What base offensive lineup would you like to see?

17 posts in this topic

so the ravens have alot of things on offense, we have speed, good hands, good routes, toughness, hardnosed ball carriers, and alot of our guys have a good combination of those things. with 5 lineman and a qb, that leaves 5 guys at the skill positions, what kind of base lineup do you wanna see with those 5?

I personally want to see a 3wr base, with torrey, and deonte thompson on the outs, and pitta playing more of a slot receiver than a TE, thats basically what he does anyway. then after that, the possibilities are endless. our "base" lineup could be based solely off of wr's, while interchanging everything else, you could have any combination of 2 of the following: ray rice to run, catch, block, or anything else, BP to run or catch, dickson at TE to block or catch, doss at slot, juice at fb to lead block, catch, or pass block, or juice at te or slot for whatever you need, not to mention jacoby, and maybe even streeter and reed for special occasions. but with the speed of torrey and dt, and the threat of the first down with pitta, the possibilities are endless with a guy like jim caldwell running HIS OWN playbook and all these different types of players at his disposal. our versatility will make us dangerous, and lets say none of our receivers are really standing out, but maybe just doing a solid job, we could even have a constant rotation going and using them for whatever the job calls for. cant wait til denver baby!

Seriously though, I have always loved the singleback 4 WR formation. That allows Rice to have room to operate as both a receiver and a runner, allows Flacco to get rid of the ball quickly, and allows Torrey/Thompson or Jones/Doss/Pitta to be on the field. Torrey and Thompson or Jacoby would tear off the top of the D, allowing space for Pitta and Doss to operate underneath, and open up room for Rice to either get the ball on a draw or work as a receiver.

I just hope we use a lot of 2 TE sets this year and continue to run the ball a good amount of time.

Even though its now Joe's offense we still have one of the best RB's in the league plus a great backup. We also might get the best FB back as well.

I want something like last years offense besides not being predictable or conservative. Not expecting our offense to look like it did in the playoffs, but definitely not what it looked like before Caldwell took over. Lets just be efficient alright lol

I'd like something like this

Smith                  McKinnie Osemele Grad Yanda Oher              Pitta

                                                                                        Juice

                                   Rice     Flacco     Pierce

Gives a lot of possibilities with H back fullback, switch with dickson, send pitta slot/wide, 2 back, 1 back with rice catching bubble screens, torrey runs deep the rest attacks middle and crossing patterns type of west coast

One thing that I think is an underrated advantage to a competent double TE offense is that every huddle or every base formation looks the same from a defensive coordinator sub package mindset. I think this is what we can do and what the Patriots have done well. Its hard to scheme players on defense when every offensive personnel package consists of 2 WRs, and 2 TEs (I think Juice is the best part as he fits that TE spot or can be in the backfield allowing for even more possibilities of formations with just one grouping of players) just because they all look the same, yet the formations that can come from that personnel group are endless and are flexible from power run to spread. I guess this is my favourite 'base lineup' as you just allow the QB to shift to what he sees. If you have 6 DBs out there just run it, if they begin keeping the LBs in look for the mismatches. Boring, and simple but hard to defend as we have seen for many years.

Id like to see 12 personnel as our base. Pitta as one TE with Juice or Dickson as the second. I also like the idea of having Pitta, Dickson, and Juice on the field together with Torrey and Rice. I think that can be a devastating formation that can either run or spread it out depending on how the defense decides to defend it.

Two TE sets where both are receiving options, however they want to line them up is fine....I'm sure Caldwell will use more 3 and even 4 WR sets...doesn't mean we won't run the ball because I still think we will be balanced, Joe may not even throw it around more but his number could improve because we aren't as predictable now...Cam got stale and stuck to the same 3 or 4 plays every game, every week...the OC change will be good as we saw in the playoffs

Torrey            McKinnie  Osemele  Gradkowski  Yanda  Oher    Dickson

                                                                                    Juice

                                  Leach                             Rice

                                                     Flacco

1WR

1TE

1HB

1FB

1RB

You have to account for the deep ball AND there are several dangerous (Rice) short-yardage weapons. With 2 possible FB's, defenders can't be sure which one to follow in the run game. Plus there's plenty of size on the O-line. Great for play-action, great for short yardage.

Unique, I like it. Pretty creative with 3 backs with Flacco.

I wanna see Juice take some snaps at Tight End. Can you imagine Leach paving the way for Pierce in the Red Zone and Juice is the blocking TE?

Juice isn't that good at blocking yet. He is just tough and willing to block. Also he is undersized at TE we have to remember that. But you and Hawkprey are onto something with Juice as an H-Back and Leach at FB. He picks up the first block on a toss while leach gets the second and escorts Ray or Pierce in.

The standard, boring, 2WR, 1TE, 2RB setup - the I-formation. I expect Tandon to win the #2 job, he looked great in practice but has to continue it into the preseason and beyond. Gradkowski wins starting center and McKinnie finally works himself into shape.

For goal-line situations, assuming Leach isn't back

Again, Doss and Dickson in there because they look to be good possession guys. Jah has a nasty streak but his position is rotational - throw whichever OLman looks good and can run block. Pierce in the backfield because he runs with much more power.
