Ravens sign Daryl Smith to 1 year deal

I think this is a good signing.  He was a productive starting linebacker for a number of years, that's something we might need depending on how some guys recover from injuries.

On another note, I think this shows that Smith and McClain (if healthy for both) will be starting at ILB and they'll be easing Arthur Brown into a role.  I'd assume Josh Bynes has some sort of role on the team as well.  McClellan, Carr, Copeland, and Hall all have to work very hard for a spot now.

If he were not in Jacksonville, he would have been to a few pro bowls. If hes healthy, hes one heck of a steal. 31 isnt old...hes younger then Karlos Dansby. Hes a true pro. Our Defense is set in my opinion. The only trade i can see happening now is one for a WR if the young ones dont show enough. I know its been said a trillion times but anquan boldin was such a clutch player for us on 3rd downs throughout his tenure here.

Awesome! I love the signing!

Sorry to see McAdoo go. He was my boy because of his potential but he's been out of football for years.

McAdoo is still underweight. He just wasn't going to make the roster. Good signing.

McAdoo was a project. Our team has way too many talents to hold onto projects. Hope he finds a good team to develop him like New York Giants.

I see this as more of a replacement for Dannell Ellerbe, not so much as a starter. Yes he can be a starter if need be, but I see him as that guy that'll replace McClain in sub packages. I'm sure he'll start off as a starter, but if Brown is quick to handle the starter role, Smith will be more of a sub package ILB imo. He can cover well, he has pass rush abilities, and he's a pretty good tackler in space.

Also he'll help teach these young guys this year. I don't think the Ravens wanna put too much on Brown, Bynes, Carr or any other young ILB. Having Smith will allow those guys to learn and earn.

I see what your saying but I think arthur brown is the sub package ILB.  I have a feeling McClain isnt ready to start the season and Brown/smith end up being the starters.  I used to live in Jacksonville and this guy has been one of the most underrated players in football the last 10 years

Nice. A solid vet to add some depth and leadership. The only question is where will he play? I think he was a weak side OLB in the 4-3, so maybe they are looking at him for ILB in the 3-4...

Yeah it's already announced that he'll play ILB here.

Yeah. I saw him in the minicamp video and he still looked rail thin. They guys been on IR the past two years and he couldn't add even a little bit of weight? Odd.

I love this signing. Daryl Smith has been one of my favorite underrated players in football over the past few seasons. His injury was unfortunate, but it was seemingly an isolated occurrence, as he missed just 4 games in his previous 8 seasons. Smith was one of the best all-around OLBs when healthy, and if he's anywhere near 100%, he'll be a quality starter opposite of Arthur Brown. In either case, it's the epitome of a low risk, high reward scenario.

I don't know how serious his knee injury in '11 but him rehabbing his torn Achilles likely got in the way of him adding notable bulk.

Smith had played all three linebacker positions in Jacksonville’s 4-3 defense, but he has mostly been a strong-side linebacker. I'd look for him to be the starting strong side ILB with Brown as the weak side ILB.

Low risk, high reward signing and could be a great compliment to Arthur Brown if he returns to form. What's not to like?

Does anybody know what Jersey number he's getting?

I can tell you what number he isn't getting with a 100% degree of certainty - #52! That number will be RETIRED!

If he can beat the young ILBs for a job, then I think he deserves a spot. If not, then it was for competition sake.

Let the best man win.

Haha I'm glad he's here for no other reason than he killed us when we would play him, that Jax game at the start of the highlights still gives me nightmares...
