How To Beat The Steelers D

19 posts in this topic

Ok does anyone remember several seasons back when the Steelers D was just as good in the front 7 as they are now but still go beat badly? Team did it by attacking their secondary. Now I know people are saying they are better but any secondary would put up those numbers with the pass rush the Steelers are getting. My point is their strength is in their linebackers so you take away their strenght by going 4 and 5 wide receivers. Now they have a choice. They can leave their linebackers on the field and blitz, leaving receivers wide open, cover, what wide receiver can't beat a linebacker, or take them off the field entirely. I haven't been following their games very closely. Has any team tried this already? I don't think we even have 4 or 5 good receivers for us to try it but I'm surprised other teams haven't. Maybe Dallas will.

Well if you line up with 4-5 receivers then they will adjust and come out with only 1 or 2 blitzing linebackers and 6 defensive backs to cover the receivers.

Thats what the Colts did. The used D. Clark as their 4th WR and were able to move the ball very well against Pittsburg

I'd like to see some double TE formations. Have Heap and Wilcox running some short slants for the quick pass, Mason running his routes, and Clayton streaking.

If they blitz, dump it off to a RB or TE... if not Joe will have time to search the field for the open man, especially the way our line has been protecting him. Joe has been handling the football well and is really learning on when to get rid of the ball, or run out of the pocket.

Even if we don't send Wilcox and Heap out, it should be enough to make them reconsider blitzing so much.

I agree with this if we can pick up the blitz fast enough..Ray Rice would make them pay on the swing/screen passes. Polamalu would have to be a spy in that scheme.

True, they would probably move Harrison and/or Woodley to DE and they still get to rush but then the draw play becomes very effective with McClain running past those guys who are overpursuing for the sack and running over the DB's.

Yeah, why haven't we done that? You can make them both block, both got out for a pass or one blocks and one goes for a catch.

The worst thing about James Harrison is that he was on the Ravens' training camp a few years ago and was released. Aieeee!!!

Like every tackle in the league, Gaither and Terry struggled in the 2nd half vs. Harrison and Woodley. They obliterated Matt Cassel.

Draws are good on spread plays, but I would also use the Jumbo package and unbalanced line. Put Gaither, Anderson, and Neal with McClain following running off tackle left at Harrison. Even if they stack it up for little gain, we gotta find a way to get some hats on that dude and stay on the field with dink and dunk. Short drops, quick releases vs. that kind of pressure. We can't be gettin' fancy or it's more of the sack/strip stuff that just kills you.

Ya but the ravens D-line is meant to plug holes for the running game and not as much get to the QB unless we blitz, probably why he was released i think, anyone agree?

I would like to see us run the no-huddle a few times against the Steelers defense. Maybe spread them out in the no huddle and get some quick passes and screens to offset the blitz. This will help screw up their sub packages.

He was released because he was one of the biggest head cases ever in camp. He could not get along with the other players. They hated his guts. This was stated by two Ravens last year.

Ah, I always wondered what it was. I follow the team closely but never remember hearing his name as a Raven.

Too bad, they must've misunderstood his passion for the game as being a jerk or something. I don't believe he's had any personality problems
with the Steelers, and you have to admit he's a beast. Not even that big, but he plays like he's 6'8 295, just throwing tackles around with the bull rush. I wonder about guys like him and Bob Sanders, who play way above their size. Is it even possible to be that strong without roids?

No.

Seeing as how the Ravens are full of undersized players, I'd have to think yes. Ray was considered to small to be taken as high in the draft as he was.
