Clearing cap space

54 posts in this topic

This. We really needed the cap space just to operate. PS and such.

I doubt anyone on our practice squad is going to count against out cap.

The extra cap will likely be used just to give us some flexibility and breathing room. We may need to pursue a vet WR later, but even if we don't there is still cap carryover I believe. This would mean that cap we don't use this year would be pushed into the next year as credit. That extra 3 mil may come in handy when extending Pitta, Jones, and Smith.

Everyone on the PS counts against the cap.

Cruz wont come to Giant's minicamp w/o a deal.

Unless we have enough cap to give him a contract, his not going to play for us.

If this move was to resign Pitta then I'm competed fine with it and I'm stoked

But what if it wasn't? Although I totally agree that would stoke me as well. It could be nothing more than creating cap room at this point and opening a roster spot for someone else who may not ever see the field.

True. I'm just hoping we get a deal done with Pitta soon.

Sign Elam and Pitta and everyone will cheer when Juice turns out to be the extra set of hands we needed.

What about the extra cap we haven't used last season, why aren't we being credited for that?

As noted above, we got the extra cap. However, it was so minimal that other bonuses and stuff basically blocked it out.

They now have more than they hoped for, because they would obviously have preferred to have Leach and some additional Cap space, but this move was likely about being able to carry a surplus into the season in order to have enough space for in-season injury replacements.

Anything left over can then be carried into 2014.

This is similar to them asking McKinnie for a paycut last year. They needed Cap space to carry into the season and he was the best candidate. This year, it was Leach.

$6.6M, $5.4M when Elam signs.

Brian McFarland ‏@RavensSalaryCap 14h Matt Elam, still unsigned, will count $1,230M against Cap once signed. Coupled w/ Leach release, that will leave Ravens $5,374,459 under

Brian McFarland ‏@RavensSalaryCap 14h Cap savings from release of Vonta Leach is $3M, but the net effect under Rule of 51 is $2.595M because of Rof51 replacement value of $405K.

Brian McFarland ‏@RavensSalaryCap 23h As stated last week, Ravens are $3,604,823 under the Cap after the Williams signing. The NFLPA has corrected their errors and now agrees! ;)

According to Aaron Wilson, we'll be $6.6M under the cap with the release/trade of Leach.

He's since correct that this AM to $6.2M under.

Thanks for clarifying.  I love/hate the rule of 51.  I love it because it makes sense, but hate it since I always forget about it.

This doesn't sound like the smartest strategy to me. 1) we just won the super bowl and are planning a defense. Don't get cute and try to roll over cap space for next year when we want to win NOW and have the players in place to do so. 2) if you want to roll it over for next year to prepare for the extensions of Pitta, Jones and Smith why would you want to roll it over for next year and allow them to play another season and show why they deserve big $$$. If FO is that high on these guys sign them now for less. Don't make another Flacco mistake, get a deal done now. 3) Carry cap space for in season injuries? Anyone we sign in-season is getting minimum money because if they were any good they would already be on another team's roster so that makes zero sense. Hated the Leach move. This feels very much like the move the Jets made a few years back when they cut their veteran FB for John "The Terminator" Connor and look how that turned out for them. The Terminator stinks and now their run game stinks. Leach was only 31 years old, we could have gotten another great year out of him. Hoping the Harvard kid is better than billed and this does not come back to bite the FO in the butt.

I hope we sign someone else with the new cap space instead of carrying it over. I'm pretty sure a player's agent knows where a team stands in their cap situation, so extra space can just lead to slightly bigger deals to everyone we need to sign next year.

So you would be afraid of adding a Franchise Left Tackle like Jake Matthews or Taylor Lewan with that pick?

lol why'd this get neg'd...apparently speaking the truth isn't allowed anymore. Quick everyone hide your opinions before the neggers get here!

1. Winning now doesnt mean maxing out the cap. In fact, its just the opposite because by not maxing out the cap and having carry over we can accumulate and maintain talent extending the "now" period.

2. The Front Office does not always have control over when players want to negotiate and complete deals. See Flacco which you cited as well. They offered him a contract and he didnt accept. As a result, they needed to pay him more this year. It wasn't a mistake. It was just bad luck cap wise. If we didn't win this year Ozzie would have gotten the deal he wanted or better.

3. Plenty of Quality signings available if a player goes down that would cost a little more than the vet minimum. Brandon lloyd, Brandon Moore, and a few others come to mind should. If McClain cant comeback from spinal injury we are desperately thin at ilb and desmond bishop may be dropped by the pack. He could come in and help us. The bears show a similar strategy by upating their emergency contacts with J.Russell as a just in case.
