Possible Ravens for the Deacon Jones Award?

10 posts in this topic

Now I understand these answers will have extreme bias, but I was wondering if you guys thought any Ravens would win this award who would it be? And if not a Ravens then who?

I am a huge Arthur Jones fan and I know he is a huge longshot to win the award, but he is who I am cheering for. Though I do not see us having anyone even in the running because we have threats in a lot of directions so I expect are sack count to be distributed over a lot of players.

Outside of our roster, my guess is going to have to be Aldon Smith.

5 guys on my watch list for this award include the following, in no order: Aldon Smith, JPP, Von Miller, Suggs, Doom

Am I a little biased? Maybe. However, I think having both Sizzle and Doom on the same team together will fuel them to give their absolute best in getting sacks. That's just me.

Brandon Williams.
JK, that would be awesome though if he treated the NFL like it was D2 haha

I'm gonna lean more towards Dumervil than Suggs this year. The picture I saw of Suggs, plus a gut feeling tells me he has a fantastic, bounce back year. I think Dumervil will benefit the most from it. Plus Doom gets to play in the 3-4 again and we all know what happened last time that happened.

I'm waiting for the NFL to start the Edward Earl Reed Award for the most interceptions in a season!

But in reality i see the Clay-Maker bouncing back and winning it that Deacon Jones award.

Would love to see Suggs hoist that thing though

We aren't going to have anyone win the Deacon Jones award.

Here's why.

Suggs 10 sack guy

Dumervil 10 sack  guy

Canty 4 sack guy

Ngata 5 sack guy

That's 29 sacks right there (based off of a estimation I made)

From FOUR GUYS. We're not even taking other things into account yet.

We have Art Jones as well

We have Dayrl Smith who's a solid blitzer

Arthur Brown was a GREAT blitzer in college.

We send Webb and Graham out on blitzes a lot.

AT BEST, we will lead the NFL in sacks. At worst, top 5 barring everyone stays healthy

I'd rather have us lead the NFL in sacks as a team, then have us have one guy that leads everyone in individual sacks (that would be cool though)

Lol, these are not true. Smith is an average blitzer. Average. He's not great but not bad. I wouldn't personally consider that solid.

Arthur Brown can blitz, but that isn't his game. He isn't Ellerbe from what I saw in college. Again, before someone comes out and corrects me, he can blitz but that's not his bag. It's not his specialty. He is by no means great at blitzing.

Graham doesn't really do a lot of blitzing. Our CB blitzing really dropped after we lost Webb. Now, if you said Matt Elam would be bringing some blitzes I would completely agree with that.

Solid=Average in my book.

He's a rookie, but he dominated RG3 on a few blitzes in college. From other sources I've heard he's great

Granted, stats aren't everything and don't show the entire picture but Arthur Brown has 3 career NCAA sacks.

As for Smith, I won't argue your definition of solid. If you feel solid is average, I'd agree there. He might get us 1-2 sacks this year. He could surprise me, but that's my guess. The problem with these coverage LBs is that you have to take them out of coverage to blitz. That essentially reduces their biggest asset. With a LB who is as good in coverage as Brown & even Smith are, I just don't see the benefit in blitzing them because a lot of times they will be the ones preventing the big play or the conversion.

As I said, I think Elam gets a few sacks.

Thats Demarcus Wares award. They should just give it to him right now.The cowboys play the afcw that has SD and their bad oline,KC and their rookie LT and what ever oakland has to offer. Then in the nfc they play the north where every oline except the vikings is weak.I see where having a career year and setting a new sack record.

Von Miller. If he adds to his resume of being the leader of that broncos defense on top being the sack artist, i see hin grabbing that award in his 3rd as a pro.
