I was having an argument with a friend of mine the other day, and he ,like I would expect most people to, had come to the decision that ILB is the most important position. I however believe that Safety is the most important. This may, sub-consciously , be because I am a huge ed reed fan.But either way, my reason for this opinion is that safeties are the only players that can control every aspect of the opposition offense, they defend against the pass, but always have an eye on the backfield. line men can stop both also but their pass defence is more indirect, they can hurry the passer and get sacks, but it's ultimately the DB's that have to make the plays.(in my opinion)

Depends on the talent of the team. With the Ravens most look at ILB (Ray) or S (Ed Reed) as the most important because statistically they make the biggest impact. But as we saw last year and most recall from the SB season we are a much better defense if our DTs/NTs are playing well. The interior DL set the tone for Ray to frow freely to the ball on running plays and helps The OLBs and DEs flow freely to the QB on passing plays.

Yeah, i suppose, but look at bob sanders and the colts, his return turned that D into a half respectable unit, whereas before, they got run over by RON DAYNE!, you cant tell me that a D-lineman could have had the same impact

But one could argue the loss of Corey Simon is what made the need for Sanders to help against the run. Remember it was Corey's absence that made them feel a need to go out and Get Booger Mcfarland's antiquated self...

but its like we have both already said, the D/NTs help the 'backers and ends get some room to make plays, but they still have to make the plays.

Which is why I stated it depends on talent on the team.

I really don't know what is the most important position on defense in football but I do know for the Ravens, it's the safety position. The front seven is great and teams almost never abuse them but the secondary is different. Ed Reed and Chris McAlister are two of the best at their positions but both have flaws. Reed gambles some times and McAlister draws penalties when he gets frustrated. Dawan Landry isn't too fast but he's great against the run. However, it's Samari Rolle who's the weak link. He still knows how to cover but because he's never been a physical player, now that he' lost a step, he isn't as effective. Ed Reed is really going to have to help out Rolle a lot more this season than he did last. If not, teams will just put their best receiver opposite Rolle, send him deep and heave one. That's why I think safety is the most important position.

Certainly, based on last years performances, samari was our weakest DB, but I think we should atleast give him one year to rebound before labelling him the weak link of the D.

Alll positions on the defense are important in there own way, or else there wouldn't be a football game. I wanted to vote and the one that I thought may be a little more important then any others is MLB.

They are not only for the run, but they have to cover recievers, and stand back in zone. So you have to be strong and fast. Plus they are normally the leaders of the Defense.

But every postion plays an important roll, so it is hard to make that decision.

Given the current state of the rules governing the passing game I would have to say CB, subsequently it's no coincidence their salaries have gone through the roof. If not the most important then probably the most difficult position to play.

I would have to agree with this. CB is the most difficult position when you really think about it. But still if I had to decide most important it would be MLB.

Middle/Inside Linebackers are typically defensive leaders that have intangibles that effect the entire defense if they go down.

They play their biggest role in stopping the run, and forcing a one dimensional game, and often keep the defense inspired and productive.

I don't feel like typing a whole lot this early in the morning so I am going to make it short and simple. I feel the most Important position on Defense is our "CORNERBACKS" without two good corners, the other team will just demolish us with the long ball and blow us out of the water....

I Can't Imagine a GOOD QB against us with out good CORNERS....
