Ravens release then re-sign FB Vonta Leach

669 posts in this topic

He and Juice are different FB. I'd love to keep both and also have Juice function as a 3rd TE as well.

Vonta seems to enjoy being a Raven and is level headed enough to know that even with a "restructure" from the Ravens he will make more than he would on the open market.

if he is restructuring can we ask Haloti Ngata, Marshal Yanda, and Lardarius Webb to do the same

In a word no. That is not how the ravens opperate. Restructures of star playerrs like these just defers money to future years. These contracts were designed to be loaded in specific years so the team is not overloaded all in one year. Also restructure pushes more money further down the line when production can slip. Then you have to either deal with lesser production or dead money. Ie sanchez.

I heard the Steelers might need a new GM or a cap guy. Perhaps you'd do well there.

Sign him up!

FYI Yanda did restructure his contract, though I think it was last year if memory serves to sign someone who came on the FA market, though who that was eludes me at the moment.

Great answer.

A restructure refers to a change in the contract, such as in the form of a pay cut.

Very rarely if ever do you see a restructure referred to as a pay cut, its generally moving salary into a signing bonus to lengthen the cap hit, which I really hope doesn't happen

Looks like Leach is next and we may have a rookie at Fullback. Ravens & Leach can not agree on a restructured deal.

Once again another agent gets in the way of what probably is a fair deal. If this happens, I blame his agent like I blamed Boldin's agent.

Just saw that.  Very disappointing.  I understand not wanting to pay him that much, but the guy is a brick wall for defenders.  I'm hoping this means good things about Juszczyk though!

The only way I would accept this if the coaches came out and said they were impressed with Juszczyk enough that they felt they could move on from Leach without missing a beat.

Can anyone figure out how cutting Leach wasn't thought of in the first place when we couldn't get Boldin to restructure?

Traded or cut apparently.

Well looks like he wasn't prepared to restructure much after all... He will get signed somewhere he said

I was hoping Leach could be kept, but I can't say I didn't see this coming. I just never really saw how Leach would have a role in the new offense under Caldwell. Then adding Castillo to help the running game, I just expected a lot of single back running game and even before Juice was drafted, I thought Ant Allen would be converted to the role Juice will hold.

So while this news isn't the best, I can't say it wasn't expected.

It's not related. We weren't going to keep boldin except for a big discount. Not sure there is room on the roster for leach anyway with juice and Allen on the roster. Leach is also not a long term solution at 31. This could possibly meaner are looking at a trade or free agent player. Possibly someone like santonio Holmes

Also wanted to add that I'm not too surprised by this move.  I thought it would happen before last season just looking at his cap number.  The only thing that kind of confuses me is why now and not earlier in the offseason?  I'm sure this was in the plans all along by some degree, so why now?

Maybe it is because we hadn't drafted Juszchyk (sp?). It seems pretty obvious to me. The FO isn't going to overpay.

I'd like to have both Leach and Juice on the roster, but that might not have been realistic. I think part of this is the possible emergence of Matt Furstenburg as a blocking TE. With Leach on the roster, that's probably the position we'd see Juice in (since Pitta and Dickson haven't done well as blockers). But with Furstenburg taking over the Billy Bajema 3rd TE role, we don't have room for 2 players at a position that only sees 40% of the snaps.

And because I can't seem to keep all of my thoughts in one post today, I have one more thing to add.  With Leach gone, this likely opens up a roster spot for someone at any position... the best player remaining.  If we had kept 2 FBs, it would have negated that extra spot from only carrying 2 QBs.  With only 1 FB and 2 QBs, we have that open spot for really any position.

I'm gonna miss him too, he should find work else where though.
Probably won't get paid as much as we were willing to restructure him for. If we can't trade him for something good I hope we release him, let him test the market and see if wants to come back or not.

I hope at least this time, the Ravens don't just trade him for a low pick and at least get something high for him. If the Vikings were smart, they would trade for Leach and help AP get those extra nine yards this year.

Leach is a FB. A dying breed. And while he's very good at it, he isn't worth anything but a low round pick

If we do a package deal. Then we might be able to get some talent. But that's very unlikely

No one's going to trade anything of value for a FB, even as good as he is.  There's not enough competition or even demand for the position.
