Two very close teams.

As a Steelers fan, when would you say the rivalry really started? Was it a carry-over from when the franchise was in Cleveland and/or did it gain its own identity at certain point?

I became a Ravens fan in 2004 and my dislike for the Steelers was almost instantaneous :P

2002 is the year the Ravens moved to the AFC North, so I'd assume around then is when it really got serious.  The Titans were a pretty big rival before the Steelers.

Yeah and coming off that playoff loss, too - I just watched the 2001 Ravens Hard Knocks.

I was around 12 when the ravens came into the league and I was a fan then because my dad was but I didn't really follow it closely.... I started following real close in 2003 and by that time the ravens were the ones Id consider our biggest rival

Always look forward to our games.  But Ill be honest, it would of been much sweeter going through the steelers in the playoffs last year to get that ring.

To be fair though, We didn't really have a QB until 2008.

The thing I love about these two teams is they are virtually a mirror image of each other.

The same unpretty, bare bones hard core, down and dirty hard hitting smash mouth football.

Both teams are very very very very good.  Any one who says "The steelers suck" is an idiot and has no business talking about football.  Ravens have never laid down, steelers have never laid down.  There are two games each and every season you can always expect the very best from both teams.

23 total points separate the two teams over all.  23 That is freaking crazy !!!!!!!!!!!

That boils down to less than one point per game !!!!!

Yeah agreed. But in the end who cares? Lol

In 10 years when you look back at it you'll say "The Ravens won it all and Joe Flacco outplayed Luck,Manning and Brady to do it."

Beating those 3 makes it even more special to me.

The Ravens and Steelers have been in the same division since the Ravens arrived in 1996.  The Steelers went through a bit of a down period from 1998-2002, and that's around the time the Ravens/Titans rivalry was going strong.  Once the Titans (and Jags) were moved to the South, the Ravens/Steeler rivalry really started to blossom.

Yeah but I see it as even sweeter that the Steelers didn't make the playoffs and they are sitting at home watching us win it all.

I think the ravens became a legitimate contender and rival for the steelers the day brian billick was hired as the head coach in baltimore. I remember that day like it was yesterday. It brought some real legitimacy to the team. At the time there was a lot of competition for his services.

well obviously i wouldnt take away the broncos  or pats game.  Broncos game being the most exciting game ever and i loved that we just beat the pats down.  But i would of rather had the steelers in the first round of the playoffs.

Well beating the colts at home was also awesome.

I think the interesting thing about this is how close the head to head stats are between these two teams.  Yet head to head for Steelers vs Nfl is lopsided for the Steelers.  That alone makes this a rivalry.

Even more interesting was how up until a point the Ravens had outscored the Steelers yet still lost more games since 2000.  Yet now it's dead even 13-13 wins/losses to date (since 00).  I suppose that makes next season and next game the tie-breaker, or maybe not?

I agree, but Luck had a ton of buzz going on too and it was nice to be a buzz kill.

It would've meant more facing manning but still beating them at home meant alot.

Notice how the tide is turning? This is our decade. The Decade of Flacco.

The statistic that really jumped out at me was that the Steelers defense has been ranked #1 a whole 6 times since 2000. But, the Ravens have been ranked #1 in defense more than once. I know in 2006 we were ranked #1 in both points allowed and yards allowed. This was clearly the case in 2000. So, that's at least 2 times.

Funny thing is, between 2008 and 2011 the Ravens defense has been ranked top 3 in points allowed. In 2012 it was ranked #12.

Meanwhile, Pittsburgh has been ranked #1 in points allowed only 4 times. #1 in yards allowed 6 times. And #1 in both 3 times. I think the reason why our rivalries are so good is this...

...because we're consistently some of the best defenses in the NFL. So, considering we were only ranked 12th in points allowed...it's safe to say I'm glad we cleared house defensively and spent out first 3 picks on Matt Elam, Arthur Brown and Brandon Williams, respectively. Hopefully Jimmy Smith really blossoms and Elvis Dumervil works well opposite of Suggs. If these things happen and Ngata is at 100%, we will see a very special defense in 2013 and 2014.

that stat is total yards allowed...in 2000 the ravens were second in that to the titans. I was going to do the other defensive rankings but I never finished...and we have 6 number one rankings since 2000 all time its much more

6 number one rankings in YARDS allowed...

Defenses should be measured by how few of points they allow, since, well, that is the object of the game. But yards does help give a bigger picture. I suppose if a team is like 24th in points allowed, but #1 in yards allowed that could indicate that the defense routinely had a short field to work with, or that the offense gave up a lot of turnovers/punts were returned really easily. I still find punting squads to be part of the defense though.
