Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger's sack percentages

15 posts in this topic

2007-10.4%

2008-8.9%

2009-9.0%

2010-7.6%

2011-7.2%

2012-6.3%

Notice the nearly constant downward trend of those numbers. Also notice how the number dropped markedly in 2010 when Maurkice Pouncey was drafted, and again in 2012 when Todd Haley became the offensive coordinator. Don't be surprised if Roethlisberger's sack percentage is somewhere around 5% this season,

That's fantastic.

Seriously though, I look forward to meeting Ben this year with a healthy Suggs & Ngata, and the addition of Dumervil.  Ben might be seeing a downward trend, but I think we'll attack him more than last year.

Notice how the more games he missed... the sack numbers went down...

Serioulsly though, explain the stats a little better..

I added up some numbers - couldn't find any career splits that included sacks - and Roethlisberger has a 9.54 sack percentage against the Ravens. A stat bolstered by a 14-sack year in 2006.

I think Roethlisberger invites contact with the way he plays but he is also one of the best at avoiding it or powering through it. The Steelers have definitely made protecting him a priority, though, just look at their drafts in recent history.

Just curious though, how do those numbers get influenced by the games he missed due to injury?

Sack percentage is just

sacks / (sacks + attempts)

Also over the last four years, Ben's Average yard per completion decreased.

So he got better at dumping off the ball in Haley's system.  Skewing stats to meet your needs is fun.

I pointed that out myself......how am I skewing stats, those are the stats

there are many reasons it has gone down...one being haley...one being Pouncey....which I stated in my post

also berad is correct that is how you calculate sack percentage....so games missed isn't a factor

Roethlisberger's sack percentage might actually be lower if they included drop backs that he turned into runs (from pressure) but that'd be another level of statistics.

Big Ben is just a tough guy to bring down. What I want to know is. Are the QB hit numbers also down, or is he just better in getting rid of the ball, while being sacked?

The older he gets, the more damaging the sacks against him become.  As was evidenced perfectly last season.

he still ranks somewhere near the 2nd highest sacked QB in the past 3 years or something behind Aaron Rodgers...the OL will dictate how his numbers look

Don't wanna make this off topic, but now I'm curious about what Flacco's % is.

Don't have it by year, I'll keep looking, but over his career it is

6.53%

Over his career, Big Ben's is 8.38%.
