Flexibility here too, he started mostly at OLB and has a good chunk of starts at ILB from what I read.

I agree with your last statement but your two statements seem to contradiction themselves.

First you say that the injury will never fully heal, then our defense is getting better.

If Smith will never recover from an injury that caused him to miss last year, then he won't have that much impact to our defense.

I believe you meant to say that the injury takes a long time to heal.

How does Ozzie continue to make the talking heads look foolish. Now i'm not saying Smith is great or anything. But on paper this guys is an upgrade over anyone we had at ILB last year. Yes Ellerbe is younger and seeming headinig into his prime, but he still has to prove it. Smith is more constant that this point.

He's an upgrade over Jameel and Ray just wasn't the Ray we know and love last year. More importantly, the Dline is upgraded and that should make this guy that much better. Pees should have fun moving this guys around like he did Ellerbe last year. Right now everything is on paper.

But  we can say that Ozzie has at least allow the defense to stay the same as last year if not upgrade for a far less price. Huff vs Ed(a injured ED)....Digg/Elam vs Pollard....Brown/Smith vs Lewis/B.A.....Doom vs Kruger....Williams vs Kemo. On paper the defense looks really good.

Another quality signing by Ozzie.

Can't agree more. A cool thing is that this signing helps us bring Brown along slow or quickly. We can keep Smith fresh and rotate him and Brown or even have them start next to each other. It gives us insurance in case Jameel isn't ready. We need some veteran leadership back there. He provides that big time.

I'm in love with this signing.

Daryl Smith is a very good linebacker..i honestly did a check on all the MLBs in the league and I'd only take 6 over him IF he can play like he did from 2009-2011 hes def an upgrade over ellerbe and mclain. Hes 31. London Fletcher is freakin 38 and has been beasting. Make no mistake Daryl Smith if he were playing for the giants or some high market team would have made 3-4 pro bowls by now

Yeah. I read that. I also heard McClellan is out because he had surgery on his shoulder.

I'm really excited about our linebackers. I love Ray. He's my favorite Raven ever but I can't wait to see this team without him now.

these are young hungry lions, add some vet knowledge and that's a recipe for big things to come

Also it gives insurance for Upshaw as well. I personally don't think his weight is an issue, I expect the guy to come into camp ready to go. However if he's not up to par, Pees can use Smith in a lot of the OLB duties that Upshaw might have been asked to perform. I think Pees has high hopes for Upshaw this year, as in using him as a Rover type player.

Smith just brings that much more flexibility.

I like the idea of having a guy like this on the roster. He still has something in the tank and he provides good leadership to a MLB that lost most of it this year. I love the idea, if anything, to have him in there in case we lose a starter as well as the fact that this guy is not only a good MLB but OLB and pass rusher. Take in account this guy spent all his time in Jax so he has never even smelt a championship in his career. I would think for someone at his point in his career, he will be more hungry than some of the young guys in there to go after that third trophy. That is really how you make championship teams, add hungry youth that has talent and knows that the only way to make a name and make that big contract is to bring home that ring and to also add vet leadership that still have something to prove, and something in the tank that whats that final chance to get a ring. when everyone is hungry, another title run is only a matter of time.

Yea that may sound harsh a bit, but I agree. I can't wait to see these young guys fly around and make plays.

I think the McAdoo move should give fans a preview of things to come. We all have certain guys who we think have potential and could become players, but this team is stacked with young talent and some really good guys just won't make it.

For it's it's David Reed and Nigel Carr. I can't wait to see those 2 guys perform, but I wouldn't be surprised to see either cut.

Smith is a great signing. We could definitely use the ILB depth. He played mostly Sam in the Jags 4-3 defense, and a little bit of Mike as well. I would not expect him to play any OLB for us though, he isn't a pass-rusher.

Yea to piggy back off your point a bit. These young guys are having the greatest time of their lives right now. They just met the President and will receive their rings tomorrow. Most of these guys don't truly understand what it means to be pros yet, so I also expect some of these guys to have a bit of a complacent approach early on. However you guys veteran guys like Huff, Doom, Spears and Smith who haven't experienced it, they'll really push these young guys. Then a guy like Canty who has already been there and done that can say hey, in New York we won 2 Super Bowl and fail to make the playoffs the next year because we had the same attitude that some of you guys have. We gotta do better.

I love the mix of youth and veteran experience. Also nobody on this team is on their last legs, like Ray, Ed and Birk were. Bmac and Chris are the only guys at 33, so the vets aren't even old.

Jags had 3-4 one year he can play 34 ibl for us

Our defense got even better

Brown is healing from his sports hernia and Smith has the experience to help to bring him up to pro speed.  This is a win-win situation for both of them.  I just hope that neither of them pull a groin this season.

He is great depth. Not contradicting anything I am saying. McClain and Brown will start most likely. Just glad to have veteran depth. Even with a groin injury he is better than BA was.

Daryl Smith is a quiet guy who lets his actions on the football field speak for him.  "At Georgia Tech Smith was a four year Letterman and a team captain led the team in tackles for two of his four years. He started 44 of 46 games while at Georgia Tech recording 383 tackles, 15 sacks, and three interceptions.  Daryl Smith has passed the 100 tackle mark in seven straight years as of 2011."  (source-Wikipedia)

I was thinking Daryl Smith and Jameel as the starters, and Brown subs for Jameel on third down.

I think it all depends on how they practice and perform. If we've learned anything about Harbs, he makes guys earn their playing time and define their own roles by how they prepare. It seems that many think Brown will start because he was the 2nd round pick, but ask Jimmy Smith how much your draft status means to Harbs.

I think that regradless who starts, these 3 guys will see a lot of action.

I foresee a lot of rotation. A linebacker by committee system would be great for these three.

Yes, I can recall Pees mentioning that's what he evisions for the defense. Not having Ray actually helps in this area because he was a liability in pass coverage, but no one would every tell the G.O.A.T to sub off the field lol. Now the Ravens can actually match up much better in pass coverage against teams. Also the fact that Pees likes to blitz Webby a lot and Huff can actually slide down and play Nickle. It should be fun to watch how many guys actually contribute to this defense.

I agree on all point, especially your last. As much as I hate to say it, if Ray and Reed didnt get it done this year, that would have been their last chance I honestly feel. I believe FO would have let Reed go regardless due to contract issues and some health ones as well and Ray was gonna retire either way. Kruger was not a full time starter and Cary...............well look in the papers on how many practices he has missed so far and you can see why he is not here anymore. Pollard? he speaks for himself. I think the only guy we would even really miss is Ellerbe and that is only because he was so integrated into our system. I wish Ellerbe all the luck in the world but to be totally honest, not alot of names that leave the ravens outside of Holmes and whats his name that went to the Chargers(not JJ, the other OLB that we cut a while back ago but you can count JJ too I guess)left baltimore and had more success. I think Baltimore will fine tune their next MLB, either via in house development or the draft, so that we can have a back up if McClain goes down or if its time to find Brown a MLB partner for the long haul. FYI, I hope McAdoo finds his way back onto the practice squad since he has cleared waivers.

Huff is gonna be a beast in this new system since the pass rush will provide enough pressure to allow Huff to jump some routes and catch some off queue passes. With Web, Huff, Corey, and Elam back there, this D is gonna be a thing to watch in 2013.

Yea, D should definitely be a Top 10 defense this year, strong possibility of being Top 5. To me besides the front 7, biggest strength for us will be our interchangeable safeties that can play either safety position and man up good also. I can see us playing a lot of Cover 0 football bringing the heat then show the same look and only have 4 guys coming with everyone else dropping back. It's major when you can have one safety play man coverage and with us having both of our safeties with the ability to play man coverage, should make for a pretty darn good football team. Huff is our Ed Reed and Elam is out Bob Sanders or vice versa, lol.
