The minicamp reports on our defense

48 posts in this topic

we've heard about the defense dominating the minicamp. reports saying the defense is smothering, getting to the qb constantly, swarming to the ball, not allowing any rushing yards, sending the offense into a funk causing long streaks of 3&outs, multiple interceptions etc. , and this is with limited contact, where the offense should shine.

now is this exciting or worrisome? ive been saying since day 1 that im 100% supportive of letting our young receivers play. if theyre saying all this good stuff about how our young receivers are performing so far, but then contradict theirselves by talking about how the offense is always getting shut down, does this mean our defense is THAT good? or are the reporters just blowing smoke about how our new core players on offense look?

i personally believe that joe is just as advertised, and when they say he looks like a surgeon back there in that pocket, i believe it, and i believe our defense really is good enough to smother some top flight teams, but i only believe that to an extent.

so is anyone else a little worried about our offense after these reports? or is our defense just looking that good? should i maybe just shut up til training camp and preseason? or is this a good time to start worrying? lol i dunno, were in the deadest part of the offseason, i need SOMETHING to post about.

No worries, our D is stacked. It will only make our O better to practice against such a stellar group.

I means nothing, the, big up everyone and everything. You would need an unbiased media member to attend, you really think AW, or the writers for this sight are going to day the receivers are playing awful, or that flacco is tearing the d apart? Or the slime is dominating McKinnie and oher and we may need to trade for a legit back up qb because joe has a chance of injury?

No way. Take everything with a grain of salt

Yeah I'm not really taking many of the reports seriously. I really believe in this defense, they have the potential to be great but I'm also a bit skeptical. I think our DL definitely improves, but the secondary and ILB's core still concerns me.

I'm not expecting a top 5 defense but I feel it has the potential to be. I think we'll be a top 10 with all the talent we got. I just gotta see it all come together first.

The reports about a lot of our receivers dropping the ball is one I really don't like. I don't think reporters would lie about that, it's definitely concerning if it continues through TC.

Where did you see that?  I haven't seen anything.

I hear on radio from mark zinno that he thinks our receivers will drop as many as they catch, a lot have stone hands, he didn't single anyone out though.

Mark Zinno is one of the least knowledgable "reporters" I know.  I'm not saying he won't be right, but I would never take anything he says seriously.

My favorite piece of news I heard from mini camp is how great Jimmy Smith has looked. Second to that is the news on Suggs

Yes! I'm really excited to see Jimmy Smith this year.  Chris Canty as well.

If preston doesn't bring it up I doubt it.  If anyone will bring up warts on a raven it's Preston.

I don't think they'll drop as much as they catch but I don't know why he would just say that if we weren't dropping passes. I'm not worried about it at this point, but if it continues in training camp and the preseason then I'll be concerned

I'm doubting Zinno was even at any of the practices lol.

no one else has mentioned any dropped passes, not even a few, if there was loads, you think someone would say, there's been a couple drops.

Here's what I heard from the young receivers in battle:

1. Tandon Doss - He has good hands and route running, but hasn't truly stood out in anything.  Reports say that he's the favorite right now, but hasn't truly impressed to the point where the job is his.

2. Deonte Thompson - Of course, there's always the speed to like.  His route running has greatly improved, but he still struggles with consistency issues when it comes to his hands.

3. Tommy Streeter - Apparently, he's improved greatly, but is still fairly raw.  His hands and route running can still stand to be improved, but you can't teach size like that in the red zone.

4. David Reed - He's been working in the slot primarily, and has shown some flashes of potential.  He runs good routes, has good hands, and has some elusiveness, but like Doss, hasn't 100% impressed.

5. Aaron Mellette - Reports say that Mellette's camp has been up and down.  He's had some moments of greatness and some moments of not greatness.  He's apparently pretty overmatched so far.

6. LaQuan Williams - I've heard very little on LaQuan.  The only thing I've heard is that he looks largely unimpressive and is probably last out of the 6 in competition.

If Suggs and ngata get back to top form along with Webb, I can't see us not being anything other than a top 5 defence. And top 3 in sacks.

I think some people are being a little blindly optimistic about the offense because of what Joe and they did on the run to the Superbowl but the uncertainty of the receiving core has to be worrisome.

Reports coming out they are concerned about ngata due to this injury, worried about conditioning. Hope he can be good but September. Need a big year from him

Yeah. I'm more worried about Ngata than Suggs.
