Changes In Our Offensive Playcalling I'd Like To See

5 posts in this topic

At the risk of incurring a lot of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it responses", there's a few things that I would like to see changed/implemented into our offense.
I would like to preface this post by saying that against the weaker defenses, we have played them to perfection thus far (both in strategy and execution), so no changes needed there.
But against the tougher defenses, such as Tennessee, Indy and NYG; we have sputtered a bit on offense. I believe the main reason for that is our strategy, and noticed a few things each game had in common and how I would do things differently.
Against each of the defenses above, we were very conservative in our passing, and I don't feel we attacked their weaknesses aggressively enough.
Also, every week we seem to find ourselves in way too many third and long situations ( I consider long to be 6 or more yards to go).

The biggest changes that I would like to see are:

1) Ray Rice play more of a scatback role. He has good hands and is dangerous in open space. Get him running more swing passes, screens, etc.

2) More two-TE formations. That would allow us to let Heap get more involved in the passing game (let's face it, he presents a lot of huge mismatches against opposing defenses), while still having a TE on the line to help with protection.

Other than that, there's not much else I would change.
After all, if it ain't broke, don't fix it!

I agree with you, and would love to see more screen passes to Rice and even Clayton. They both have the speed and ability to make people miss and gain yardage.

I like how we are letting Flacco open the field more, and hope that they take advantage of his arm and accuracy next week against the Redskins.

I agree that we have been in to too many 3rd and long situations. Yesterday we had 3rd and 9 or 7 to go at least 3 times on the first two drives of the game. What i do like is the fact that we seem to be able to convert them this year. I think we've converted more 3rd and longs this year than in the last 2 or 3 years combined.

We have been outstanding on third down this year, regardless of whether it's third-and-1 or third-and-long.
But, it doesn't matter who you are, that will come back to bite you sooner or later. We need to figure out how to fix that without becoming too predictable (this is where Cam earns his check...glad I'm not thee one who has to do it, lol..)

I'd LOVE to see some screen routes to Rice! He has great hands and and amazing speed once he see's open feild. He's an unexpected threat.
