell me this wasn't karma or deserved. He'll either change his ways, get suspended out of the league, or get trampled by opposing players. He's got a target on his back now. I'll get off my soapbox now, too.

Probably the most disgusting news of the entire season.

Was pretty embarrassing to hear that they were appealing. Only sense I can make of it is the fact that this is a first suspension. Still pretty awful that they would do that. He popped 2 guys right in the head in the very same game. Nevermind the previous infractions and knocking himself out.

Ted Cottrell is starting to get on my nerves. He's not using his brain at all and we saw it last year w/the Ed Reed suspension then reduced to fine

Manning misses practice for "ankle" injury.. that Broncos
SaId happened vs Jaxsonsonville. I call BS on this one. He obviously hurt his shoulder or arm vs Colts, after Mathis hit he was throwing high school passes. Most of his passes after that were floating 20 yard jump ball ducks with no zip. He wasnt coming out of that game to prove Irsay right. Plus he never limped and moved without favoring his ankle. His passes were awful. All jump balls. Havent seen that all season. Plus, he wont answer questions about it now.

My good buddy "beeeee-rad" might disagree, but I thought this quote from Richard Sherman was really spot on.

"The players who make hard hits are not the problem, Sherman said, “the NFL is the problem.” Unlike the thousands of former NFLers who have sued the league, accusing it of hiding the dangers of head injuries, today’s players are quite aware of the short- and long-term effects of concussions."

Even though I really disagree w/Brandon Merriweather

Whole article is here: http://blog.seattlepi.com/football/2013/10/23/richard-sherman-on-concussions-the-nfl-is-the-problem/

That's all well and good but don't turn around and sue/blame the NFL (sometimes fraudulently*) when you have neurological damage, commit crimes, or kill yourself. A littany of former players - some quite RECENTLY "former" - have done exactly that. That's the real reason behind the NFL doing this, to cover themselves, stop the money flow, and stop the negative press.

The NFL would love for these guys to beat on each other like they have for decades. In fact, they loved it so much they hid some of the repercussions that head trauma in football could have. They would go back to that in a heartbeat - and stop annoying both current players and fans - except for the lawsuits and some public outcry.

So... to combat that, the NFL runs down restrictive rules about hits to the head/neck and defenseless players, dumps money into concussion research, and starts programs like "Heads Up" to give themselves some good PR, have some ammo against lawsuits, and stop any future ones. The owners agreed to all of this because even though they bought off former players for $765M, they don't want to do it again.

The NFL took a hardline stance on it so they wouldn't have to shell out more money. They did this because former players sued them. If you want to blame someone, look no further than the former guys who were looking for a payday (which a settlement is). The NFL is protecting it's pockets by confronting the issue.

Just so we're on the same page - former players suing the league for hiding what they knew about the topic vs players simply suing the league. It has been my understanding all along that the league is under siege, and responded with the settlement because of what they knew about head trauma, but chose to keep that information under wraps.

There is in fact a protocol in place for current athletes now. The spirit of Sherman's argument is for those who have some morsel of integrity and some understanding of some kind of code, they will play the game and be held accountable for their decisions. With this new protocol, I would venture to say that the league has significantly more leverage in the next wave of lawsuits. If you're guilty or liable for something then we are coming to get our comp. But people generally don't sue you for not doing anything wrong.

Yes - we need the league to legislate out certain types of behavior, but you can only do so much to dial down a violent game. Imagine this flawed approach for Rugby? or Boxing? or the local favorite Lacrosse?

The settlement was a huge victory for the league. Just pay your problems away for the biggest black eye they had seen in quite some time. The players and their representation jumped at the cash.

How many of those other sport athletes turned around and sued the leagues or federations that employed them?

LT volmer breaks leg for Patriots. Huge loss.

Vollmer is the RT, Solder is the LT.  But yes, this is a major loss.  Vollmer is one of the top RTs in the league, at least in terms of pass protection, and Brady really doesn't like not having a clean pocket and all day to throw.  This hurts NE's strength, although I will point out that Vollmer has missed a few games here and there.

Seahawks WR Sidney Rice is out for the season with a torn ACL.

https://twitter.com/AdamSchefter/status/395305857186926592

Ohhh no! Poor guy. Another injury for him. That's just unfortunate. Wonder if they have any regret for not making a trade for one of the WRs.

I probably would have gone for Hakeem Nicks or Greg Little. Nicks will not have any leverage to command big bucks after the season he's been having

Vikings fleeced the Seahawks. I always thought they got ripped off and still do. Way too expensive for an injury prone player.

If Percy Harvin gets injured at any point this season (once he comes back), Vikings are going to be laughing all the way to the bank.

You could be talking about about Rice and/or Harvin here. Both injury prone and expensive.

Yeah, true. I was referring to the Harvin trade because now they lost Rice who is seemingly always hurt and the guy they traded for is also always hurt and both guys were Vikings.
