Favorite regular season Ravens play in the Harbaugh/Flacco Era

57 posts in this topic

For the time being, my favorite, or one of my favorites, was Haloti blowin up R. Mendenhall with none other than the best announcers for a Ravens/Steelers game Phil Simms and Jim Nantz in the background...(if Greg Gumbel and Dan Dierdorf happened to be calling that game on that day, they'd be the best announcers for a Ravens/Steelers game :D ...can never make up my mind which duo I prefer more). It's just so telling of the gamewrecker and nightmare that is Haloti

  1. Despite the guard (Doug Legursky I think) missing the block, Haloti still read the play and knew where he needed to be
  2. Opening day
  3. Opening day vs the rival
  4. Kicking the rival's butt on opening day, no better way to get excited for the season to come

Mason getting sandwiched vs Detroit (2009) and then taking off for the TD. That was a pretty good one.

I was about to post that one earlier

4th and 29 has to be my favorite.

Honorable mentions:

-Lewis blowing up Sproles

-Flacco to Houshmanzadeh to beat the Steelers (2010).

-The two TD runs to close out Texas Stadium

-Troy Smith completion to Flacco vs OAK in his rookie year

-Webb pick 6 vs Jets

4th and short vs. San Diego, Lewis blows up Sproles.  Best.  Play.  Ever.

4th and 29.

These 2 (funny how both were in SD) + the TD to Torrey vs PIT

4th and 29 is the most popular because its freshest in everyone's mind but i will go with Ray on 4th and short because it was like a lot of his plays when he(and I) were younger. It was vintage Ray and reminded me of his earlier dominance as well as it being a testament to his longevity. Ray with the clutch defensive stop, again. I want to list others but ones from before this era keep clouding my mind.

LOL, that is exactly the play that came to my mind first when I first read the title of this thread!

When asked about the play after the game '...there's only so many plays that can be run out of that formation...'

Odd how when last year people were calling Peyton Manning a Macbook nobody ever bothered to suggest that about Ray...until Frank Caliendo did his Jon Gruden impersonation referencing Ray Lewis.

'Ray Lewis this guy can tackle you with his mind...'

Two of the best quotes ever

3rd most memorable quote for me - Wade Phillips after the game '...I've never seen 2 80 yard runs back to back in the same football game...'

4th and 29.

These. I was at the first one when lewis made the tackle and actually got to shake his hand afterwards outside of the stadium.  I would of been at the 4th and 29 but i was stationed in San Diego anymore, was so mad that i missed that.

Also, theres a Ray Rice play and i think it was against the bengals, he also did it against the steelers.  Where he gets tackled and almost brough down but puts his hand down...hard to explain, ill look for the link

also the 80 yard run against the pats in the playoff game where we destroyed them, that game was awesome

rice running over Troy P, i think it was a playoff game

Joe to Torrey vs PIT. That entire drive was great  and The Flacco fling will go down as one of the most famous plays in the history of the NFL.

Defense wise.

That Ngata hit on Sanchez when the D dominated him. Things went downhill for him after that (Sanchez). Ngata breaks Ben's Nose is also a great one. Ngata vs Mendenhall is another great one. Ngata Pick six on Sanchez. Ngata forces a fumble vs the Bears.

Ray Lewis hit on Sproles.

Paul Kruger INT vs Pit is up there too.

To echo the sentiment of some others, the walk off tackle in SD from Ray Lewis is my favorite. To me, I think it's a 3-horse race between the 4 and 29 Rice play, the 4th and Game Lewis play, and the Mile High Miracle. Those are things that just don't happen in the course of a game.

What separates the Lewis play is that it happened on defense. Defense is built on your ability to react whereas offense is...offensive. To put it another way, for the offensive plays to happen someone has to make a mistake and you have to catch breaks. On the Mile High Miracle you have a fundamental breakdown in the defense. For the 4th and 29 you had to depend on A) The blindside block from Anquan Boldin on Eric Weddle which wasn't called and B) A healthy spot. Conversely, on the 4th and Game, nobody made a mistake. There were no breakdowns. One man imposed his will.

Lewis had to transcend the game to make that play. He had to understand the situation, the formation, and the timing of the playcall. On top of all that he had to have the athletic ability and the awareness to actually make the play. That play was his most amazing to me because it took everything amazing about Ray Lewis and put it on display. Leadership, resilience, straight up football genius, and freakish athleticism all in one.

Pittsburgh and Denver... Favorite play: Joe Flacco first rushing TD

I thought his first rushing TD was opening day vs Cincy 2008 to the tune of 39 yds

Offense - Flacco to Q. Texans 2010. Probably the sickest over the shoulder throw, under pressure I have seen. Joe rolls away from the blitz and delivers a beautiful deep strike to Boldin as he gets land based. See details.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OxziMo8CmP4 @1:30 mark.

Defense - Eagles game. Reed with an NFL record 108yard int, taking INT to the house from his own endzone  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4Bmjh7mXvU

Honorable mention

D- Ray blows up the San Diego 4th down. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQ6H9o0lpvA

One of my favorite plays was in Joes rookie year ? it was a game against the Bengals, I believe it was the first game of the year at home...Joe ran for a TD in that game and threw for one I think..but my favorite play of the game was when Joe lined up at WR and caught like a 35-40 yard pass down the sideline...my jaw dropped and i knew we had something special in this Flacco guy

I know it says during the Harbaugh/Flacco era, but the McNair to Heap touchdown to beat San Diego was pretty awesome. Speaking of that, was that the last time the Chargers came to Baltimore?!?! We are forever playing them in San Diego.

I don't mind, I've been able to be at a Ravens game for both Ray Lewis's Walkoff 4th Down Tackle and 4th and 29 because they keep coming out here to CA :P
