How Will The Deep Ball Impact the Offense?

12 posts in this topic

Fact: Joe Flacco throws the best looking deep ball this side of the.....
Well anywhere.

We no longer have Cam Cameron, meaning we aren't going deep on every play anymore(lol).

Our offense will be UNPREDICTABLE! And that's awesome

However, I do think the deep ball will still have a huge impact.

We have a group of really fast WRs and have TEs and a RB that can open things up in the short game.

Will we be going deep a lot? Or will Flacco be using the short game more?

Discuss!

I would expect our offense in general to be more varied, perhaps even throwing in some misdirection and motion before the snap (more than Boldin moving from outside to the slot).

While I doubt we will just have guys running post patterns all day, I wouldn't be surprised to see us take more deep shots.

However, I will say how much we do it depends on how our defense gels to being with, remember the offense and defense can not run like they are two separate units, we tried that and had one do very well and the other struggle. If we play a high-risk high-reward style of offense we will be asking our defense to bail us out more often, so I would expect us to be more steady in the style, perhaps more up-tempo though, with some deep shots mixed in at appropriate times.

This could be one of the most balanced offensives we'd had so we will continue to run the ball but I'm certain there will be plenty of bombs thrown with the speed we have & how those passes open up the underneath. On paper we seem to have the ability to do whatever would work best against the opposing defense.

Getting off the bus, defenses will have a plan not to allow Torrey and the guys to get deep. This will mean keeping Safeties deep. This will open up the middle of the field and Caldwell will be willing to use it much more then Cam.

I think our offense will vary week to week depending on how exactly the defense plays us and what are the weaknesses of the defense. I don't think we'll attempt as many deep passes as last year, but I do think we'll connect at a much higher percentage this last year.

Obviously we will find more success in the regular season by being more balanced. But the deep ball is Flacco strength.

The deep ball is a part of Flacco's strength. Flacco's true strength is the ability to attack every area of the field, both wide and long. His ability to accurate attack tight windows that most QBs wouldn't even attempt the throw is his strength.

I unimaginative play calling of Cam puts Flacco in a both for people to think his strength is the deep ball and that's inaccurate. That's just another facet of his game that he does really well.

I think a part of his game that we have used, but doesn't always get the recognition like a deep pass, has been the ability to throw sideline to sideline quickly and accurately. It is also possible because of his arm strength because he can zip a ball on a corner route faster than most QBs which allows him to take advantage of softer coverage, I can remember how Mason made a living running corner routes with Flacco so I would imagine we will use that strength again. It can serve as a counter to teams backing off because of the deep speed.

Remember the last play in the super bowl, of which we really need first down to move the chain, break 49ers' momentum, and score some point? Joe audibled and changed the running playcalling into passing.  He threw his accurate backshoulder ball to Boldin and completed the first down; after that play, I just see Flacco as all around QB which is a nightmare to any defense cuz he can back-shoulder you, dink dong u, bomb 70yd on u, and exploit your DBs....

This year, we will have a full display of SB MVP with his master Caldwell...

Baltimore, Maryland finally see the sunshine.....

Yea that moreso then his deep passing ability makes Flacco special. I don't think people realize how rare it is to see a QB complete a 15 yard out route from the far hash across the field in tight coverage. 90% of QBs in the NFL won't even attempt that throw. 8% of QBs can't consistently complete it. So that leaves about 2% who can and that's only on a good day. Flacco can do it any time.

That means that's a part of the offense that most defenses don't think they have to defend because most QBs can't even make the throw. I remember a game in 09' or might have been the AFC Championship in 08 vs the Steeles. The Ravens ran Heap down the seam with Clayton running a out route. Troy P had outside coverage, but sat on the seam route because he actually had great position to pick off the out route if thrown. With most QBs the ball would have sailed or floated a bit and Tory P would have had a pick 6. But Flacco was able to drive the ball just past Troy P's hands and completed it. The look at Troy's face said it all.

That's when I knew Flacco was gonna be a stud. It was also like a 30 yard sideline route to Mason just before halftime in the Dolphins playoff game that made me say wow. No other QB makes that throw. I wish I had video.

I see a healthy balance.

We'll run to set up the pa deep ball. Then when they sit deep we'll work over the middle.

I think it's the most balance we will have ever seen here in Baltimore. I think we'll go into each game with a plan that attacks the defenses weakness and stick to it until they can stop it. Then we'll adjust and stay one step ahead.

With caldwells game planning, in game adjustments, play calling and trust in joe to make changes at the line we will be a force to be reckon with. No real elite players or units, but no weaknesses whatsoever. We can beat you anywhere and any way we need to.

Maybe too simplistic of an answer but I don't think it's any more complicated without analyzing each defense individually.

Flaccos deep out is an absolute thing of beauty. No qb throws that route better. The key to our offense this year is to be able to alter the game plan and exploit the defense more quickly. This is what will vault our offense and flacco into the absolute best of the best. This could be the greatest offensive year in raves history.

I said in another thread that Flacco throws one of the best deep balls. He also throws the ball so hard I think it makes it hard for the WR to reel it in or the defender. That's a good and bad thing. Ultimately, I think these WR need more practice with Joe. Losing Boldin will definitely give them that. I realize the loss of Boldin is big, but we all say Boldin was misused and shouldn't have ran what he did with Cam. The truth is he was more like a TE than a WR now. I find it funny how the recent article on the front page even said this, because I also see the connection.

I expect a lot of deep, middle, short, and dump offs. I expect using the middle of the field and the sidelines. I feel good about this. Joe's going to get some deep balls because they can't defend everything.
