CB Jimmy Smith

Also on the td pass huff left his inside zone and left jimmy to dry. He got pulled shortly after and we had elam and ihedigbo in at safety for a while. That wasn't promising

Great point. Huff has really struggled this preseason. I've been unimpressed by him in all honesty. I wouldn't mind at all signing Kerry Rhodes to play safety with Elam.

asa Jackson looks like he could make a good safety if he wasn't suspended. I'd like to have him on the field, seems like he makes plays, maybe down the line he could start opposite Webb. Hard to know.

Yeah. I can see this. I've said a few times I remember someone calling Asa a mini Ed Reed and I'm not confusing him with Omar lol. I do think Kerry Rhodes would be a good signing at this point.

not many are, jones has developed very fast. Jimmy has all the measurables to be up to his level tho. He just need to get the mental side down

Honestly, and this burns me to say it, this is like Jimmy's rookie year.  He's finally working on being an NFL player.

He'll probably serve a purpose similar to Corey when Corey leaves in FA next year.

So, after a night's rest and a clear mind free of being in the moment, I re-watched the game and payed attention to Jimmy. He really didn't play that bad. He played well the first two drives, covering Jones well enough on one play to make Ryan look for White instead. The 3rd drive wasn't good but when you really go back and look only the one pass, the second one, can you really put on Jimmy. On that play, Jones simply outplayed Jimmy to get open.

However, the first and third catches, the latter for the TD, were the same route by Jones. Both times Huff went up to give the LB help with the TE instead of staying back to help Jimmy, also leaving Elam alone back there. Now, I don't claim to know what Huff's responsibility was on those plays, but I would think we'd rather want him back to help cover Jones than have him cover a TE and leave Jimmy by himself against one of the best. Why people aren't considering possible miscommunication in the secondary is beyond me. There was clearly some of that in the Tampa game too.

As for the other two catches made against him, the fade was pretty bad. He seemed to stop running or at least slow down when he looked for the ball, allowing the receiver to get behind him and make the catch. The last catch that came against him is a play that happens a lot and can happen to the best of them. He went to cover Douglas, I believe it was Douglas, and left the flat open. He'll learn from it, that's what the preseason is for.

So, is he not living up to the first round pick status? Sure, that's fair to say. I still think he'll do well this year. Just remember that we will be getting Webb back which will bolster the secondary. I'll take Jimmy against #2 WRs.

Maybe he is laying back a little because he does not want to take a chance that he will be hurt in the preseason. I sure hope that is the case and the Jimmy Smith of the SB shows up for the regular season.

Honestly I'm not worried about Jimmy Smith getting beat by Julio Jones because quite frankly most CBs get beat by him...  He was solid vs Tampa last week, and he can only get better with experience and learning from his mistakes. Jimmy may be in his 3rd year but injuries have kept him from seeing the field as much as he should have...

These things happen to CBs..

Agreed. Our fans tend to blow with the wind a little too much. He's flashed nicely against some tough competition. He got abused by Julio yesterday and the pass to Cone was really a nice fade pass, Jimmy had great coverage on it.

Jimmy was bad yesterday. But I prefer to evaluate our starters after the regular season (or partially into it) not after 2 PS games. I still think Jimmy will be a solid player for us this year.

Jimmy needs to learn to be physical at the line. On those 3 catches by Julio not once did Jimmy press Julio. His biggest upside is his size and he needs to learn how to use it, given that he hasn't played much because of injuries. He still has a lot of work to do. All he had to do was press Julio long enough so the pass rush could have got to Matt Ryan and they were really close all last night.

I'm glad someone else start this post, else I might be labelled a complete hater.

I have one word when it comes to Jimmy Smith... SIGH!

I realized Smith preserved our Super Bowl victory and I am very happy for him. I also realized the Falcons have two stud WR's in White and Jones.

But FFS, his biggest asset and the primary reason he was drafted was because of his size. Can he not check a WR at the line? He doesn't have the quickness to give the receiver a free release and then cover. He is suppose to be putting his hands on the receiver within 5 yds to slow them down, ruin their timing, which then allows him to cover late in the route.

It's not just the double move they he gets torched on. Last night he got torched on inside routes where he gave the receiver a free release. I'll give him some slack and say he was probably expecting help, but he MUST check his man at the line. I don't care if he has help over the top, help to the inside, three other people helping him cover his man; HE MUST USE HIS SIZE AND CHECK HIS MAN AT THE LINE.

P.S. I didn't see Dewy101's post, but he's saying the exact same thing and makes the point that Smith checking at the line helps the pass rush. I can't say it too many times. HE MUST PUT HIS HANDS ON THE RECEIVER!!!!

Going to keep it simple as a Pimple.

Jimmy Smith is a Bum.

And to the person who said Jimmy smith won us the Superbowl.

Umm no he made us almost lose the Superbowl.

Smith is the only person who is targeted that much and people are Still saying, OH he needs time to develop.

If that was Cary Williams i bet we wouldnt be hearing he needs time to develop. The Falcons saw the Weak LinK and took advantage of it.

I'm guessing the coaches told him not to and play man free to test him.

Hate to burst he bubbke but helmet to helmet and holding or pi could easily have been called on those two plays. I think he steps up but he does need to improve. Could also work on how he plays double moves.

You never know what the NFL's League Instructed Referees are going to do on a penalty call. They will call a penalty on one play and not call a penalty for the very same conduct on a different play. That said, Jimmy Smith's goal line play in the Superbowl was tops and a flag could have dropped against Crabtree. No Call was the only way to go in that circumstance on those contacts.

Urgh...Jimmy Smith. I definitely get the feeling he tries, I really do, but...I just don't think he's that good. Maybe he's so bad at defending receivers because he secretly wants to be a receiver? Well, there's only one logical choice - we move Jimmy to WR.

I simply don't understand why Jimmy still bites so easily. It seems like the only time he goes step for step with a WR is when the guy runs in a straight line.

Don't be silly. Only GM's take intricate circumstances and try to reduce them to single sentence conclusions.

Jimmy has all the physical ability from the neck down. All jimmies problem start in his head. It all most seems like hes trying to live up to the hype of being a first round pick, and a shut down corner. When in coverage he is usally hip to hip with the wr, but rarely locates the ball. Its almost like hes scared to look back for the ball, because the wr might catch it when he looks back. Right now hes just an athlete playing at the cornerback position, and I don't see anything changing unless he learns some technique.

That is all we need to hear from you'all on the forum that we need to give #22 time to develop. IMO, if he does not play like a first-rounder, this will be his last year. ...He has had ample time to develop.

Lol yes if he doesn't play to his potential this year it will be a huge disappointment...but there is no universe where he is cut before his rookie deal runs out next year. 0% chance.

Not with this football team anyway. If Cody lasted this long that should say something because he's been very inconsistent as well.

Coming out of college, his biggest strength was his press coverage was it not? But how often has he actually played press coverage here?

It's obvious that he clearly isn't the best off-man corner, and it shows every time he's out on the field. I wouldn't be surprised if his confidence was shot by now.

coaching, we seem to refuse to do it, m sure it was Cary Williams strength as well. We play too soft for fear of the big play. Bend don't break

This is a great post, and very good analysis. The first catch he let up I believe we were in cover 3, meaning he had the deep third of the field. Jones drove him backwards and made a quick move inside that should be open against that coverage. That's really not defensible by Jimmy given his responsibility in the zone.

The second play I agree, he just got beat by Jones. He wasnt that far off though and stuck with him making the tackle right after the catch.

The TD catch, Huff really was at fault. He bit on the underneath route leaving Jimmy out to dry. He was playing outside leverage expecting help inside that wasnt there.

Even the fade wasnt that bad IMO. He had tight coverage, and turned to try to make a play on the ball but it was just perfectly placed. It was just a great throw beating good coverage.

all of this

He didn't play well, but he didn't play bad.  The thing about Jimmy is I want him to play the ball.
