Courtney Upshaw reportedly out of shape

No it will help him slim down long-term, but the results are minimal.  He will lose a lot of water weight, but he'll also lose some fat as well.  In heat, the heart rate picks up quicker and expends more energy.  When the heart rate picks up, you hit your peak faster and in turn, burn more calories.  It's not useless, but it's also not recommended.  It will cause you to lose more than water weight, but the potential negatives (dehydration, etc.) outweigh the pretty much guaranteed positives (weight loss).  I wouldn't recommend it without supervision.  I'm sure on the field, the trainers are able to keep an eye on guys who choose to go this route.

when you say minimal fat loss, would he really notice much of a difference if he trains in this the whole way thru camp compared to not training with it? It just screams like he's trying to lose the 15 lbs as quick as possible, rather than actually "slimming" with EXTRA hard work.

But as you say, the media don't have access to his diet and gym regime

Yes, basically.  This only adds to what we assume he is already doing (diet and exercise).  If he is not doing anything but working out in sweats (which I seriously doubt), then it is borderline useless.  It's not the defining factor in his long-term weight loss, but it will help out a little bit.

well that's what I've been getting at, this training in sweats in and off itself its pretty useless to actually slim down, but would help him lose the lbs in water. I'd be worried if he notices the scale going down he might not actually kick the old habits it slim properly

It is extra work.  Check out what I said in my last post and that should answer this.  It's merely an addition to what we assume he's already doing.

by extra work I meant doing more strength training and extra cardio in his own time.. He might take the easy way out if he notices the lbs dropping by this. He just needs to not get comfortable if he does see weight dropping

No it's not useless.  Let's just say that after doing this workout in sweats, Upshaw goes from 280 to 270.  8 pounds may be water weight, but 2 pounds may be fat.  It's hard to tell short-term what was actually lost, but results will be seen long-term.  I do agree with the last part of your statement though.  That's another negative to this type of training.

that last part is what I've been trying to say lol. It's late.

I'd rather hear him going straight to the gym when he wakes for a pre morning strength session than him training in sweats, which appears, to me, be an attempt to lose the 15 lbs he needs to lose before camp, before he's probably getting fined, again. I hope he's not thinking quick fix to hit the weight, then just go back to normal and it will pile back on

Yeah, I agree, but you do have to remember that Upshaw has access to trainers, nutritionists, etc. that are able to follow his progress and can probably tell him that a large portion of what he's lost is in water weight.  The average person likely doesn't have these commodities and may fall victim to the negative you mentioned.  It really varies person to person, and what holds true for one person likely won't hold true for someone else.

Again, this really only lends to potential negatives.  Those negatives may or may not show up.  As long as he's working out and losing water weight (as opposed to sitting in a sauna, which really does absolutely nothing), results will show.

He's also had access to the folks all offseason two years in a row. People have a legit reason to be concerned with him now. If ray rice was doing it I wouldn't blink an eye, but with upshaws perceived work ethic to be less than adequate, it screams easy fix to me, and I'd be worried about him sliding back into old habits when he's lost the required weight on day one of TC.

Granted he hasn't posted pics of awful food on twitter recently.

Well to keep it simple, as long as he's combining his sweats workout with diet, cardio, and strength training, he will see results.  Whether or not he falls victim to these negatives is a different story.  I don't think he's taking the easy way out at all, since we don't really know what he's doing beyond the sweats workout.  If it turns out he's only working out in sweats, then yes, he's losing weight improperly.  But neither you nor I are in a position to know whether that's the case or not.

Never thought I'd actually have to convey this info to anyone but myself out of the office lol

Haha just wanted to point out that it's not completely useless.  Usually I never have to convey this info, but I listen to the nurses I manage tell patients this type of stuff everyday, so I feel like I'm just as qualified as them lol.

So Upshaw is trying to lose weight by wearing a heavy sweatshirt at mini camp smh...I'm legitimately concerned. He needs to get in touch with training staff and get a proper diet and work out regimen.

Are you serious? Can't tell if serious. I don't have the meme.

He's taking the easy way out to hit the target weight

For what it's worth, Trevor Pryce did the same thing. I think even Ray Lewis practiced with a sweatshirt on last year in his attempt to slim down.

It's not uncommon or bad. A lot of athletes do it. I'm sure it's not the only thing he does to lose weight.

If training in sweats doesn't do anything - or has negative effects - then why do guys like Ray Lewis and Ed Reed do it? I'm honestly asking.

Exactomundo!!!

But I guess Pryce and Ray did it because they wanted to be in even better shape, Upshaw has to because he's overweight

this has been discussed to death, I duno if you even read on from the first posts once this came out, but it won't help much if at all if he isn't putting in the relevant work in the gym and on his dinner plate to boot.

I know one shouldnt assume, but pretty sure both (gym and better diet) are happening. People are too tight wound around here now a days.

one would assume they happened in the offseason as well. And how is discussing his methods of losing weight being tightly wound?

Really?
They still did it for different reason, Ray wanted to do it to be in topshape, Upshaw has to do it because he's vastly overweight

They both had the goal of improving their overall fitness. That's literally not different at all.

This isn't even worth discussing.

Yes, thank you for that brilliant observation, Mr. Holmes.

Lol I'm not an idiot. I did keep reading, just felt like putting in my two cents. You don't have to dumb it down that much dude.
