Ravens sign Daryl Smith to 1 year deal

98 posts in this topic

RavensInsider Former Jaguars starting LB Darryl Smith is on the Ravens' radar for potential addition, per sources. No deal yet, but mutual interest there

Would be a nice addition. 31 years old, but still plenty left in the tank for a year or two.

I would be intrigued by this, Daryl Smith has been a good player lost in Jax. My only concern would be him taking reps from our younger guys like Bynes, Brown, etc.

meh...he's slightly better than McClain, so I'll take it, especially since we should be able to get him for peanuts.

I'd rather we spend this money on offense

Slightly better? He has talent and is a good player.... Much better

Would not mind this at all.

From Profootballfocus:

Summary: This long-time Jacksonville Jaguar hasn’t gotten as much attention as he deserves since joining the league in 2004. He spent nearly all of the 2012 season injured and played only in the last two games. Prior to that he was the standard for 4-3 outside linebackers. In 2011 he finished third in Run Stop Percentage at 10.6%, in Pass Rushing Productivity (for those with at least 50 pass rushes) at 13.0, and in Yards per Coverage Snap at 0.67. Many of the free agent linebackers available are good at one or two of those things, but he is the rare talent who can do it all. He will be 31 in a month, so his best football might be behind him, but even if he can’t reach the same heights he once did, he can still be a great upgrade for most teams.

i would absolutely love this pickup, but only for depth and a rotation/roleplayer guy. i wanna see how mcclain can perform coming back from the injury, and if josh bynes spends another season rotting on the bench then ill be pretty upset, and if arthur brown doesnt get a fair shot ill be upset too, but we have 2 MLB's as of now due to injury, we'll have 4 if everyone recovers fine, and theres only one of them that we know is starting material, so signing this guy would make for great depth in case of injury, or a disappointing performance from unproven players

Another 4-3 guy. Can't help but wonder.

I'd love the signing. I'd like for Carr and Bynes to get more snaps, but if he makes the team better I'm all for it. Especially considering McClain's injury and Brown's possibly rough development.

and i forgot to add, the one guy who is a proven starter, was kinda above average, he was a tough dude, but lacked in coverage, and as a run stuffing specialist, i am worried about his spinal concussion, the way he plays will make it tough to perform this year, but regardless, he was ONLY kinda above average, darryl smith is awesome and underrated, sort of like corey redding rotting away in seattle, and he can come in and split time with jameel and keep him fresh and possibly outperform him and just take his job

Hes much better then McClain, there's zero question... and that was McClain as a healthy player. I'd like to have him as a part of the Ravens

Maybe a couple years ago. Now he's 31 coming off an injury plagued year. Then again, so is McClain, but at least McClain is entering his prime years

we need some more vet experience at LB - he'll do very nicely (for a couple of years) thank you

I don't mind this at all. I like Smith a lot. He's had some injuries and he is older, but he can provide some leadership and veteran presence as well as hunger. Those are important factors. I really wouldn't mind this signing if it happens. I'd like him over McClain, or even with McClain so we can bring Arthur along slowly like we tend to do with guys.

Yeah he's def better than McClain, but I'd rather throw Arthur right into the fire. Come to think of it, Daryl Smith is a pretty good comparison for Arthur Brown. Do everything well, but nothing great...and that isn't a bad thing

BTW, in regard to my "slightly better than McClain" comment, I mean he is clearly an upgrade over McClain, but he isn't the second coming either. They are both equally good against the run, but Smith is better in coverage and can contribute a little in the pass rush, whereas McClain provides nothing as a pass rusher. I'm no McClain fanboy...

Hmmmm. I like the signing, a lot actually but I don't like cutting McAdoo.
Maybe it's just me still wanting him to pan out and contribute... Maybe he was in Harbs "doghouse"? Or most likely he wasn't as good as I thought he was.

Oh well, Welcome to Bmore Smith!

Great signing, although i've heard he had a pretty severe injury last year that kept him from recovering to full health.

He (was) one of the few guys in Jags that has stayed productive over the years, so he has a history of productivity.   This move was much needed.  We needed a vet.

But I hope he comes here with a rookie mentality and really bring it all he got.   Whether he is a 10 year vet or not, I have little sympathy for him if he doesn't make the starting roster spot.   It's a dire need for ILB position, and someone needs to step up big time for us.

This would be an excellent signing because it's a talented veteran who has something to prove. He's not gonna come in and be the main guy, the leader of the defense or anything, but more like insurance. If Bynes, Brown, Carr and even McClain isn't progress along to the rate at which we hoped, then he'll have a larger role then expected. However if those guys show they can handle the defense, then he'll be like a Chris Carr signing.

This signing if it happened would be a win win for both sides. Smith would get a chance to play with a winner and the Ravens get a vet hungry for a ring.

Well McClain and Arthur Brown are still shelved due to injuries, so the team is trying to find talent for training camp.

Also, Rolando McClain retired, so the ILB position got thin again.

Smith played like a stud for years in Jacksonville, but injuries deterred him last year.

Looks like an interesting signing.

McAdoo is still underweight. He just wasn't going to make the roster. Good signing.

I had my doubts about McAdoo making the roster as well, but it's surprising that they'd cut a guy with some real potential in favor of a guy like Brynden Trawick or Marcus Rivers, who realistically have very little chance at making the roster.
