Courtney Upshaw reportedly out of shape

234 posts in this topic

per http://russellstreetreport.com/ota-notes-flacco-spotted-and-the-wr-games-begin/

Speaking of motivation, some who showed up appeared noticeably leaner and/or in better shape including: Bryant McKinnie; Jimmy Smith; Damien Berry; Nigel Carr and Bobby Rainey. One person who appeared to turn into a marsupial during the offseason and sported a hefty pouch around the mid-section was Courtney Upshaw.

Upshaw’s conditioning is rather disappointing. Last summer you may recall the former national champion from Alabama spent a lot of energy getting down to a playing weight in the neighborhood of 270. In 2012 he reported around the 290 mark. For the moment he seems to be at or beyond a rather sloppy 290.

Something to keep an eye on.

That must be some good superbowl food they serve in Bama seeing that Cody isn't on the list of players in better shape.

My first thought was he's been hanging around Cody. Lol.

Little surprised by Berry. He was already in great shape from last year I thought. I remember reports saying he was so big he looked like a full back.

I'm glad to hear McKinnie is taking this seriously.

Been saying for a while now as well as others that Jimmy Smith will breakout this year. It's going to happen. I feel it.

I'm very excited to see Carr. I think he's a sleeper.

Any other news? Specifically Nigel Carr? If McClain doesn't man the ILB, i hope it's Brown and Carr.

I remember reading on Rotoworld that Jameel will get his old spot back when he returns. That's supposedly pet Pees.

Mayba McAdoo could hang out a little with the Bama Crew.

Should help him to get some pounds on his body.  lol

camp is still very far down the road. they will get in shape.

They deserve to enjoy the offseason with winning the SB!!!

No offense but that kind of thinking is what leads to Super Bowl hangovers.

I know what you´re thinking.

But knowing how Harbs is handling his team I am not afraid of a SB hangover at all....

Still. If those "facts" are true about Upshaw: 290 lbs is a lot for an OLB...

On the other hand he doesn´t seem to be ripped during the season anyhow...

He got pretty lean.  He's young, sometimes young players don't know how to be pros.  Also some guys struggle with their weight, it's natural.  He has to figure himself out.

Might as well move him to defensive end, he's never going to be a double digit sack guy and John Simon can be our new JJ.

Not worried about it. He will get down to playing weight...if the story is actually factual.

This sounds a little premature to me. We don't need a double-digit sack guy, we have Suggs and Doom. And Ngata will probably get between 4 and 6. Hopefully somebody will help give him the nescessary motivation he needs to play football for this team. He seems to be a good kid who has the talent.

I guess the good news is Upshaw is no longer a starter.  A lack of work ethic with Suggs and Doom on the team will keep the kid on the bench.

I love how everyone turns on a player from something a beat writer wrote.

Shows how thin your loyalty is.

No one had a problem with his work ethic when he was playing last year. Some players weight fluctuates. He isn't obese, he put on a few pounds (if this story is even valid, this is from a fansite, not from the baltimore ravens, nfl or baltimore sun.)

Tony lomardi has as much access as aaron wilson of the sun or or any of the writers for our on site. He just has free reign to print stuff like that

If he doesn't produce we have plenty of guys to compete with him. Don't get too comfortable Courtney.

SMH if this is true

Has anyone else reported something on it?

It's been mentioned on the radio. I remember hearing Vinny and Rob talk about it on 105.7 the Fan.

I don't know how reputable the Russel Street Report is, but if the writer is accurate, this is very concerning, especially considering the reports that said Upshaw wanted to get leaner and quicker.

I guess this takes him out of the ILB situation.

Got it. It's always one or two guys with this storyline. Sizzle, Haloti, McKinnie, Cody (oh god)

Articles questioning or praising a players physique mean squat without pictures.
Going back to last year and concerns over players weights I don't see a concerted effort by the franchise to hide players with weight problems so I also look for a secondary source to the article since pictures aren't made available

im just saying, it's not like someone at baltimorebeatdown with zero access to the team and is writing on what he hears from someone else.

Could even be a case he looks overweight when he actually isn't. Without seeing him on the scales you'd never know.

Ozzie just needs to stop drafting Bama players, lol.

not to paint them all with a brush, but I'm of this way inclined.

Agreed. I'm really not a fan of Alabama players. There have been a few who I've liked but for the most part I feel they've been frequently overrated.

Yeah, this. Last season, even after he got in shape, he could have passed for 280-290. He's a big, thick man. I'm reserving judgment until I actually see him on the field.

All in all, still think we could have drafted him where we drafted KO and his skill set and size he'd be better suited at 34 end

well this isn't the worst thing to happen considering we picked up Doom, but I was really hoping he could use this season to learn and develop his pass rushing techniques, its going to be hard to do that at 290.
