Ravens release then re-sign FB Vonta Leach

669 posts in this topic

People getting all excited over "supposed to sign" would be very disappointed to find out that he's just bluffing to get a contract offer from Miami, if that's indeed the case... I remember Malcom Floyd "supposedly signing" with us just to get a bigger contract from San Diego. Thank God we signed Jacoby instead of Malcom, but I and a lot of other posters on here were pretty ticked off about it. Just saying, be cautious with the enthusiasm levels.

If Vonta comes back I will be excited, I love the idea of him and Pierce out there when we have a healthy lead just eating up that clock. If he goes to the Giants instead, best of luck to him.

It's a shame how pass happy the league has become and that the traditional full back is being phased out.

It's sad.

I think we have the future prototype in Juice though. Learning to block behind Leach for a year or two should be good for him. I hope it's the case.

Personally, I think he is a bulldozer and the best fb in football today but I would prefer he was not resigned. Unfortunately, 90% of the time he is out on the field the defense knows its a run. I would rather see rookies get playing time instead of watching them sit and develop late.

That reason you cited is precisely why he should be re-signed in my view. It will give play action passing a whole new meaning if what you say is correct. Remember, Leach can catch balls to in short yardage situations.

Completely agree.

We've had him out there for 2 seasons and yet our offense has actually been less effective when utilizing PA. That's probably directly a function of personnel and lack of versatility on the field.

This thing is absolutely crazy. He's a darned fullback, sign with somebody already. I could understand if it was a blockbuster signing of a receiver or lineman or some other valued position, but he's making this drag on for purely selfish reasons. I'd say we pull the deal on Monday. That's plenty enough time for a fullback to sign with someone, best fullback ever or not.

If I was in Vonta's shoes, i would weigh my options.   This will likely be his last year in NFL.

I would too, and other players would do the exact same thing. The problem is, he's had a very long time to weigh his options out, taking all things into consideration. He's not garnering interest from all 32 NFL teams, or even a quarter of them. He only has 2 contract offers as it stands. How hard is it to weigh maybe 4 or 5 different teams who want you, and only 2 official contracts actually on the table?

If a FB goes down early in some team's camp, there's that chance of Vonta being offer a 2 year deal. That's what he wants.

Yep. That's what I started thinking today as well. That's about the only way he gets more than a one year deal.

I don't understand what the big deal is. Would YOU want to come back to your previous employer with your tail between your legs for the money that they offered you in the first place?

Besides, its not just a matter of "whats out there now". Like Mod 3 said, training camp started up this week. he may have been waiting for other teams, to see if their FB got injured, or if they just didn't like what they had or something.

I don't think Leach is using us as leverage but you never know. I don't mind him returning and I'd like him back but if I had to choose it would be to not bring him back. At least that's how I currently feel. They could change. Heck we could see Juszczyk and think to ourselves that he needs real work and need to bring back Leach.

I'm open-minded here but my preference is to not bring him back.

Honestly we do need redzone help.  And that's one place where leach really makes a difference.

Yeah and the Giants had a FB who was injured and yet they chose to sign another player over Leach. That should say a lot.

Saturday Update: Ravens & Leach remain in contract talks.

The Baltimore Sun confirms the Ravens "remain the frontrunner" to re-sign Leach, but the sides are still haggling over contract details. The Dolphins never evened offered Leach a deal. The Giants were offering Leach the veteran minimum base salary.

At this point, we should just forget about it.  We made our offer, and we can just let him decide what to do.  There's really no point in continuing these "talks."  Frankly, I'm starting to tire of this and might be leaning more towards moving on from the whole Leach situation.  Our offer appears to be the best one out there, so he can take it or leave it.  Walk away and let him do whatever he wants.

Honestly after this news about Pitta I'd really rather we spend that money elsewhere if possible

On the flip side, Pitta's injury could also necessitate Juice playing a lot more TE.  Leach may be pretty useful in that case.

Yeah, I thought about that. I think I'd rather go elsewhere though. Pitta wasn't really a blocker and I'd be concerned relying on a rookie to replace Dennis.

A FB would be a lot more valuable now, given the scarcity at TE now.  Leach would help the blocking game, giving Dickson more opportunities for receptions.

I still think Leach is on the radar, and will likely return.  I also think that Shiancoe rumor comes to fruition, although I think I'd rather have Dallas Clark.
