i dont know many tight ends not named witten and gonzalez in their early 30's that can either get seperation OR make seperation not matter..great players..kinda like boldin..when they are covered they are open.

We needed a WR is this TE our guy, I hope so.  Ozzie needs to shop around and get us a good parallel player to Torrie Smith.  Boldin was a perfect fit here and I don't know why we parted ways with him...

We parted ways with him so we could replace Ray, Ed, Bernard, Paul and Danelle.  5 for 1.

Agree with others as it being a good signing. All videos show a decent te and heard he was an ok blocker (no video of that thou). with a full off season, we should see more 2 te sets & spread formats I think (long as our line allows it)

No he is no where near the type of receiving threat to be considered a primary receiver. He is a solid vet back up. Dickson will take over as the number one receiving tight end. We don't need boldin who was a big disappointment in his time here. It is time for flacco to turn some of these young guys in to stars. Guys like Brady Brees and Eli have turned unknowns into stars. I rank flacco in this category. It is not something most are used to in Baltimore but when you have that type of qb they get thd most out of the strengths of the receivers they have.

Ravens Nation has decreed Flacco in the same category as you bro. Its time we see it on the field.  But did you say Boldin was a big disappointment?

Dickson is not as sure handed as Pitta and I think everyone would prefer Dennis over Ed, but I am sure Joe will manage. Visanthe seems to me like a backup and I wouldn't expect him to be on the field too often, if at all.

Instead I can see Flacco building up whoever wins out the #2 WR competition.

Like this point of view.

Flacco building up receivers, not receivers bailing him out.

I have faith in Joe..

Will the real Joe Flacco stand up this year and make stars out of a couple of unheard WRs and TEs please?

I believe Joe Flacco will answer his calling and make this roster a well oiled passing machine!

Shiancoe was a prominent player when there was good QB play in Minn. He was a scoring machine...until Ponder showed up. He went to NE and was buried beneath Gronk and "Its Murdaaaa". I believe he can produce still and now he gets his chance to prove it!!!

Just read Harbs comments on Shiancoe:

"He blew away his conditioning test and blew away his workout," Harbaugh said. "He really looks good."

He was handcuffed in previous seasons...

I blame Visanthe. I think he planned this. He wanted on the team and found a way to get a job. Clever, Shiancoe. Clever.

Hahaha, if we start believing that, then we should believe that Flacco broke Boller's shoulder and gave Troy Smith pneumonia a few years back :lol3:

I dont  think Boldin was a  big disappointment for the ravens  and honestly  he was greatly limted here by Cam until Caldwell became offensive coordinator but it just sucks that it happen later on in season because he would had definately had atleast 1,000  receiving yards with 8 touchdowns under caldwell. The ravens passing game was predictable with cam as the offensive coordinator and Boldin wasnt used creativiely or to his strength consistently like he should under cam; Its not Boldin fault at all that  he wasnt able to put up stellar stats like he did as a cardinal  but some ravens  fans believe it is.

Boldin strength was in the slot and  overall working the middle of the field but in cam offense he wasnt asked to do that often  which in most cases lead to him  being used as if he was a receiver with speed( consistently being used on deep routes). Overall what im say is how can anyone knock Boldin for being a disappointment as if  wasnt being limited by his own oc for the time he was here.

Shiancoe and Joe are putting some extra work in today.  This is good, he's a big man and can be an asset in the red zone.  If he can net us 500-600 yards this is a good pick up.

I would say you are both wrong. Boldin wasn't a disappointment and he wasn't overly misused. He played a lot in the slot on 3WR sets with Jacoby running go routes outside with Torrey. His regular season stats can be attributed to Flacco's inaccuracy combined with lack of time to throw and yes sometimes just Boldin not getting open no matter where he was on the field. He helped us win a Superbowl, that was enough for me. Nothing disappointing about the Lombardi Trophy being in Baltimore.

That's a pretty high goal for him.  I think he'll be good, but let's try and not be too unrealistic.  Pitta only had 600+ yards for us last season.  Shiancoe will not be nearly the number one-type target he was.  He might get us a handful of TDs, though, which would be really nice.

Shiancoe would be lucky to get half of that. IT's more about what he brings in the endzone and how well he blocks so Dickson can focus on getting down field and stretching the field.

Told you so!  :banana1:  I'm excited about the Silver Spring son's return.  He averages a very respectable 11.02 ypr.

Correct.  I agree that's why he was brought in.  I wouldn't be too surprised if he didn't really have an impact this year, though I'm hoping for the best.  The best is about 20 catches and 4-7 TDs.

I think he opens up two TE sets again for us and will definitely be a red zone target at his size.  I think he'll get at least 500.  Apparently he was injured last year, but before that he was putting up those sorts of numbers.  Shiancoe put up 566 yards with 11 TDs during the good Favre year, went for 530 in the bad Favre year, but his career yardage year was with 596 and 7 TDs with Gus freaking Frerotte.  I see him playing that Pitta like safety valve role, which he has been successful at in the past.  I really think he'll be a solid contributor for us.

Ed Dickson only put up 21 catches for 225 and 0 TDs last year, so let's not act like he's a surefire thing to step up.  While it's true he did put up 54 receptions for 528 yards and 5 TDs the year before, he has not been consistent enough for us to know just what we're going to get.  Unless he really steps up, Shiancoe and him could be splitting snaps.

He was not part of a two TE squad when he put numbers like that up.  He was also several years younger.  He will not get close to 500 yards, but that's okay.  We don't need or expect him to.  He is our number 2 TE, assuming he stays ahead of Bajema and Furstenburg, and he will be an asset in the blocking game.

Even with an injured, under-performing Dickson last season, which we should neither expect or hope for, Pitta still was in the 600 yard range.  Pitta is much younger than Shiancoe, and I believe better.  He was certainly had much better chemistry with and trust from Joe than we can expect VS to have this year.  To expect VS to get anywhere close to Pitta's production last season is unreasonable.  You are setting yourself up for disappointment.  I expect VS to be an asset to our team, but I cannot expect him to come in and simply replace Pitta's numbers by himself.
