After cutting Vonta Leach, the Ravens have re-signed veteran TE Billy Bajema.
Baltimore Ravens Verified account @Ravens

I assume that's because we're not sure if Furstenburg and Juszczyk can block at the next level yet. He could still be a camp cut.

We are going to miss Vonta. I wish he could have played out his contract here just for this piece of info here

Leach on field: Ray Rice 206 att /869 yds /10 TD in '12.
Without? Rice 135 att / 582 yds /1 TD

If Bajema was such a good blocker, it wouldn't have taken so long to sign him. He's basically a camp body, only with the benefit of having experience and knowing the system. We likely just needed another FB/TE for training camp. Go with what you know. But Bajema won't make the roster unless there are a lot of injuries at that position.

That is pretty contrived though, because we'd be using Leach for most goal-line attempts. Hence a lower ypc but higher touchdown %.

If there's one positive for me, it's that we got Billy Bajema back.  I have no clue why, but I really like that guy haha.

So long? We didn't need him before now. As for him being a camp body who will probably be cut; well, isn't that what I said? That's what I implied by saying he could still be a camp cut.

I'm not understanding your post here. Maybe I read it wrong.

He's not just a camp body. We wouldn't have signed him specifically if that's the case. He has experience here as you said. Worst case for him is he's cut, which means Juszczyk and/or Furstenburg or whoever on the roster is capable enough to replace Leach.

I'm not going to speak on how long it took to sign him and all that stuff, but he's more than just a camp body.  We could get a camp body for considerably cheaper.  With the veteran exemption, Bajema costs $620,000, while a UDFA TE would cost $405,000.  I know it's a very small difference, but if they really wanted a guy just to take some reps, it would be a UDFA most likely.  That's not to say he's going to make the roster, but he is probably in competition with Furstenburg for the 3rd TE spot.

Bajema will have to be considerably better than that undrafted rookie we signed to make the team. As a veteran, even a minimum salary for Bajema would be considerably more than what an undrafted rookie would make.

I meant that bringing in Bajema doesn't mean the FO doesn't trust Juice or Furstenburg. They likely brought him in because they need a new FB/blocking TE on the training camp roster, and they chose Bajema because his experience would make him more helpful to our roster players than some UDFA rookie would. If he had a better chance of making the roster, he would've been resigned back when David Reed was. Bajema was with our team last year, so the FO already knows what he brings. If he really is a better blocker, or if his blocking skills are that useful, then it shouldn't have taken Vonta leaving for him to be brought back.

Quote;

Newsome indicated that Leach could end up back in Baltimore.

“There could be an opportunity for him to return to the Ravens once he explores the free agent market, and we could re-visit this before or during training camp,” Newsome said.

That's virtually identical yards per attempt.  4.34 vs 4.31

I do think if it shows up anywhere it's the redzone.

I actually like the Bajema signing as a result of this. He's a guy that can play TE AND FB. He's a stud blocker with reliable hands. Bajema might be worth more in Caldwell's offense than Leach is.

He's a decent blocker, but he's not leach.  Leach helped us in the redzone, that's the only place I think we're really going to notice his absence.

I loved Leach as much as any Ravens fan but under Caldwell he was becoming a part time player . His playing time would have taken another hit this year as Caldwell's play book is fully implemented . I'm sure the Ravens front office offered him a salary cut based on him seeing the field less and less . You will see more large receiver sets with Caldwell and that leaves Leach riding pine .

Im honestly not happy with this. I think there is a fine line between the truth and wishful thinking and the fact is we lost the best fullback in the league ( by a long shot) and I'm under the impression with the signing of bb that we arent that convinced with juice. We lost some real hardcore leaders on offense, Birk,Boldin and now leach. All of whom were proven stars in this league BEFORE they joined us. Kyle could easily be a bust and the WR's trying to replace boldin could be busts too. I think our offence will take a step back this year. The defense though will be better.

Our offense won't be the same...which is a good thing. Our offense with Leach on the field was predictable and archaic. This team is truly Flacco's now and we will be better off because if it. We have a much more versatile player in Juice. He won't be replacing Leach, because he will have a different role. He can be a weapon in the passing attack and he can block.

logical post of the day

But I can't be sure if the offense takes a step back. Flacco will be working with his new OC the whole year, so It will be interesting to see the changes that will be made.

That would be a good move for them. They could use a little extra help for their young RBs. Unfortunately, we have to play them.

Yeah. Can't wait to see how we play against him if he does go to another team.

I hope he doesn't go to Cleveland. They're losing their patience with Owen.

Thats what I said, thank god the let Reggie Bush go. I still think him in the open field is no joke.

Looks like Juice made some noise on the 11 on 11 drills. He supposedly blew up Daryl Smith.

That's very promising to hear. I hope he's the beast I think he is. He's one of my highlighted players this offseason.

Just read that apparently the Giants are also interested in him. Not too surprised there. He would be a great fit there, or Dallas even. Hell, almost any team needing a FB could use him--the ones that actually do, that is.

I don't think he'll have a hard time finding work. He's the best FB in the league even if he is older.

Agreed.  Even with the movement away from the FB, teams will still come calling for him.  I'm thinking that he'll have a new team by Friday.
